Yes. This is the most fundamental point of all. Too bad so many are eager to believe that tobacco doesn't cause cancer or is adictive ..... or that sugar is not a cause of obesity or habit-forming ..... and that nuclear energy and oil are "clean" sources.

I wonder how long it will be before humanity looks back on these days and sees that the lies of today are as primitve as believing the earth is flat.

I do understand the importance of the world economy. Case in point: the world wide boycott of USA products as a result of Bush_Stupid's imperialistic war of colonialist terrorism in Iraq. As a result of that boycott, the impact of the world wide recession increased significantly in the USA.

However, it is not the role of the USA to be the world's policeman. When it attempts to take that role, it screws up royally.

Leave that role to the UN.

Force the USA to withdraw, and then the world powers will finally get off their fat asses and take the corrective action necessary to bring that about.

You truly believe the UN is capable of protecting the shipping lanes that transport oil from the ME? No one is foolish enough to believe that except you. The UN is where leaders go to vent their complaints, that's all. UN members have opposing views on how to deal with situations so they generally override each other so nothing gets accomplished. To think other countries will get off their fat asses and do what is right is foolishness.

Iran and regional powers, absent efforts to isolate Iran and wage economic and other forms of warfare against it, have every reason to protect shipping for the commodities they export and import through those waters. They do not need any extra-regional presence on this pretext.

You mean like the oceans are absorbing the heat produced by the greenhouse effect which in turn is warming the deep water currents that carry nearing freezing water causing the glaciers to melt from underneath? When I hear people talking about how cold the winter is it makes me sad many people don't really understand what is taking place to include people who agree climate change is taking place. But your post is off topic and better suited under another topic.

Yeah, a lot of good your hero Bush did to cause stability and peace in the Middle East.

Right wingers are always calling for government to get out of the way such as through de-regulation. This on the grounds that government has no role in regulating industries or people because it always messes things up. Yet, right wingers in their delusion always insist that government is the exclusive solution when it comes to foreign affairs. Yeah right.

The only ones who want more government control over that region, more conflict, more war are those who stand to profit from war.

    Thanks for the link.

I hope Iran will call off the Houthis as well as HAMAS and Hezbollah.

Bush INVADED Iraq based on lies.. How do you compare that to making sure the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al Mandab stay open to shipping?

Maybe, maybe not. I think it surpasses all other issues at the moment. I do not believe we have time for war or worrying about oil and that the world you are dreaming of will not be. You were looking at a future I do not believe exists - don't get me wrong a future very definitely can exist and a good one at that, just not the one you were talking about.

Iran has seized several oil tankers over the past few months and the Houthis have tried to block the Bab al Mandab attacking ships there.

    1. Dangerous Waters: The Situation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait
      cimsec.org/dangerous-waters-situation-bab-el-mandeb-strait/29508
Nov 21, 2016 · Second, after the attack on HSV-2 SWIFT, US Navy sent three naval ships to the area to show force and to ensure that shipping continues unimpeded in Bab al Mandeb. (2) The US Navy accused Houthi rebels of missiles attacks on three different occasions, however the attacks failed due to deployed countermeasures.

    2. Houthi Antishipping Attacks in the Bab al-Mandab Strait ...
      https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/houthi-antishipping-attacks...
Oct 06, 2016 · The incident -- the latest in a series of attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels against shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the strategic chokepoint connecting the Suez Canal and Red Sea with the Indian Ocean -- triggered the deployment of a trio of U.S. Navy warships to the area, but other measures may be needed to fully curb the threat.

Sometimes .. they do provide some social services, but they haven't been good for the Lebanese people. They provide another excuse for Israel to mistreat the Palestinians.

Its a long way from Iran to Beirut.....

No one so long as the US Navy is protecting the lanes. The Strait of Hormuz is a perfect choke point for anyone wanting to disrupt the world's oil supply to include pirates.

Have you forgotten the PNAC signatories in their 1998 letter to Clinton demanding the overthrow of Saddam and the isolation and destabilization of Syria? The Brits began an intense campaign to sell the invasion of Iraq the same year... call Operation Mass Appeal.

I'm sure Saudi Arabia is going to trust Iran to protect their oil exports. Dream on. The UN members will be discussing this proposal for years to come. No action will take place.

There is also a video available of then 1st lady Hillary Clinton calling for the overthrow of Saddam's regime. An article for the Huffington Post, 1998.

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/hillary-clintons-enthusia_b_12072652

As First Lady, she warmly supported the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, which made it the policy of the Unites States to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. As United States Senator, she invoked the 1998 policy in voting for the 2002 Authorization to Use Military Force Against Iraq. Saddam’s successors proved a cure worse than the disease. Shiite dominated governments allied with Iran, oppressed Sunnis, Kurds, and Turkmen, and created a power vacuum that gave birth to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Our national security has been weakened.

Admittedly Powell sold me during his presentation at the UN. I realize now invading Iraq was a huge mistake.

I am from that part of the world and I know the oil business quite well. I must have written 50 letters to politicians to prevent the invasion before I resigned the Republican party. I have never seen such stupidity... until now.. And Trump .. He was so keen to undo Obama's agreement with Iran.. and now here we are. Trump won't get killed in any war.. He'll send your sons and grandsons.
