Iran incorporates into its laws the suppposed inferiority of women that is a given in Islam.
The Qu'ran 4:34 says in part "Men have authority over women because Allah has made the
one superior to the other, and because they spend their property for the support of women.
On October 26, 2006, Iranian Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi issued a fatwa - a Muslim
religious edict - saying that if wives were disobedient, it is acceptable to hit them. The
Ayatollah said that women "are masochistic and sometimes they have a crisis and need
light physical punishment to get them back to normal."

According to Wikipedia, "The Iranian legislation does nor accord the same rights to women
as to men in all areas of the law." According to Iranian law, "the value of woman's life is half
that due the man ("for instance, if a car hit both on the street, the cash compensation due to the woman's family was half that due the man's") - Wikipedia. It further says that "The
testimony of a male witness is equivalent to that of two female witnesses." A daughter is
entitled to only half the inheritance that a son gets.

Human Rights Watch's World Report 2017:Iran says, "Iranian women face discrimination in personal status matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and child custody. A woman
needs her male guardian's approval for marriage regardless of her age and cannot pass on her nationality to her foreign-born spouse or their children. Married women may not obtain a
passport or travel outside the country without the written permission of their husbands."

It goes on to say, "The UN Children's Rights Committee reported in March that the age of marriage for girls is 13, that sexual intercourse with girls as young as nine lunar years was
not criminalized, and that judges had discretion to release some perpetrators of so-called
honor killings without any punishment. Child marriage - though not the norm - continues,
as the law allows girls to marry at 13 and boys at age 15, as well as at younger ages if authorized by a judge."

The low status of women permeates every aspect of their lives. Zahra Navidpour wanted a job in the Accounting Court of Tehran. Iranian member of Parliament Salman Khodadadi
offerred to help her, but instead - according to Navidpour - he raped her. She sought to
prosecute him but found the judge unsympathetic. She reported several times that
Khodadadi was threatening her, and wrote a letter to the trial judge saying that her life was
    in danger.

On January 6, 2019, Navidpour was found dead in her mother's home. Iranian authorities
at once said she had committed suicide. Her body was taken to the corner's office for an
autopsy. However, Security forces smuggled the 28 year-old's body out of the office
before an autopsy could be performed and secretly buried her. Khodadai had previously been arrested for raping other women but still holds his job.

Women are required to wear the hajib (headscarf) and can be jailed, fined or flogged
for not doing so. On March 11, 2019, Iranian human rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh
was sentenced to 148 lashes and 38 years in prison for taking off her headscarf, opposing
the death penalty, and "insulting the Supreme Leader."

Not surprizingly, this discrimination wears on women. According to an IranFocus article
entitled "Violence, poverty and abuse led girl, 16, to gallows," August 31, 2004, 66% of
Iranian women "are victims of some form of domestic abuse, and over 70 percent of women suffer from varying degrees of depression." This may seem hard to believe, but, on May
9, 2019, a spokesman (Iraj Hariji) for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education said
that 27.6% of Iranian women suffer from mental illness (along with 19.4% of men).

What is the cause of this depression and mental illness among Iranian Women? It may be
because, as UN Human Rights spokesman Maurice Copithorne said in 2004, Iran is
    "a prison for women."

As usual, the latest Islamophobic thread re-hashes stuff that has been discussed hundreds of times in this forum and which have been found to be no different from the Christian Bible's teachings:

    https://www.nobeliefs.com/DarkBible/darkbible7.htm

By the way, does all this explain depression in Western, Christian women??

What is the percentage of Christian women who are depressed? Not a shred of sympathy for poor Zahra Navidpour or Nasrin Sotoudeh.

There are states in the US, and no doubt there will be more states following suit,.... that the victim of a rapist must become the mother of his child. To prosecute a rapist means nothing if a woman must be humiliated like that. Absolutely nothing.

righties express even less sympathy for those women killed in Bush_terrorist's bombings in the Middle East

The threats to bomb Iran are likely not met with the ready approval you people imagine - like Iraq the bombers and other US troops will not be met with flowers and candy as Bush thought in Iraq

If you are really concerned with women's rights in Iran, then concern yourself with their right to live as they please without threats, hate, and bombs from the West.

I am opposed to war with Iran. And I have said so previously in the threads "Sen. Tom Cotton: War With Iran would
be just 'two Strikes'" and the thread "Neocons Move on Iran with 'Smothering Force and Economic Warfare." Iran is evil, not weak.

    laughable!

    Women support Iranian government:

Iranian women and girls gather ahead of Islamic Revolution 40th anniversary at Tehran's Imam Hussein square on January 31, 2019. to express their support for Iran's government, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The movement which defeated the fascist shah who had been supported by American imperialists would never have succeeded without the women of that country.

One propaganda poster is hardly proof that women are happy in Iran. Why would they be? Legally they are considered half a man. Their testimony is worth only half a man's in court, they may
inherit only half what a man gets, etc. etc. They have to live with draconian dress codes that are strictly enforced, and can be thrown into prison for the slightest complaint against the government.
Would you be happy living under such conditions? You have not supported your claim that Christian women are unhappy (which is not really relevant anyway).

And the US deserves this orange narcist who gloats around tweeting. Costing the US taxpayer over 100 million bucks for playing golf on his own resorts. Able to give the filthy rich tax breaks by lending money from the bank, and to top it all... probably supports the idea that women must be humiliated by giving birth to the child of their rapist. No doubt he doesn't support single parent families, like the rest of the GOP. What an ill joke.

It is the right of self determination. The USA does not have the right to invade a foreign country and to dictate to those people what government they are to have. The MAJORITY of those people (and this includes women and men) upheld the Ayatollah. That is their right. And this proves women are empowered by their government.

    CASE CLOSED.

Indeed we do. The Orange Man is fantastic.
And if the left wasn't a pack of death-threat-spouting lunatics, presidential security costs wouldn't be so exorbitant.
The banks that got filthy rich because the last guy shoveled hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into them.
"Probably" is the weasel word leftists use when reality doesn't conform to their fantasies.
The DNC's support for single-parent families has been an utter disaster for African Americans. An absolute disaster.

Pff... has nothing to do with that narcist watching hours and hours of tv everyday, to than insult around on twitter as a baby. And all that time he spend on the golfcourse. What a total disgrace. To think he badmouthed Obama for playing golf half the time Trump does now. And the costs are so high, because he rents his rooms from his own company with tax money, including the plane trip. That all needs lavish protection. While Obama golfed on a military golf course close by, that already has protection. Obviously.

That's because the GOP leader before him, broke the world economy. And so Obama had to save the too big to fail companies from having a complete capitalistic meltdown. Trump just borrows lavish amounts of money to give tax breaks so the filthy rich can earn even more.

So far it's the reality. These are GOP policies.
Hate single parent families,.. support rapist make women into single parent families. That's the GOP for ya. Christian values ftw.

Self -determination is good booth at how and abroad. But the people, especially the women, don't have that. They are held under the thumb of the most oppressive and repressive regime on
earth. Iran executes more people, per capita, than any other country on earth (Wikipedia). They hold the people enthral with their powerful military, 420,000 strong, vast police powers, and
government sponsored paramilitary gangs of thugs (see my thread on them). They fund Hezboolah and Syrian militiamen, and due to recent unrest, they have brought some of them into
Iran to bolster their own forces.

The World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report ranked Iran 140th out of 144
countries surveyed for gender parity (Wikipedia article "Women's Rights in Iran").
