Independence? Seriously? You think our independence will be lost unless we engage in idiotic trade wars?

    Now I've heard it all.......

this was Trump's biggest mistake, he tried to bite off more than he could chew, other countries are benefiting from us taking the fight on all on our own though

Quite serious. If we are so reliant on Chinese trade to maintain our standard of living then we lose some independence to the Chinese who will be able to threaten our economy if we do not do what pleases them.

The US has done this to other countries for decades. I would rather it not be done to us.

If I quit buying cheap Chinese products and can't afford more expensive domestic products, it means I'm not spending. If I'm not spending, am I helping or hurting the economy here?

looks like Trump made a trade deal with Japan

"U.S. and Japan strike trade deal ‘in principle’"

    https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/25/us-japan-trade-deal-g7-1474461

"Abe said Japanese farmers have been struggling with “insect pests” on some of their own agricultural products, “and we believe that there is a need for us to implement emergency support measures for the Japanese private sector to have the early purchase of the American corn.”"

not sure all the details, but they agreed to buy more of our corn

this will be welcome news for the midwest farmers

India already is, they are stealing all the tech jobs from America, soon they will control all of our digital infrastructure, self driving cars, ect..... that seems like a national security risk to me, we should be addressing it now, before they become anouther China

Corporations do not have America's best interests at heart

Saving it for retirement? The point is that some stuff is not manufactured here, so we'd have to do without. I'm sure that in the short run, it would be a negative.

    Ha! Haven't seen any since 2016. :)

It is actually very simple - Cheap labor in China = destruction of United States
    That is all
If corporations work to destroy US they are enemy of the state and should be treated accordingly.
Also remember the corporations only exist because of the government.
They cannot compete with free market, they are on the government dole (aka corporate welfare).

The skilled workers will take the low wage jobs, which will pay higher wages until the recession is over and the US reindustrializes.

sometime, i find some ppl are so dumb on how developed countries economy work, US growth is base on high skill, service sectors, and high tech. Take apple for example, for every dollar it get, 40% of it goes to apple profit, 3-5% goto manufacture profit such as foxconn, about 15-20% is from material. China manufacture earn them about 5-10% of overall profits, that is it. its same for almost every product, the company that design the product earn the most profit. China recognize this, hence why its shifting toward consumer base economy, high tech, it WANT to get rid of its low tech manufacture jobs, those goes to vietnam/india etc. while here, ppl want low skill, low pay, low value job back here, thats just mean less competitive for US company. When that happen company not only layoff low skill worker but high skill worker as well, company get merge/purchase by other company etc, lost growth, lost of competitiveness, high skill worker go elsewhere etc. US economy is not based on making socks such as vietnam but design, service, and high tech which is why developed country are so much more richer overall than developing countries.

furthermore low skill assemble job are quickly replaced by AI/robotic, thats true even in China, more so here in US.

The people who have STEM or other useful degrees, who design/IT/engineering will have high payed jobs, but low skill quickly become replaced by robot. competing in low skill manufacture work is like using US weakness against opponents strong pts. ever wonder why Xi called for made in China 2025, its not about making shoes, but put massive investment into high tech. for the pass few years, many silicon valley employee move to china or work for china, they get pay in high 6-7 figure in USD. Trump who ONLY concentrate on outdated industry such as coal, low skill factory jobs, put US future/tech dominance in jeopardy. What he should done is heavily investment in high tech/ service etc, thats where majority of US growth come from.
