I voted NO because the AR15 is not a military weapon or a weapon of war, and it's not a weapon I would want to be issued if I was going into combat.

Ya, I know. Its Iheir word for 'should be restricted.' Won't be long until conservative speech is a 'weapon of war'.

You should've asked 'should they be restricted as weapons of war'. I wouldve said no.

Your response was far more coherent than anything they can muster - well done.

Thanks for displaying your lack of knowledge. ARs are among the rifles of choice for hunting wild boar. Also, the AR type rifle is one of the most commonly sold rifles. If what you say is true, the streets would be a bloodbath with AR shootings. They aren't. Rifles (of which ARs are only subset) are responsible for less than 3% of murders. For reference, about four times as many people were killed by knives than by all rifles.

If I had to do it over again and was allowed to choose what rifle I would carry in Vietnam, it would have been the M-14.

Being sent to Afghanistan or anywhere in the Middle East, it's a no brainer, the M-14.

Urban warfare, (Hue, Fallujah) the .45 Thompson submachine gun.

There's a reason the Army dusted off a bunch of M14s and sent them to Iraq/Afghanistan.

Leading up to the first Gulf war (Desert Storm) the U.S. Marine Corps was seriously considering reissuing the M-14 to all Marines being sent to the Gulf.

The idea was scrubbed because that it would take months to train the Marines with the M-14 and that many would become gun shy not ever experiencing the recoil of a real high power rifle.

That's sad - BDA soaks up the recoil.

Then why don’t they equip soldiers with them now if they are one of the best ever produced. Does any country in the world equip their soldiers with the m1 Garrand now ?

You wouldn't choose an AR15?

Heck, in some situations an M870 shotgun would be preferable to an AR15. I keep a civilian version around the house for any unwanted intruders, especially the pit vipers that are far too common out here in Copperhead Central.

The fully automatic AR15 is a military weapon and is not legally available for the public to purchase. The semi automatic AR15 is no different than any semi automatic deer rifle available.

Maybe. If one was registered with the BATF prior to 5/1986, it is legal for the public to purchase.

Taiwan's issue rifle is the T-91, which is a 5.56 mm derivative of the M-16
Greece's issue rifle is the HK G-3 (7.62 nato) (they use the Garand for ceremonial purposes)
Japan's issue rifle is the Howa Type 89 (which is a derivative of the 5.56 AR-180).
Norway's issue rifle is the HK 416 (5.56 mm)

Besides Haiti, they are being used for ceremonial purposes per YOUR link. That's not real usage as a battle rifle, IMHO. Haiti uses all sorts of weapons. They really don't have an official weapon.

You're trying to make a little argument that does not exist. We used ceremonial black powder weapons in the service too for a while. Your contenting is that the m1 IS. one of the best military weapons in the world. IT Is NOT and no one uses it that way...NO ONE.
Drill teams, give me a break.

The poster asked about equipping soldiers with the Garand. He didn't specify what use.
