You keep advancing this theory despite evidence against it. Tolerance means discussing the use of language and symbols. Tolerance is not letting anything and everything happen. That's called apathy and that's usually used by intolerant people as a means to justify doing whatever they want. If you can't recognize that this symbol is offensive to some and not to others, then you are purposefully ignoring that fact to suit your own agenda. If you cant acknowledge it, and as noted recognize the context when it's used and when it's not used, then you are tolerant. It's a two way street tolerance, not a one way street that let's you do whatever you want whenever you want.

I agree, context matters, that's why making this symbol classified as hate is overreacting.

Nobody really care about that hand sign in France, excepted some people which spend too much time on twitter and are too much influenced by american (liberal) culture.

It's not a major insult in France, it just doesn't inherently mean OK. So my point simply is, context matters. In some context very offensive words can be used for humor's sake, for example.

Mine and a lot of other impoverished mothers tried bowl cuts as paying a barber was out of the question. One look and I pleaded for a buzz cut and she said okay. The buzz is still a great cut for here; it's hotter'n'hell.

Honestly, I have found that those who suddenly profess their intolerance of stuff to be those who are least likely to understand what it means to have freedom. You term this apathy, and truly, I'd suggest that is more an indication of your own failings than not. If you, personally, find it offensive, I'd ask you why. Do you have such little ability to advocate against the slight or offense that you perceive that you'd require government to act on your behalf? That's the very definition of tyranny. And yet, here you are...

And to put a super fine point on it. We aren't asking whether folks can "tolerate" something that frankly is an inherent personal right. Think about your position carefully. Should I, because I'm offended by your speech, be able to criminalize you? Cause frankly, that question turns on whether I tolerate your speech or not. That is the very reason we define basic civil rights so that knee jerking spasmods can't arbitrarily introduce their intolerant tyranny on the rest of us. Thanks for the excellent demonstration though.

Gay used to mean "happy", the V sign used to mean "victory", and the middle finger used to mean "look up".

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to throw my yellow flag on that last one.... admittedly brief research finds nothing of the sort

    SNIP
Ancient Greek philosophers, Latin poets hoping to sell copies of their works, soldiers, athletes and pop stars, schoolchildren, peevish policemen and skittish network executives have all been aware of the gesture's particular power to insult and inflame.

"It's one of the most ancient insult gestures known," says anthropologist Desmond Morris.

And other brief research can find little other than victory for the V sign too...

Buzz cut is 100% fine... I just got my kid something a shade less than a buzz cut last night...

Most male athletes (like my kid) should be thinking that way...

That word triggered me. Please cancel yourself and make it illegal;)

This just reinforces the fact that progressives must have lost their collective minds. Is it the water? Is it lack of meat they were deprived of growing up? The excessive hugging and reinforcement that they were all geniuses and never wrong? What is it?

If they did their research, or cared about facts, then they would know the genesis of the "OK" hate symbol meme is just a troll on one of the chans. However one doesn't need to research to know the idea is silly. The fact that you can't take a position on this revealing.

Funny how you can focus on that part of the OP, but clearly fail to read my SNIPs or the full article... From my SNIP

    SNIP
“At least some white supremacists seem to have abandoned the ironic or satiric intent behind the original trolling campaign and used the symbol as a sincere expression of white supremacy,” the ADL said.
    ENDSNIP

So, to draw the conclusion (for you), they did research it, know the genesis of the meme, and have since decided it's become a real thing...

You can disagree with their conclusion, but assuming they didn't research it thoroughly is pretty lame...

Correct, the ADL decided it's a real thing, which undermines whatever credibility they might have had. Just beacause a group of people wave a magic wand and declare such and such, doesn't make it so. Don't be afraid to think for yourself.

Who says I'm not? I didn't say I'm going to stop using the sign... quite the opposite, in fact...

Don't be afraid to read everything in an OP...

So, you're not Sweden, and you're siding with common sense instead of the ADL. Good on you!
