When the idea of self-possession first entered public discourse, in Europe, in the 1600s, it was mocked as "everyone is a king thinking. The line, "every man's home is his castle", was originally a punchline to a joke at the expense of the idea of self-possession. Liberty, the individual's authority over and responsibility for them self, extends from a belief in self-possession. Private property also extends from the belief that each owns them self and therefore owns the product of their industry and trade. It's easy to forget that, until 1776, almost everyone who ever lived was owned by someone else. Who owns you?
One does not forfeit ownership of them self every time that it is infringed upon. Self-possession can be violated, but it cannot be alienated. Self-possession was not thought of, by its seventeenth century proponents, as a new thing. They thought of it as an inalienable thing that had been being violated for quite some time..
Everything that I am left to believe about politics (public-relationships) extends from the belief that each owns them self.
Private property such as real estate belongs to the person that can afford to keep the govt. from taking what you supposedly own.
Liberty, the individual's authority over and responsibility for them self, extends from self-possession. Private property also extends from self-possession.
That seems like a rather loose definition of ownership. Do I then own everything that will not criticize me?
Self-possession (one's ownership of them self), is individualistic. I do not think of myself or others, first and foremost, as members of groups. Socialism has a hard time asking the question, "Who owns you?", because the question itself lays bare the cost of socialism.
My wife. Anyone who can write a list of chores on the white board on the wall for me to do on the weekends and I actually do them...owns me.
My children owned me until the day each one set out on their own and were no longer depending on me to provide for their desired and endeavors . My wife doesn't own me as we are in constant negotiations for the right of ownership of each other. So no man owns me, the woman's percentage of ownership varies by the moment.
You belong to the corporate entity that persuades you to work and give up yer pay to buy their products..
Can you not create the items that you would pay others for? You can remove that control factor quite easily, if you wanted to. You are not owned by the entity that pays you for your time and labor. You have other methods of obtaining the currency for barter. YOU are the slave to your own limitations.
Oh jahh, because no one criticizes President Trump...I'm thinking this post was not, well thought out.
Good answer. You own yourself and therefore own the product of your industry and trade. Self-possession is what justifies private property. Self-possession is also what justifies liberty (the individual's authority over and responsibility for them self).
