You could use the strong arm of the government to force companies to bring manufacturing back to US, or you can allow companies to run their business they can so they can maximize their profits.

The problem with government running economy is the fact that they typically don't know how to run business, and many companies would fail because they would no longer be able to generate enough profit (or no profit at all).

The solution is simple. Allow no containerized cargo ships which left from Chinese ports to be unloaded by container gantry cranes at US ports.

    Just do it.

I want to consume less, have less, and see more USA citizens have jobs and paying payroll taxes.

    I welcome the sacrifice.

Whatever gets you through the night, but why does everyone have to sacrifice just to make you and your messiah happy?

Government does not have to govern how to do business.
Government however can make it unprofitable to outsource jobs to China.
That is exactly what government should do.

The Democrats have definitely sold out their constituents lately for corporate money. However they are more likely to appoint judges who will rule in favor of working people. For decades now it seems that Republicans will only appoint judges who will always rule in favor of corporate interests against working people.

There were many why people supported free trade with friendly countries

It was not as simple and evil as you make it sound

    But it was a mistake

So, the government should govern where and how US corporations should do business......Many are profitable only because they utilize cheap labor in China, so your government intervention would drive they out of business.

not making it sound evil, it can be good, but when everyone does it, it's bad for society, there has to be a balance.. Same with foreign outsourcing

The US has dictated where US Corporations do business for a long time, for instance Iran sanctions.

The question is how much pain the American people are willing to tolerate to keep their independence from China and global corporations in general.

Not everyone is willing to sell their birthright for a mess of pottage.

is iran is much smaller country and has much smaller economy then china. many american company sell more stuff in china then here in US. thats why trade war with them means recession, and trump is doing something very stupid by not getting EU/Japan on US side. China right now is lowering tariff for EU/japan products while raising tariff on US products. It had made significant deal with Japan/EU. So trump basically sacrifice US economy by benefiting other countries. does not sound like working for americans.

But doesn't lower consumption result in fewer jobs?

I think Trump will break it, what I hope is that the next President takes that as an opportunity to make a real deal that makes it better than it was... cause I think both sides agree change was needed

what Trump is doing could be a positive in the end if it goes down like that
