How to help the victims of Hurricane Dorian
One of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded, Hurricane Dorian, has devastated the Bahamas, leaving at least seven dead and tens of thousands of homes and businesses destroyed, according to reports. Entire communities have reportedly been “wiped out,” and aid agencies estimate that tens of thousands of people will need support.

“We are in the midst of one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history,” Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis told a news conference. “No effort or resources will be held back.”

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were approximately 60,000 people that lived on the Bahama islands. The death toll will be stunning, it will be in the thousands. Americans are extremely generous and empathetic people and no doubt the efforts made by organizations in the U.S. will exceed that of any other nation.

This is the time, if you have never donated to a relief, to do it. I worked for the American Red Cross as a nurse, so I have a special affinity for the ARC. But no matter to whom or what agency, donations may make the difference between life and death.

Doctors working in hospitals treating wounded are saying that some people are asking to allowed to die because they've lost everyone and everything.

Yes, the official toll had gone up to thirty 12 hours ago but it is difficult not to think it could be much much higher. They seemed to take all of this storm. The BBC is saying the death toll is expected to be staggering

    Heartbreaking.

The Bahamas have been spared for decades from the full force of a cat 5. The building codes are very rigid but even those reinforced concrete structures were torn apart. The stories coming out from those islands is becoming more desperate and will get even moreso as people struggle to find food and water. One man said he and others had to swim through dozens of floating bodies to get to safety. If something like that ever hit the coast of the US, the casualties would be in the millions. One man lifted his five year old son onto the roof only to have him swept away. As it is, it's pretty logical to assume that beneath all those piles of lumber we see strewn around, there are bodies beneath them. One CNN reporter traveled to a small town of about 300, there was not a soul in sight and he said the smell of death was everywhere. God help them.

Our future is in the best of hands.

Jermaine Bell was supposed to spend his seventh birthday at Disney World. He had saved up money to take his family on a trip to Animal Kingdom in Florida.

Instead, he emptied his piggy bank to buy hundreds of hot dogs and serve them for free to Hurricane Dorian evacuees passing through their South Carolina town.

The 6-year-old opened a hot dog stand along the side of a busy road in Allendale, South Carolina, and offered those escaping the coast free franks, water, chips and prayers.

Manning the shaded stand in a makeshift apron down to his feet, Jermaine served more than 100 evacuees on Labor Day, his first day out. He told CNN he’s served “a lot” more since then.

His grandmother Aretha Grant said she’s watched her grandson pray with a family who weren’t sure how their house would hold up during the storm.

“I am very proud,” she told CNN. “We knew Jermaine was very special, but we didn’t know he was special in this way to be such a giver like this.”

The quality of young people this nation always produces continues to astound.

Like all disaster relief efforts this one will take time, and patience. I know that those directly impacted don't have either, but the facts are that the islands will take time before help can arrive, and the waters must subside before that help can start. For those of us fortunate to be able to donate our time, we should, for those who can help financially, we should.

I donated $100 to this outfit. Chef Andres has built a remarkable organization that is skilled at rapidly bringing up kitchens to feed people in disasters. World Central Kitchen hired two helicopters and a ship to get supplies and personnel into the Bahamas BEFORE the hurricane hit. So they were pre-positioned at the edge of the storm and were cooking for people within hours of the damage being done.

Yes, I am aware that a devastating cat 4 hurricane hit Galveston, Texas in 1900. Tragically, the magnitude of the disaster could’ve been lessened if the U.S. Weather Bureau hadn’t implemented such poor communication policies. The Weather Bureau which was the predecessor to the National Weather Service, was only 10 years old, and hurricane science in the U.S. wasn’t very advanced.

    The Bahamas aren't America's problem, it's a British problem.

The Bahamas being a former British colony and after independence from the UK is a member of Commonwealth of Nations.

The Bahamas not ever being under the Spanish Crown rule is not a shithole country like what America got stuck with...Puerto Rico.

The Bahamas will do just fine and recover a lot faster than those other shithole islands in the Caribbean.

It's a humanitarian crisis. It's totally inappropriate to rage about whose "problem" this is.

We are allies and friends and close at hand. So yes while the Royal Navy is there so is the US Coast Guard and US Navy. That's what friends are supposed to do.

Puerto Rico is a government made disaster on top of a natural disaster. Even so a whole lot of people went there to help. Including Chef Andres and World Central Kitchen, an American charity that cooked nearly four million meals at 26 emergency kitchens. Now they ar ein the Bahamas, doing what friends do.

Trump has spent six days now trying to prove he was right that the hurricane was a danger to Alabama, which it never was at any point. He went so far as to personally take a sharpie marker to alter an official forecast map. The pettiness of the man's ego knows no limits.

Me, I donated cash to the World Central Kitchen.

    So what have you done?

Thing is, as sad as this can be, **** happens.
It's every country on earth to manage the risk and prepare for disasters. Cat5 storm are not new and they don't spontaeouslly appear. Instead of building ressorts and casinos they should have built storm proof ressources caches and refuges. They also could have a few ships sail outside of the storm reach with emergency supplied and rescue personnels ready to sail back once the storm as pass.

You have proof he personally did so?
I plan to donate several cases of incontinence supplies tomorrow. Why not ask Bart Simpson what he has done?
The hurricane was indeed a potential threat to Alabama, before it's course became more clear. These things are great at confounding the weather guessers.

What is rare and extreme in this case is the 38 hours the storm remained over the Bahamas. Normally the big hit lasts a couple of hours as the hurricane continues to move along. But this one was a different sort of beast. At times the forward motion was under 1mph. To have a category 5 hurricane grinding away in essentially one place for a day and a half is the not sort of storm anyone is used to dealing with.

And there was a lot of prepositioning being done, lots of preparation work. That was done by both private and government resources

    Liar, plain and simple.

Another person who cannot keep personal attacks at bay even in a situation such as this. A lot has been said on giving money on this thread which is an obvious but for you to want to pretend that money will bring back the dead, which is what I was talking about, is sick.

You were talking about bringing back the dead and the suggestion to donate money is a 'personal attack'? What did I miss? I read the entire thread.

The poster only gives personal attacks to me. It is none of her business whether I personally give money and that was not the subject of my post. It is sad some people are unable even in a tragedy of this to give up on their personal or political ploys.
