When/if impeachment goes to the senate there's going to be an effect and I'm not sure that Democrats have actually realized it. When impeachment goes to the Senate all Senators will be required to attend. How many of the Democratic Presidential hopefuls are Senators?

    Six.

Warren, Sanders, and Harris are the big ones.
Booker, Klobuchar, and Bennet are the small ones.

That means that of the big contenders only Biden will actually be able to be out campaigning. If this goes to the Senate this is going to change the campaign field. Warren, Sanders, and Harris will not be able to campaign.

But what about Biden? He is going to be called before the Senate to testify. You know it, and I know it. Doesn't matter what side of the aisle you're on or whether you are for or against it. Due to that he won't be able to campaign as much also. And it might even damage his reputation and thereby hurting his campaign.

Which due to all this it means that they will drop in the polls and at best some of the little guys will be able to take more of the "screen shots" so to speak.

This "could" be a good thing. Maybe Gabbard will actually have a chance as only being a Rep in the House she will be able to campaign. If she can last long enough to last until when/if this goes to the Senate. Gabbard might have a chance to win against Trump but the DNC is pretty much against her as she is anti-war, she wants our men and women home. And the DNC has shown that they actually do want wars. Or at least want to continue the ones that we are in.

But is this what Democrats really want? If Democrats want to win the White House then they're going to want their big wigs. Which means Biden, Warren, Sanders or Harris. If this is so then maybe Trump won't be impeached after all. Like everyone says, Impeachment is a political process. Its more about politics than any sort of actual trial. Considering that their "witnesses" have only 2nd, 3rd or even 4th hand information I can only conclude that all that they're trying to do is use the impeachment process as a way to smear President Trump. Make him look so bad that people will be voting more against him than they will be voting FOR a Dem candidate. The result will be the same, Trump out, Dem in. At least that is their hope. I think that is something that they did learn from 2016. That people can often vote for someone because they are voting against someone.

Is this really what we as a Nation want? To have Impeachment weaponized? To have a majority of votes be for someone because you are against someone instead of voting for someone because you agree with their stances more than someone else's stances? Some may not see a difference, but there is. In one you're voting for someone because of what they offer. The other you're voting for someone even though you can't stand them either...just think that they're slightly less despicable. That is essentially taking the whole "voting for the lesser of two evils" to a WHOLE 'nother level. Is this really what we want? Is this what we are reduced to?

This is of course what happened in 2016. A lot of people voted for Trump because they disliked Hillary more. Even though they didn't like Trump also. I thought that maybe that would be a one off. I had hoped that it would be. I had hoped that the Elites on Capitol Hill would learn from 2016 and do better. Instead they have gotten worse. More extremist. More hateful. More tribal. More divisive. And they're dragging the rest of the country with them.

I don't think they will actually vote on impeachment. I think they will try to drag this out as long as possible in order to interfere in the elections. If it goes to the senate, they will be able to subpoena who they want and ask questions that Schiff prevents from being asked or answered. They don't want that.

The Senate does not meet on weekends and there are these things called planes and enable people to fly all over the nation to attend campaign events.

Then there is social media whereby candidates can stay in touch with their campaigns.

On top of that there is C-Span and live streaming so unless a vote is going to be called a Senator could be out on the road and still know what is happening.

There is another aspect to this that is being ignored on the right.

The GOP Senate has a RECORD NUMBER of seats in play and some of those could be facing primary challenges. It would only take 6 of those and then the problem facing both parties is identical.

Sorry but Senate members HAVE to be in their seats for this. They will not be able to be out campaigning. And 2 days out of a week is not enough to campaign effectively. Especially if they want to campaign on the other side of the country. Even with a plane that can use up most of a day JUST to get there, and then they have to get back. Which will leave very little time for them to do much of anything.

As for the number of seats in play in the Senate, most will not have to worry as most of them are pretty secure in Red States. And the Senate will be able to drag it out as long as they want. Meaning that they may not even have to vote which is what would put their seats in jeopardy. Maybe in jeopardy since the GOP can call their own witnesses and they will be able to ask and get answers that will make what has happened in the House look even worse.

The gist of the OP is that he thinks this will create an opening for Tulsi Gabbard.

    Boy...Trumpers just LOVE Gabbard huh?

    Wonder why...

-That's- what you got from this?

There's also a good chance that at some point, the senate will suspend the trial to confirm a new USSC justice.

"McConnell noted that, under Senate rules during an impeachment trial, the chamber would have to convene on most days and that "senators will not be allowed to speak, which will be good therapy for a number of them.""

Not much different that the Benghazi hearings that helped defeat Clinton. Or the Iran-Contra hearings. Or the Watergate hearings. Or the Whitewater hearings. Or the WMDs hearings.

Basically, if you don't want to be investigated constantly, don't become President.

Interesting. What questions do you think Schiff prevented Republicans from asking?

The Senate should drag out the proceedings as long as possible for the specific purpose of keeping Democrats off the campaign trail.. and the Republicans should tell them that to their faces and walk away...

There should be Republicans deliberately delaying the proceedings with technicalities, extended breaks, fact checking. Anything at all to undermine democratic campaigns..

"Mr chairman can we have a 15 minute recess i have a zit i need to pop"

"Granted. We will return in 30 minutes"

That's exactly what will happen. And that's what they do anyway normally. So it wouldn't get to the Senate until around February March. And this is impeachment. They should get all the info and take 2-3 months if need be.

Chief Justice Roberts will meet with McConnell and Schumer and establish "rules" for the trial. He'll then preside over the proceedings and move the trial along at a reasonable pace. I doubt he'll tolerate obvious acts to delay the proceedings as long as possible.

Disclaimer: I believe that this impeachment sham is pushback against the investigations into the persons responsible for the RUSSIA! hoax.

Having said that, I think that a Senate trial, in which candidates would be kept off the trail and would overshadow the other candidates, would benefit them.

A Senate trial would divert attention away from the nuttiness of the Democrat candidates' platforms.

Maybe...but it brings up an important point - i.e. in our system, sovereignty rests with "the people," who transfer their sovereignty to their legislative representatives, NOT to the President, who is elected via the electoral college, who may or may not be elected by the popular vote.

We live in a Republic, and "the people" of the Republic elect both their representatives and their President. If you don't like living in a Republic, that's your problem, not ours.

He can simply claim "absolute immunity" like the Tramp hacks do and the Senate can do nothing without shooting down Tramp's BS also!!!!!

Schiff himself would be subject to questioning, do you think he wants that? This clown show will likely drag until Iowa, and if Biden doesn't win convincingly, this all disappears. Nobody is going to buy into impeachment if Biden isn't the nominee...

Of course that could easily backfire. The only thing keeping the GOP Senate from finding Tramp guilty is their fear of being primaried, and if they delay past the primaries there goes that threat!
