I do love my country, and one of the main reasons for that is because people can freely do this kind of thing. It degrades our flag to have it fly over the building housing those people who are doing what the ICE has been doing lately. The people who took down that flag re-raised it upside down, to show that it's in distress. They SAVED it from further disgrace.

California is dominated by a different Anglo subculture. There's a massive difference between white San Fransiscans and white Phoenicians, culturally. It just so happens that west coasters, from LA to Vancouver, are more inclusive and vote alongside incoming immigrant groups.

    Yes thats revisionism.

California virtue signaled about not wanting electricity from evil arizona.

Arizona said fine, don't buy it-and california not only caved, but then pushed for solar in arizona as well.

We are not legally bound to what was written by France on the Statue of Liberty.

    'Been there/ done that'

Resentment of immigrants being provided public services [Prop 187] was rejected by the federal court several decades ago and marks the decline of the Republican party in California. Ultimately the GOP will suffer more election defeats and states like Arizona and Texas will turn deep blue like the Left Coast.

It was a sentiment that showed great admiration for what was our noblest and best aspiration, and now it is being overthrown by an ignorant painted bigot and all the Republicans think that's just great.

They will be blue, not deep blue. They will look more like Georgia, but inverted, blue but with a pretty equivalent red population that just rarely gets elected in statewide elections. Nevada, Colorado, and Utah will be similar, though Nevada and Colorado will be bluer.

    You can't be serious.

    1) Cool. Let's all move to America. Half of China qualifies. And about three quarters of India. Of course, Africa has plenty of new citizens for you, too. After all ... 'desire' is your only criteria for citizenship.

    2) No, they are not 'yours'. They are foreign nationals - either visiting, working, or present illegally. Makes no difference, they are STILL not yours. Unless you regard yourself as a citizen of every nation you set foot in, and believe you should be able to claim free stuff in each of those nations. Do you?

    3) Sure, give those second chances to people who actually demonstrate their willingness to assimilate and become American. Best way to do determine that is their willingness to learn the language (before arriving) and their willingness to acquire whatever merits America deems beneficial to the nation. Could be trade skills, could be nursing skills, could be mining, agriculture, sciences, education, whatever. People show their DESIRE to become American, by becoming American - IOW, by making themselves attractive to the nation. Beyond that, you should always make a small space for bona-fide refugees (the starving, the war afflicted, etc).

Edited to add: The reason you have succeeded enough to offer safe harbour to the genuine refugee, is because you didn't leave your doors wide open for the past 100 years. If you expect to continue helping the truly downtrodden, you're going to have to preserve that very wealth and stability. If you expect to remain a First World nation, peaceful and wise and responsible guardians of humanity, you MUST become like Japan. Once you acquiesce to the exploiters, you will very quickly become a nation too unstable and too poor to help anyone.

Utah is a unique state where resistance to Trump is voiced by Republicans. Mormons are not comfortable with anti-immigrant actions. But I think it will remain Republican for a while longer than Nevada was.

Yeah, weird huh. It's almost as though they really DO prefer a sovereign First World capitalist democracy, and all that goes into maintaining such a thing.

Arizona was rebuked by the courts so the boycotts ended unless you have some other lamebrain notions to defend.

"The day before the law was to take effect, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that blocked the law's most controversial provisions.[19] In June 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the case Arizona v. United States, upholding the provision requiring immigration status checks during law enforcement stops but striking down three other provisions as violations of the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution.[20]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_SB_1070#Boycotts

Why do you think Republicans are anti-immigration? America imports a lot of people, and always has.

America is the greatest country in the world but it must be forced to change. That's leftist logic, and apparently the logic of many new arrivals.

Look I know you get your news from the LA times, The New Yorker, and Elle.

But its not the whole picture. Your perspective is limited.

America is not governed by poems. They can be inspirational, aspirational or safely ignored, but that's a personal choice - not a public policy..

Yes, why aren't they fleeing such an awful White Supremacist Trumpland of Nazism? It doesn't make any sense at all. Again, it's almost as though they actually love white male run capitalist democracies and all that goes into maintaining them.
