US diplomat’s wife leaves UK after becoming suspect in fatal road crash

    It is a clear abuse, though sadly not unusual. While crimes involving diplomats & their families are rarely as serious as this, it is quite common for their nations to shield them from consequence by invoking immunity.

    Given that the nation involved is a respected and long standing ally with a highly respected legal system the US should waive immunity & return the lady to the UK to face the authorities.

    I agree that it’s an abuse of immunity, in the current climate I can’t see her being returned to the UK now she’s out of the country.

    I’d love to hear her defence if immunity was waived as to why she shouldn’t be retuned

    This was a tragic consequence of the USA driving on one side of the road and every other country drives on the other side of the road. It was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.

    Trump can certainly help in this case but to blame him is much too much of a stretch ;) . If he is unwilling to help (behind the scenes) then he does hold some accountability

    Diplomatic immunity inherently invites abuse.

    If I had my own country, diplomatic immunity would only apply to objects (to protect sensitive communications) and never to people. I wouldn't blame the UK (or any nation) that barred foreign diplomats immunity from criminal investigation.

    But the fact is the UK (and every other nation) does allow diplomatic immunity. The People of the UK should be bitching to their own govt about this. They have a right to investigate this death. But ultimately its their own govt that has consented on their behalf to grant diplomatic immunity.

    DI is imo just the big 'club' of diplomatic elites protecting eachother from justice in the UK, the US and everywhere. Its the political elite making eachother/themselves above the law.

    Millions of Americans have gone to England and Ireland for years and years and driven on the left without killing people.The fact that she fled is proof she knows she was at fault.

    Diplomats in NYC break the law often, some commit felonies and serious felonies and get away with it, the most they get is banned from the country.

    I was told that the reason diplomat immunity came about was to Protect diplomats from false imprisonment in other countries. That makes sense but its also an out for people that break the law to get away with it.

    This english family that lost their son couldnt give a **** less about diplomatic immunity and I dont blame them
