Similar to JC Penny, sadly they did not invest in smaller stores
selling their main stuff, name brands, and some "seasonal".
Target has such a small store near the Univ. of California, Irvine campus
and a major Target a few miles away in Irvine.

At onetime you could buy everything you would ever need cradle to grave in Sears, from a cradle to a house to your gravestone, sad to see how the passage of time and technology has done them in.

It should be viewed as political as it is a reflection of our economy. We at the same time have Target employees complaining that since Target raised their hourly pay they simultaneously slashed their hours resulting in lower pay. They are complaining they cannot survive now.

Maybe the employees can join the horse and buggy union and help change things for the better.

It's a sad situation, but how can they compete with the internet? Walmart is next.

The last time I went into a Walmart, 30% of the shelves were empty. But they went online. You order online and then pick it up or have it delivered. And they link to a vast range of products. They are even linking to things like industrial controls and sensors.

There may still be a use for brick and mortar as distribution centers. The cost of shipping can be significant. If you pick it up yourself at the store, no shipping charge.

Huge loss of employment with so many retailers going under.

The SEARS stores near me have mostly been empty. The customers are not there.

I think consumers changed their purchasing habits after the Recession.

But mostly what I think has happened is the younger generation is poorer than their parents, and as each generation has bumped up into an older age bracket, this is the group of people who would have been shopping at Sears but are not.

Remember in the 90s consumers used to load up their cart to the brim with all sorts of things they didn't need? Today more of them are shopping at value stores and being much more prudent the type of things they put in their cart.

At my local Walmart, they just doubled the number of self-serve checkout units; there are only one or two full-service checkout lines left.

Sears lost sight of their market. Many of us grew up with Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Wards catalogs. They sold to the general public. When Walmart came along, Sears bragged that their headquarters was the beautiful Sears Tower in Chicago while Walmart had a bunch of buildings in Bentonville Arkansas.

Sears stores became nicer and more expensive, but they continued to try to sell to the less fluent people who could no longer afford what they were selling.

Their products were good and they had unbelievable warranties on their tools, but cost more than most people wanted to pay.

Craftsman lawn tractors and Craftsman tools have been sold by Lowes for quite awhile now. Just bought a Craftsman air compressor at Lowes.

Without the Craftsman brand Sears had zero chance of survival.

And it's been twenty years or more since there was a blue light special.

The creation of Amazon was really a power grab by lesbians. Hey, it’s right there in the name!

    Definition of amazon

    (Entry 1 of 2)

1 capitalized : a member of a race of female warriors of Greek mythology

2 often capitalized : a tall strong often masculine woman

There is a store, Amazon, Microsoft... Apple, one of those, where you just walk in, get what you want, and walk out. They identify you I assume using facial recognition technology, log your items with RFID as you exit, and bill you automatically.

Sears really had something wrong with their marketing.
For some reason, I never wanted to walk into their stores. There is always something totally unappealing about it.
A good marketing consulting firm would probably be able to point it out and offer some solutions.

Well that explains my infatuation with the website! I'm glad you brought that to my attention, I was wondering why I was always torn between Amazon or Pornhub now its all very clear to me ¯\_(º¸º)_/¯

Sears was probably best positioned to be Walmart or even Amazon. They just didn't know it.

Their catalog service was amazon before the internet. They discontinued it.

Sears was unable to see the changing retail landscape, and they could have dominated.

Why bother with self service checkout? You can checkout on an e-commerce website without leaving home.
