IS COOLING THE DESERTS the best way to prevent ocean level rise?

Discussion in 'Science' started by DennisTate, Aug 7, 2019.

?

Is desalination of ocean water a better way to reduce Global Warming than reducing CO2 emissions?

People should never use the term "CAGW", not if they don't want to be laughed out of the room. Such WUWT conspiracy cult lingo should only be used within the cult. It's the equivalent of a flat-earther flinging around "globalist" as an insult, in that it instantly tells everyone not to take the speaker seriously.

We can see you're not a scientist. You're in some kind technical field, and you hold the mistaken belief that having any sort of technical training makes a person a scientist. I refer to it as "Engineers' Arrogance Syndrome", though it also manifests in fields other than engineering.

Haha, you got that right! I've had to deal with that for years. Apparently while they were learning how to wire light switches, they think we were in yoga classes.

Not long ago I had to defend physics with a couple arrogant engineers. I said, you do realize that ALL engineering is derived from physics, right? No, they didn't. LOL! They both looked at me as if I stole their Twinkies.

The other guy asked why we don't have to prove things in physics. WHAT?!?!?! He is an EE and doesn't have a clue how science works.

There is absolutely ZERO reason that anyone should care whether or not you or anyone else on this board is a scientist.

It's ridiculous to take posts from anyone on this net as being more significant that the results of the scientists from numerous disciplines and from all over the world when they confirm fundamentals.

We should be citing reviewed science from known and respected sources.

Photosynthesis does not create water. In photosynthesis water molecules are split by the sun freeing hydrogen atoms which are used to create two intermediate storage molecules ATP and NADPH.

I don't know where Cantrell got that photosynthesis creates water molecules.

But whether or not his theory is correct or not could be secondary to
the ability to be able to actually market this theory to conservatives who
tend to take Isaiah chapter thirty five seriously...........

Isa 35:1 "The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose......
    Isa 35:6

Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes."

Mr. Al Gore did a great job of marketing his favourite professor's theory to young people
....... but not to older people like me, (sixty).... who are skeptical of why my nation Canada should
burden the private sector with tens of billions of dollars in a Carbon Tax..... considering that we produce
less than two percent of global atmospheric gasses?????????

Turning deserts green on the other hand has an obvious direct correlation to protecting the
real estate along the Bay of Fundy that we can understand!

The following question is so serious during this time of a massive land based Greenland Ice Pack
summer of melting that it could even force political rivals to cooperate to at least some degree:

Here is a question that can FORCE M. P. ANDREW SCHEER AND M. P. MAXIME BERNIER TO begin to cooperate at least some..... The situation along the Bay of Fundy is too serious to ignore in the light of the melting that is happening this summer on the land based Greenland Ice Pack.

"If average ocean levels rose by eight to ten cms (3 or 4 inches) could high tide...
... rise by one meter in the Isthmus of Chignecto in Nova Scotia, Canada?

This question is logical because the geography of Canada's Bay of Fundy produces the world's highest tides. In my part of Nova Scotia in Guysborough County there is very little funnelling of tidal waters......... so high tide is only about one to one point five meters above low tide.

In the eastern area of the Bay of Fundy high tide levels are up by ten to fifteen meters."

The Greenland 2019 melt and forcing M. P. Andrew Scheer and M. P. Bernier to cooperate?

NASA scientists flew over Greenland to track melting ice. They took some sobering photos

    https://www.cbsnews.com/video/greenland-experiences-severe-ice-melting/

Replicating massive desalination facilities like Sorek on the other hand has an obvious effect on the threat of rising ocean levels..... every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and added to the water table of Israel, Jordan, Australia, California, Qatar, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco is very good news for the owners of the land along the Bay of Fundy........

Take a look at post #3, my 2008 campaign at the municipal level to get an idea of how
difficult it is to sell an older not so naive person like me on a Carbon Tax!

I got a question that I have passed on to several Math and Physics teachers that I believe is fairly simple.......
and because I live only about a hundred miles from the Bay of Fundy they both found the topic quite interesting.......
and asked for more details relevant to the question. (I am a janitor at a school and topics like this give us janitors
something intriguing to discuss with some teachers)!

Personally..... I think that the most logical answer is quite simple!

"If average ocean levels rose by eight to ten cms (3 or 4 inches) could high tide...
... rise by one meter in the Isthmus of Chignecto in Nova Scotia, Canada?

I think that you are correct... but.... with CIA economist Mr. Jim Rickards letting the world know back in
2014 that there are seven hundred and ten TRILLION dollars in the worldwide Derivatives markets.......
and even he fears a one hundred TRILLION dollar correction in the Derivatives market that could spread to
other markets puts us into a situation where we need to think outside of the box............

I put the beginning of a theory on how to address even this in front of one of our local Members of Parliament
    on February 19, 2018:

    http://www.politicalforum.com/index...illion-dollar-problem.525406/#post-1068713597

    M. P. Bill Casey... President Trump has a 4.3 trillion dollar problem....

He has not publicly replied to this option yet but I am sure that the melting in Greenland this summer has him thinking!

While I don't think it is the cure all for global warming, it could be helpful to pursue. Most of the ice currently melting in Antarctica is due to the warming sea water that undercuts the ice sheets along the edge of the continent--especially in W Antarctica. The more it causes that ice to melt, the faster the ice behind it melts. It's all speeding up. And it is already affecting people around the world. The best example to watch for these growing effects would be the country of Bangladesh, which is already being highly affected, & will be more so as time progresses. Bangladesh is the canary in the mine, & will demonstrate what we will all have to deal with soon.

And it really could be some good news to assist in diverting the world away from Bear Market considering that there were seven hundred and ten trillion in the Derivatives market back in 2014!

I don't see you posting links that give a real understanding of these ideas you find.

How about a link to a paper written by Cantrell that shows the math and has been reviewed?

I don't want to hear about Isaiah, near death experiences, etc.

Is this guy planning on draining inches off the ocean with pumps?

Is this taking into account the carbon cycle already in action, where vegetative matter returns carbon to the atmosphere by oxidation processes?

The "big numbers" argument doesn't really work - the amount of output of those desalination plants isn't being correlated to requirements of a useful purpose, nor is that number large enough to lower oceans by a meaningful amount even if the pumped water magically disappears.

The terrain above and below sea level, as well as the force of the tidal surge, determines the unique tidal patterns from location to location...

What sort of power are you going to use to desalinate all this sea water?

Any form of power generation...including solar and wind. Potable or drinkable water is a necessity to human survival so when 96% of Earth's water is undrinkable, seems to me this is great potential for lots of water suitable for humans. All we need is a president and government to make efficient desalination a major goal within the next 5-10 years...

The central findings (not what we should do about it, etc) are sciece.

That has to be reviewed by scientists in order for it to have value. No paper is considered significant if it has not passed the regors of review and publicantion by serous journals to process.

Solar is getting more and more efficient but obviously nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar will tend to use natural gas........
    which is fine by me!

No, I did answer the question.

Science includes a serious review process leading to publication.

Material that has met the full measure of scientific method deserves consideration.

It is more difficult to accept material that has not passed that process as it is usually harder to determine whether the work has been duplicated with equivalent results, whether experts in the field have specific issues with the work, etc.

You may find it interesting that electrical energy may be the cause of climate change by the Earth , Earths magnetic field and atmosphere retaining electrical energy .

    Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this article at all close to what you are writing about?

More Cooling, Less Heating and (Maybe) Less Energy Use
The somewhat surprising potential consequences of climate change and the southward shift of U.S. population.

The term "heat" is often misused and misunderstood . Heat is actually a sensory experience of the mind and body experience. An inanimate object does not sense or feel heat as we do , so to use the term heat is actually imprecise. The more correct term and use would be thermal energy .

Additionally , to answer your question , this is close to the type of articles I write .
