Does this intellectually challenged person not realize that the federal government does not control local schools? That all these hundreds and hundreds of school systems have their own contracts with employees that dictate hours? That there is no mechanism to enforce such a mandate on something which constitutionally and statorially she does not control from her little office on Capital Hill.
How do people who are totally clueless about thhe government get elected to make the laws?

Sen. Kamala Harris introduces bill to extend school day by 3 hours

(WFLA) – Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) thinks the school day should look more like a workday.

The presidential hopeful introduced a bill that would extend the school day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mother Jones reports. The bill has five Democratic co-sponsors.

Harris explained the reasoning behind the bill in a statement, saying it would help working parents who struggle to find childcare between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The typical school day in America ends around 3 p.m., which is hours before 70 percent of parents stop working, according to Harris.

I don't think you or your site are representing what she is suggesting.... Of course she can't make a bill that extends school hours.

    SNIP
Her plan: A pilot program that gives money to 500 schools that serve a high proportion of low-income families to develop a school schedule that better matches the work schedule. Each recipient school would receive up to $5 million dollars over five years to keep their doors open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no closures except for weekends, federal holidays, and emergencies.
    ENDSNIP

She's offering money to schools (or school systems?) that stay open until 6pm...

Not sure how I feel about this, but I've certainly heard worse ideas this year... from both sides..

Dumb idea in my opinion. 9 hours of mandatory school time 5 days a week is plenty. Maybe an optional after school athletic, music, art or supervised play time would be beneficial to some parents and help keep kids off the streets for 3 hours unsupervised. Many school districts already have programs like this available.

Make kids hate public school more than they already do.

Is it extending the hours the school is open, or extending the teaching hours? Big difference. Considering the amount of time kids are spending on homework, this could be an excellent suggestion - kids doing homework during that time. Tutors could be hired to 'supervise', and then it would ensure the kids are getting the help they need with that homework.

They're still prisoners in the school.

It was a major problem for me every single school day but we made it work, it wasn't easy and it was costly.

Generally speaking I support the concept of more after school program options.

That's pretty much what she's suggesting... Implementing some after school time for school districts that cannot afford something like this...

    SNIP
Under Harris’ plan, teachers and faculty are not required to work additional hours, and the extra time would be used for extracurricular activities. Teachers can, however, sign up for an extra shift and be paid the rate they get during normal schools hours.
    ENDSNIP

Seems to me it beats having a bunch of kids sitting at home unsupervised or hanging around the streets..

Seems it might be worth a pilot program anyway....

Yet another great idea. Expect public schools to perform baby sitter duties.

Why can't they expect schools to do just one thing? And that is educate students?

$5 million for just 500 schools. There are over 130,000 schools where is the money going to come from? And again this is NOT a federal matter.

Perhaps she should worry about the multitude of FEDERAL MATTERS on her desk.

Yeah, we need more home schoolers trained by bible thumpers. Stock up on ammo, assault rifles, canned water and MREs up at the compound. Who needs a program that would help working parents and their kids. Our tax money should be spent on overbloated defense spending, corporate welfare programs and making sure that international bank swindlers get a huge cut of our wealth.

    The Republican Way....

never pass, in fact the school day should start later or maybe have a day and evening option - could double the number of students a single school building could support

what we need is more federal options for day care

Just another reason why Kamala will lose her bid for the White House. She is just plain off of her rocker.

Don't worry. If Bernie gets elected, kids will be sent to mandatory re-education camps a la soviet.

Wow you need to learn to read. The most important words in her proposal are these two: 'Pilot Program'.

Here's a good link, guyshttps://www.motherjones.com/politic...-work-day-kamala-harris-wants-to-change-that/ What she wants to do, is have 500 school districts choose to create such a program and apply for a federally funded grant to help their program. Her proposal provides some of broad parameters under which they must structure their program to qualify for the grants. They create it. They tweak it, they implement it, and if they decide to they even abandon it in 5 years.

"Schools are to spend the first year surveying parents, teachers, and community members to determine what sort of extended school day would work best for their particular school population. “What’s exciting about this is that it’s an innovation bill,” Brown explains of Harris’ design. “We don’t have the solutions yet, but they’re going to come from local communities that know what works best for their parents and students.”

In a small town that I lived in, Jefferson Oregon pop 3,000, did exactly the same thing for several years, to help provide a positive place for kids to be, during normal working ours using the preexisting structures, and spaces sitting in the schools they already had ! Problem was they ran out of money from the school district so they had to shut it down. She has an idea for this too. These districts have to come up with at least some seed money options for what they can do after the five years are up to wean them off, instead of shutting it down

"The bill would also require the school to find a private or non-federal public funding source, such as state grants or philanthropy organizations, to match 10 percent of the federal grant money, a stipulation intended to help the programs remain sustainable after the initial grant money has run out. The matches can be money or an in-kind contribution in the form of volunteer staff time, meeting spaces, or equipment."

This is a good bill because other districts will learn what works and what does not because these districts will be providing data "At the end of the five years, the Education Department would publish a report documenting the best practices, as well as changes in parental employment, student performance, and teacher retention rates to be used to inform a future broader program."

What people tend to forget, is that absenteeism in the workplace is costing American businesses big dollars and this quirk between the school day and the work day is compromising productivity with staffing shortages during days when parents cannot figure out what to do with their 8 year old when their child care option flakes out, and school gets out .

This pilot program is a good idea.
