Will always remember the sound of a mortar round leaving its tube and what would soon follow.

Depending on the conditions, weather, humidity, temperature and wind direction you would hear the rounds leaving their tubes and those who heard it would start yelling "in coming" giving you a few seconds to find protection and you could always tell who was married because they were running the fastest.

During the mortar attack the first round hit me and killed the guy to my left so the yelling of "incoming " was too late for the guy on my left. Two of us survivors of my group earned a Medivac Chopter ride and all the morphine we could handle for weeks after that. Amazing that I did not become an addict.

    I never said that.

But today's soldiers have been numbed by death and taking a life while growing up in a PC world with violent video games, gangsta rap and violet Hollywood liberal movies until they actually end up seeing it and doing it. May explain why so many suffer from PTSD today.

Congress has actually made it extremely difficult to train today's soldiers for combat. They just aren't properly trained for war.

CNN reporters are on the battlefield searching for an unlawful kill while JAG officers second guess every time a soldier pulls the trigger doesn't help.

The latest study on PTSD may have found the answer.

Before 1967 Vietnam War, Korean War, WW ll, WW l American soldiers and Marines went to war on slow moving troopships and returned from war the same way giving the combat vet time to decompress before returning to the real war.

Starting during the Vietnam War American troops started arriving to the war zone on a commercial Boeing 707's and returned home again on a Boeing 707. Not enough time to decompress.

Today a soldier is on U.S. soil and 24 hours later he's in Afghanistan or the Middle East. When his tour of duty is up, 24 hours later he's back in the USA with no time to decompress.

Also today's soldiers have direct contact with home with cell phones, Fox News on satellite television and internet access. Before the only contact with the world and family was snail mail and armed forces radio.

Back in Vietnam your main source of what was going on back home was the cherry, the FNG, the guy who had just arrived in-country.

Pretty basically you had no freaking idea what was going on in the world or even in-country than what you were able to see or hear.

I had to read an after action reports to understand what actually happened during an operation and believe me, Marine Corps after action reports don't leave nothing out. They even tell you how many aspirins navy corpsmen handed out and how many c-rats were eaten.

Mattis needs to take his own advice. From the article:

In an interview with NPR promoting his book, Mattis declined to discuss his relationship with Trump. "I don't discuss sitting presidents," Mattis said. "I believe that you owe a period of quiet."

Mattis then goes on to do just the opposite. Perhaps he is overrated.

    Puerile and frankly extremely unprofessional.

it's sad when Republican start two 10+ year wars and then, decide to pull out and let ISIS take over a location where we only had about 1000 troops handling everything fine

we asked the kurds to help us fight isis and then turned out backs on them - sad - will any country help us in the fight against isis in the future now

Posts here seem to question whether or not he has ever been in a firefight?

John McCain's service was questioned by those who never served one second. Kerry's service was questioned and crap was made up about him.
Now Mattis is being crapped on and lies are made up about him.
All done because of political reasons.

I'm not a liberal. And the number of troops in the Mid East has INCREASED under Trump. Nice try, though . . . lacking in homework, but nice try.

Sigh, Liberals are not two dimensional caricatures coming out of a copy machine. Someday you will have to listen to what 'liberals' tell you they believe. You don't even know how your opposition thinks, and that is lesson # 1 on beating them. Learn to ask us questions and listen to the answers you hear.

Did life teach you that when Trump won? Because as I recall during the Obama years there were conservative voices crying in the wilderness to deaf ears. I don't think it's because we don't hear each other though, we just don't give a damn.

Sure we know how you think, but a lot of people are still in disbelief that the left is echoing the ways of Venezuela and the former Soviet Union.
