More than 100,000 people are estimated to have attended a pro-Scottish independence march through the streets of Edinburgh.

Groups and organisations who support separation from the UK joined the All Under One Banner (AUOB) procession on Saturday.

Organisers estimated that more than 100,000 people took part in the event.

Gary Kelly, of AUOB, said: “It’s buzzing – the rain may be on but the people are not deterred.

“Our appetite for independence is still alive.”

Gemma MacFadyen has backed Scottish independence since she was a child.

The 34-year-old from Edinburgh said: “I’m here to support the cause for independence.

“To be honest, after the last referendum I was a bit deflated and disenfranchised and I was not going to be taking part anymore.

“But recently after a trip to the west coast of Scotland I’ve been re-inspired - so I’m here today.

“I’ve not really been caught up in the whole Brexit debate, I’m not bothered about that.

“But I am for another independence referendum, as soon as possible – it should’ve been ages ago.”

Bands, bikers, dogs, people in fancy dress and countless Saltire flags were all part of the rally towards the Meadows.

Chants of “What do we want? Independence” could also be heard roaring up the Royal Mile.

Harry Baird (19) wanted to join what he believed would be the biggest rally in the country’s history.

The apprentice marine engineer from Orkney said: “There’s a lot more than I thought I would see, to be honest.

“(I want) more radical and instant Scottish independence.

“Any change from what it is now would be worth it.”

The march began at Holyrood Park at 1pm and began proceeding up the Royal Mile from there.

AUOB’s rally through Edinburgh in October last year was estimated by organisers to have attracted more than 100,000 people, although Police Scotland put the attendance figure to around 20,000.

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon did not join the event but said she was there “in spirit”.

She tweeted: “Good luck to everyone marching for independence in Edinburgh later. I’m not able to be there in person today, but I will be with you in spirit. Have a great day. And be in no doubt – independence is coming. #indyref”– PA

So 20,000 people out of 5.5 million and one poll in August showing a majority in favour of independence and you somehow think it’s all changed.

in reality it’s the same situation as it has been for a long time, independence running slightly behind but too close to know for sure.

I guess you think this is a boost for the EU somehow

No, i think Scotland deserves better than a inbred Queen, horsefaced people and descissions made over their head from a foreign power. In this case England.

Well, if you cross out the queen, you’ll see that the Scottish people get all of that from the EU.

They seem to be quite happy about that, since they prefer the EU over the UK.

How many people live in Scotland? 100,000 don’t represent a majority.

Hey Sobo! I wouldn't concern myself about Britain. According to the London based economists at 'Credit Suisse', Germany is now the new sick man of Europe.

The last sick man was the Ottoman Empire and you know what happened to them.

But isn't Germany a foreign power? So they want to change one foreign power for the other, not too smart.

Be careful Sobo, because Johnson said if the EU doesn't stop the nonsense, he'll send them Farage.

Scottish independence does not mean they will get to join the EU. Your own leaders repeatedly said that before Scottish independence vote.

Also, polls tend to be wrong.

We will see, SNP wants a new referendum. Scotts hate the English and it will be interesting how they react on BREXIt, something they voted against.

Scotland is much more integrated with the UK than with EU. A break from UK will inflict much more pain to Scotland than a break from the EU.
EU will not accept any country that is economically unstable - Scottish will have to live and rebuild their economy and infrastructure as an independent nation for quite a few years.

Those 100,000 are just radicals, all countries have them. They don’t represent a majority.

And from larger perspective - I don’t really care if UK becomes England. I’m talking about common sense - EU in its current form won’t last for too long. Last recession almost killed it and sparked nationalist sentiments in member states. The UK never fully integrated to EU and had different rules apply to it. UK doesn’t belong there. If Scottish people want to inflict two major breaks onto themselves then who am I to judge?

So the 52% of Scottish who want independence are radicals but the 5"% radicals that wanted BREXIT are not? ha ha ha

Having one common currency across the entire EU is a great benefit that Britain never went for.It is a pain in the butt going from the free state of Ireland into the six counties and having to change currency. The Scots thought they had a majority when they held the last vote that wound up losing

Truth in advertising, please! Historically the Scots have embraced their overlords so it's unlikely to be different this time. What's happening is that they're exchanging the current played out overlord for the new hotness in aristocracies: EU bureaucrats

100,000 is a few radicals compared to total population.
And polls don’t mean anything - polls predicted Scotland will leave and they stayed, they also predicted a no vote on Brexit and they were wrong. In the US polls promised us an overwhelming victory of Hillary and look at what we got.
You want to know the opinion of those people - do a real referendum. And according to the last one - Scotland voted to stay in the UK.

Having common currency kills your ability to regulate and control it. Euro is actually one of the biggest evils of EU. If there was no euro Greeks would be able to get out of their debt problem with much less pain and austerity. And euro is being controlled to the benefit of one country - Germany.

The German royal family aka the Windsors have basically only ceremonial show power. But I can see why the Scott's do not want those Khardashian types representing them.

The EU is a LOT bigger than all that would be left of the UK if Scotland left, both physically and economically
