Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) said on Saturday that he’s not sure if marijuana is a gateway drug that leads to the use of other, more dangerous substances.

Biden, who in past years has clearly said he thinks cannabis is a gateway drug and has a long record of supporting legislation to ramp up the war on drugs, was answering a voter’s question about whether his position on marijuana has changed. “No, it hasn’t changed,” he told the town hall participant.

Biden appears to have a view that is different from other dem candidates, like Bernie Sanders or Kamala Harris.

Despite this, Biden is maintaining a clear lead over other candidates.

Will dem voters hold this against Joe?

    Video of Biden at link.

All I have ever wanted is it to be legal to cultivate 2 plants. That used to be the law in my jurisdiction and it worked great.

Bring back alcohol prohibition for all I care as long as it is legal to brew and distill. I sorely wish it wasn't 2 years prison to cultivate tobacco.

I have never heard of anyone cultivating tobacco, but 2 years seems excessive.

As a daily smoker of loose leaf tobacco in a society where a pack costs $40USD, I wish I could.

Then again, the law makes sense from a bureaucrat's perspective. The excise tax on tobacco exceeds the entire health budget in a country with universal healthcare. They need to protect their cash cow.

The 2 years is really for threatening their piggy bank, not the cultivation itself.

He sounds open minded and wants more research. That is reasonable to me. I say this as a medical marijuana user.

$40 a pack? I thought $14 in downtown Chicago is extremely excessive.
    Where do you live?

When will conservatives finally abandon the prohibition? I lean conservative, but I believe war on drugs is incredible waste of resources that ruins people’s lives - a directly opposite effect of the drug laws intent.

Australia. In downtown Sydney you cannot smoke even outdoors.

We have the most punitive tobacco laws in the world and the highest excise tax rates.

That was a 25g pack of loose rolling tobacco. A 25 smoke packet will run you about $30USD.

They keep reducing the amount you can bring back on a plane - it's now 20 cigarettes, or less than most packets which usually have 25 cigs.

Bureaucrats have to protect their racket.

Doesn't stop 16.7% of all tobacco smoked by weight being illicit tax free stuff. Us Australians have a proud history of telling city slicker autocrats to go **** themselves.

Unfortunately we also have a not-so-proud history of city slicker autocrats running the show.

You may have a point but Biden has a long history of opposing legalization-decades worth.

Remember John Boehner? When he left congress, he went back to his tobacco farms and started planting marijuana.

Thats when I figured it would really only be a matter of time until it was legalized.

My only opposition is that its treated as harmless which isn't true, and that it does not cut down on crime and in many cases increases it. (black market, robberies, cartel involvement, etc).

He's using very archaic terminology for 2019 I'd say.

Of course it's a gateway drug. Moronic prohibition laws force people to buy it from the same guy that sells meth and heroin.

Alcohol and tobacco are much more dangerous than cannabis. Many people die from it. Maybe because these substances are legal.

Cannabis is a top cause of psychosis for children.

Meaning they can't tell whats real and do dumb things.

My friends (grown male firefighters) have been threatened for putting out a grow house fire by the mexican mob.

It will be legalized soon. No state is going to turn down a source of several billion in taxes, nor will the Feds. The President really has very little to say about it and it should not be an issue in a Presidential election anyway.

Biden's little say (he oversee's federal law enforcement if he wins) is that its a gateway drug.

    I already heard that.
Unfortunately, some inexperienced teenagers exaggerate their cannabis use.

Rival gang members wanted the other one's greenhouse to burn down, eh?

The teens are dying because of it, its no small matter.

And no, there was no rival gang-just the cartel that stole their vehicle registrations out of their private cars while they were on a call.

    Not subtle message.

Same applies to Alcohol and Tobacco. Except that more people die from it because any adult can buy that stuff legally.

Ideally, Alcohol and Tobacco sales should also be limited, but then the black market would flourish.

Whatever we do, people want their drugs and always find a way to get them (and to die from them). :(

The Congress should have a say, but the President only indirectly. It will probably be an issue in the next Presidential election if it's not been overturned in the meantime. The only real issue in 2020 will be getting rid of Trump, anything else is just a distraction.
