And another reason we need to get out of the UN.

Venezuela wins a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council

CARACAS, Venezuela — The government of President Nicolás Maduro won a seat Thursday on the U.N. Human Rights Council, a controversial victory for a regime accused of using intimidation, torture and murder to cling to power.

The Maduro government, no longer recognized as legitimate by the United States and around 50 other countries, had sought a return to the 47-member panel to counter an image of international isolation — and thwart investigations into its own alleged abuses.

Venezuela and regional rival Brazil beat out Costa Rica for the two Latin American seats up for election. Costa Rica had declared its candidacy only this month in an effort to deny Venezuela a three-year term, but the support of China, Russia, Cuba and other allies gave the socialist state the win....

Who knows how these international organizations reach their decisions.

Haven,t see Venezuela in the news recently. Are they on the verge of economic collapse?

To play the Devil's Advocate, wasn't Maduro legally elected? I forget what his recently repatriated opponent's name is?

Wish the Venezuelan situation was more in the news as this is certainly an important story.

When last I saw, there were Venezuelans filling up water bottles from what looked like a busted water line.

Don't they have abundant oil reserves?

Sorry for my ignorance on this important subject.

Resources + stable government = prosperity
Resources + banana republic = tyranny. A small collection of individuals close to the ruling party can sustain government.

    Last time I checked....
The US got a torture facility on Cuba and plenty of black sites around the world where such things is done for them.
Bit weird to go and think Venezuela has no right to be there because it aint as civilized as the US.

Venezuela is on the verge of an economic collapse. There is some controversy about whether Maduro won his last election legitimately.

They have abundant oil reserves, but the Chavistas have run the national oil company into the ground by theft (as most socialist governments do).

You're just calling it stupid. But that's just hot air, not based on anything.

And... come to thing of it.
It's not just that the US got black sites and Gitmo where inmates are tortured without any trial. The US also has racism institutionalized. Under the same circumstances, the black people are systematically given a longer sentence than white people. Congrats on that.

You're right, America is every bit as bad as Venezuela.

Venezuela should totally build a wall to keep Americans out, and you should hurry up and immigrate to Venezuela before they do it, and shut you out.

I never stated that. But looking at the US human rights record. It aint that pretty.
It also sponsors the genocide in Jemen. For instance.

There are no laws that dictate different sentencing guidelines based on race.
    Try harder.

    That is true.
But in the US nobody gets persecuted for their political views and nobody steals votes.

Your conspiracy theory imaginings of what goes on are irrelevant to reality. My brother worked as a security guard at Gitmo while in the Navy, and if anyone was tortured, it was the Navy prison guards by the inmates. He detailed some of the sick **** the inmates would do to them and they were forbidden to retaliate in any way against the prisoners. Whatever "black sites" the US had in the past (think 1950s) have long since gone by the boards.

Racism is not institutionalized in the way that you are suggesting, in that we don't have Jim Crow laws that distinguish between people of different races in terms of sentencing. Bias may exist still, but that requires cultural change, since the laws and institutions are as color blind as we can make them. And not everything comes out exactly as you suggest. For juvenile offenders, for example, a study in Louisiana showed black & white judges alike gave longer sentences to juveniles of their own race than they did to those of a different race.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...g-racial-bias-in-the-criminal-justice-system/

Also interesting to note that the difference is not that significant between races, but IS rather significant between the sexes, with the difference being just 4 months longer for blacks than whites in terms of sentencing, but a full year less for women than for men. I would suggest a blind sentencing regime, that a judge/jury should have to hand down a sentence without knowing whether the defendant is black or white, male or female, but that would be difficult to integrate with the Constitutional right to confront one's accusers in court.

What is your problem accepting the reality of Venezuela and the absurdity of that country and it's government being on a human rights commission that you have to engage in such a stretch to criticize the US as if it mitigates that Venezuela is a country under an oppressive dictatorial regime where's it people's are literally starving and have even just run out of water? Can you point me to a vast migration and fleeing the country going on here because of human rights violations as we are seeing in Venezuela?

I agree, but the two are not mutually exclusive. How about we put the Czechs on the HRC, they suffered under the Nazis, then we sold them out to Stalin for 50 years. They finally regained their freedom.

    Compromise?

Like we don't use intimidation and torture - on a regular basis - to achieve our aims. I am sensing a Pot vs Black Kettle moment :)
