That's been happening for years, this isn't some giant surprise. Sears in particular is mall based, malls are shrinking its only natural for mall based stores to close, but that's true of dozens of franchises. It almost seems as though you are trying to make this into something it isn't...

I mostly buy groceries at Walmart. I'm not sure what I want until I examine the items on the shelves.

A lot of people like to see the merchandise they are purchasing.

Buying clothing online just don't work out well. There will always be brick and mortar for that segment of retail.

Grocery items? I think not. At least for anything but can and dry food items.

I have no problem, with Levi's, shirts or shoes.. I have two nice suits, they fit well and are always in fashion.

I am a accomplished baker and pit boss and other than cuts of beef, pork and poultry all my bulk flours and spices definitely are purchased online!

I didn't say anything about grocery items. I referred to self checkouts.

Of course, but not enough to keep the brick and mortar stores standing.

Not really no there is nothing political about it. Sears has been in a death spiral since they dropped catalogue sales a few decades back. Part of the problem was a willingness to replace crap that wasn't broken through daily wear and tear but through abuse free of charge. My wife worked for sears service for 20 years swears to this day there are three sexes male female and public because everyone is different in public. She was threaten by some ******* who was mad because the maintenance agreement only covered one lawn mower blade a year. By the way sears service went bye bye in the early 2000's. It costs more to fix most small appliances now than it does to buy a new ones.

    Ah, the old Sears Catalog...
When I was a kid in the 60's, we had a choice between the Sears catalog and the base exchange where we were stationed in Japan. Christmas shopping started just after school started. When we came back to the states, I had to laugh at my grandmother, who kept old catalogs in her outhouse (just in case).

I see a lot of Sears tools being sold in big box stores. I always liked their tools.

So we've gone from small stores on Main Street to Sears stores in malls to Walmarts the size of small malls to Amazon and other online stores. What a world...

I just thought of this--My in-laws owned a Sears house. They were sold as kits and were briefly popular between the wars. The quality of material was pretty good.

They sold Sears Craftsmen home kits many of which are still standing and still in good shape.

Retail sales declined for the month of September, for the first time in seven months.Certainly won't help in keeping malls open and people employed.

They say 80% or more of the Craftsman homes in America are Sears homes that were bought from a Sears catalog.

To build the homes you needed hand tools and Sears started manufacturing Sears Craftsman tools in which the tools got its Craftsman name from.

I HATE shopping. I call it purchasing, and I usually charge someone to do it.

I much, much prefer purchasing over the internet.

Sadly- the consequence of two things. One is that Sears failed to adapt and move to join the e-marketing trend, and secondly- that K-mart mentality took over the Sears values and business model.
    Double whammy.

I don't know why people are so shocked by all of this, Sears is overpriced.

I think the problem with them is they failed to evolve.
