I try to avoid using Amazon, but the convenience is hard to beat.

Salesforce.com supposedly has "customer relationship management" software that can help other retailers compete. May be too late.

It really is! And in this silly town it sometimes the only place you can get things you are used to! OK now Ima vent, I have always used Old Spice Denali deodorant, and for some weird ass reason these brick and mortar idiots cant seem to restock it! So now I'm scrubbing all my armpit hairs off trying to get whats left in the crack of my last tube or whatever you call the damn thing!

OK I feel better now ;)

@Ddyad and @ButterBalls try walmart.com ;) Same concept as Amazon, plus access to all of the stuff Walmart already carries.

The small retailers have to eliminate as much of their inventory as they can before the audits.

The question is, better at what? I am going there less and less... selection is waaay down, and some things are the same price at other retailers. I stock up on non perishables maybe once a month now, anything fresh comes from an actual grocery store.

Sorry, I should have specified snark. :)
I have found, virtually any retailer that has a brick and mortar store, is carrying less and less, and more and more online. Don't know where you are, but here in the southeast, there's Belk. You go online, and try and filter down their website to 'in store', and you might, MIGHT, get about a 25% response on goods. Same at WalMart. Bottom line, most retailers with an online presence are competition for Amazon.

Gotcha, yes I guess I missed the snark :)
The thing which sets Walmart apart from most other "retailers with an online presence" is that they are acting as a centralized hub for products which Walmart does not actually carry, much like Amazon does. They are intentionally trying to compete with Amazon for this space. You'll not only find Walmart products on Walmart's website, but you can find a myriad of things from secondary sellers as well. Like the example I used earlier of the Coach bag I bought ---- that's a brand which is upscale enough you'd never ever find it in a Walmart, but you can buy one from the website. (LOL out of curiosity I just typed in "Rolex" on the Walmart site, and sure enough, you can even get a Rolex thru Walmart LOL!!)

The worst part about small businesses is they often can't even capitalize on their one perk vs internet which is having items I want "right now" in stock. They often can't do that because they can't afford to stock massive amounts of merchandise. For example this past weekend I was looking for a part for my ATV and I gave first dibs to the local store as I usually do even though I know it'll be a few bucks more. I call them up and they say that they don't have it in stock but they can order it and it should be there for pickup in 5 - 7 days....

This is where my logic overrides my "morality". So I sort of needed the part quickly, they don't have it but they can order it. Well hell I can order it myself AND it'll be cheaper and also arrive much quicker than 5-7 days....There is no actual benefit to me the consumer to purchase this item from the local business in that case. So I need what most consumers would do which is order it on Amazon for around 25% less money and free prime shipping. I was more than willing to pay a few bucks more to purchase the item immediately, but since they didn't have it I ordered it online myself.

I fully understand that money spent in local business helps support the community and I also understand that many mom and pop stores are having a rough go of it when trying to compete with big box chains and Amazon. But I the consumer am just that, a consumer, I am not a charity organization. It's getting to the point now to where in many cases the consumer is basically donating money to the local business just to help them out while serving no benefit to the consumer himself. Even if an item is actually in stock at a local store I am willing to pay a few bucks extra for it, but I am not willing to pay 50% more for it if it's an already expensive item....

Our government is never responsible for economic growth. They can only hinder growth. Trump is less of a hindrance.

The convenience factor is the driving force for most consumers. As much as "society" praises the small business man and advocates for the support of the local stores we are all mostly guilty of choosing convenience over "morality" so to speak. Even if/when Amazon prices increase to brick and mortar prices folks will still likely choose online shopping over having to visit a physical store.

I am 100% guilty of this. I really don't like shopping and with the internet I can do hours of research on a particular item without the need for a professional sales rep to offer assistance. By the time I am ready to purchase a pricey item I have already done hours of research online by reading forums, reviews, youtube, etc. I know all I need to know and there is likely nothing the sales rep can tell me that I am not already aware of. This is what most folks do and more and more are doing it every day.

Online retail is the future and there is nothing anybody can really do about it. Pretty soon brick and mortar stores will be delegated to specialty shops for homemade guitars and whatnot.

I'm now just waiting for grocery delivery to become more widespread and competitive. Only thing I hate more than regular shopping is grocery shopping, I can't wait to be able to click a few buttons and have my groceries delivered to my front door.

Its already a thing here. Not just delivery from grocery stores, but also people who will go to stores (including specialty stores) to get your groceries for you.

Seems to be spiking almost as fast as home delivery from restaurants.
