Should a guy who makes more pay more for the same coverage?

That is not how it works in places with Universal Healthcare - People who make more do pay more taxes so indirectly the rich would contribute more.

Everyone would benefit from taking a Trillion or more out of our healthcare spend.

    WE have it

Fraction of the cost and we rank second in the world (uk beats us)

As for the republicans - they have had ample opportunities including when Trump promised “something better”

At this point in time I doubt anyone is going to believe they will deliver

    Not really
Flat rate payroll tax to cover base line coverage and your individual choice whether you want private coverage because if you do you get 90% back on your tax return (10% would cover emergency room visits)

Public option also assists with covering those places where hospitals are not that viable financially I.e. rural and remote locations

It would be a problem if it wasn't cheaper. But it is.

This bull was grabbed by the horns back when medicare/medicaid was instituted. The problem is that the democrats will keep trying to push the envelope each and every time until the government owns everybody. If Hillary had won, Obamacare would have been pushed into overdrive to become super hill care.

I take a page out of Nancy's book and just say no.

I'm open to team Blue making the case that Universal/Single Payer is the cheaper option. They have several very Blue states that would be good testbeds for a Universal/Single Payer system. But time after time, these proposed plans have fallen by the wayside. If you want evidence that your idea will work in the US, then demonstrate it.

Healthcare costs us in healthcare premiums, out of pocket, payroll taxes, and sickness from delaying care. It isn't going to destroy us if we shift some of those costs to taxes.

Eliminating health insurance will mean that if you get an expensive health condition you will be financially ruined or unable to get care. Worst idea of all. You don't have any healthcare solutions so I'd rather have a universal healthcare system that will cost a lot less and cover everyone.

    Insurance makes healthcare cost more!

We need to get the middle man out of it.
You go to the doctor and thr government picks up part of the bill. You know what your heart surgery is going to cost before you agree to have it.

There is no need to have an insurance company making a profit off you going to the doctor.

But the problem if is I get cancer or need long-term care, I won't be able to afford it out of pocket. Insurance does suck in a lot of ways. But not having insurance sucks even more. Thats why most people in the private market get health insurance.

Generally states aren't a good idea for testing expensive reforms. The rich people will move out and those people who need help the most will move in. State borders are very open which creates this problem. This works better on a national level where national borders are very closed.

You are not making a good case for a system that will lower healthcare costs if you are afraid people in those states will make a run for the border, Berlin Wall style, in order to escape those lower healthcare costs.

In other words, frankly your argument doesn't make sense, or you didn't explain it well enough.

Rich people will run the border to get low taxes, and they are of course free to leave, but have to pay a tax for it. But poor and sick people will cross into the border to get healthcare. The system only works when you have a balanced pool. For example, we limit immigration to prevent millions of immigrants from getting public benefits. States don't have strong enough borders to do this so they aren't going to work.

But you just said you want to ban health insurance. So if I get a major illness, I'm done.

If everyone would have done that from the beginning we wouldn’t be in such a pickle now.

That’s my fear going forward if we implement something universal. We have a history of screwing up even good ideas. I have little confidence the greedy nature of the general population will allow anything to work well long term.

We can't discuss healthcare until people actually care about their health.

    5 easy steps to free universal healthcare;

    1) eat twice as much vegetables in weight as meat
    2) get your heart rate up to 140-160 for twenty mins everyday.
    3) drink 1 gallon of water everyday
    4) don't smoke
    5) don't drink or do drugs

This right here is why health care costs are so high in America. Not because of greedy businesses. We have people with easily avoidable health issues.

You cannot drink 40oz of soda per day and expect inexpensive health care.
You cannot eat fast food 3 times a week and expect inexpensive health care..

Most people do both of these.

Yup Americans are greedy when it comes to healthcare.

    Government never does anything right..

But it will be a hell of a lot better if the plan is developed by conservatives than liberals.

I'm always amused at the platitudes peddled off as fact in these types of discussions about healthcare.

Want to fix America’s health care? First, focus on food

    Dariush Mozaffarian, Tufts University

    Food and health

Our dietary habits are the leading driver of death and disability, causing an estimated 700,000 deaths each year. Heart disease, stroke, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancers, immune function, brain health – all are influenced by what we eat.

For example, our recent research estimated that poor diet causes nearly half of all U.S. deaths due to heart disease, stroke and diabetes. There are almost 1,000 deaths from these causes alone, every day.

By combining national data on demographics, eating habits and disease rates with empirical evidence on how specific foods are linked to health, we found that most of problems are caused by too few healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and too much salt, processed meats, red meats and sugary drinks.
