    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/23/tru...ods-in-response-to-trade-war-retaliation.html

    • President Donald Trump says the U.S. will hike tariffs on most imports from China as his trade war with Beijing escalates.
    • The U.S. will raise duties on $250 billion in Chinese goods to 30% from 25% and increase tariffs on another $300 billion in products to 15% from 10%.
    • Earlier, China announced new tariffs on $75 billion in U.S. goods, and Trump ordered U.S. companies to find an “alternative” to operating in China.

To me this is the most important story of the week

Maybe the most important story of the trump presidency

The Chinese won't know the difference.. We will. Trump doesn't know anything about economics. He barely got thru Wharton undergrad.. Never went to class.

Mac, as a conservative how do you feel about government telling private companies how to run their business?

Sure he will be remembered for initiating a pointless trade war which destabilized the global economy.

Liberal globalist free traders know even less than trump

China is fighting to keep the jobs they took from America because they know how important it is for a great nation to be productive

The trump haters miss that fact

    Mac,

China has patience. They have a President for Life and a culture that always plays the long game and as you can plainly see any social dissent is violently confronted by the government.

Trump has no such luxuries and considering his overarching motivation is partisan politics and domestic "conditions".

He's politically vulnerable and the grown ups running other nations, both friend and foe, know it.

Course you believe that China is paying the billions in tariffs flowing into Trump's coffers, so perhaps you haven't noticed.

In the days before globalism we didnt have to remind American companies to put America first in their business dealings

They naturally wanted to do what was best for their country

But that was before the liberal cultural revolution

When will you Trumpites "get it?"

China's exports to this country are less than 4% of their GDP, not nearly enough for us to by our lonesome lever up on them with tariffs. Trump abandoned the TPP and is feuding with the EU--the two best partners we might have to pressure China.

In this case china and trump know something that free trader trump haters do not

Namely that manufacturing is a source of strength for nations that have it

And a big disadvantage for nations that dont

I agree with what you say about the bargaining advantage of china

    BUt they have weaknesses too

For America its now or never

If left unchecked china will rule the world

You cannot be conservative and support this magnitude of government intervention in free markets. Mainstream Republican, yes. Conservative, no.

You can be a reactionary, bigoted Trumpian "conservative," however.

If that is what you think, then you don't know what capitalism is. Corporations always do what is best for them, and their shareholders.

This kind of economy where the government mandates patriotism and orders corporations to do things the government way is what Mussolini did in Italy, and what Trump aka Mini-Mussolini is doing in US.

If he jacks up the prices on all of his competitors who also sell Chinese crap here in America, it will give him and his family a huge advantage. Maybe he is a genius....

Exports are a key part of the chinese economy

And exports to the US are an important part of the hinese goal of total economic dominance of the world

China is growing stronger as we grow weaker

If the issues are that unimportant why doesent china concede trumps demands and avoid a costly trade war?
