A ton of students ? Sure, I’ll buy that. It’s 2000 lbs so about 15 students are wasting time and money going to college. I’d have said more but.....it’s more then reasonable.

You claim to be a science and math guy.
What's your love for people wasting their time taking general bullshit studies?

Math ability is nothing more than focus and training. Anyone within the 'normal' IQ range can be a math nerd. When we admire the math nerd (those of us who do .. and I include myself pointedly) we're not admiring the equations, we're admiring the specific kind of focus it takes to do them.

As regards numeracy underpinning all other learning, you're quite wrong. Literacy is the foundation skill - it even underpins numeracy (obviously, since math is a language). Literacy is the only mandatory subject in high school for that reason. But don't take my word for it - look it up. You'll find it's widely agreed upon.

Notice the Gov't and MSM does not address some of the basic questions of historical merit. History will address "why did the US go into Iraq" -not with platitudes and falsehoods but - what was the real reason. In general should our military branch of Gov't not be updating us on a regular basis with these particulars ? Why are we there - what is our objective, have we made progress in accomplishing this objective ? and lastly - some kind of coherent cost benefit analysis.

These are basic standard operating procedures that we at minimum should expect from Gov't.

Putting on the accountant hat for a moment - In 2000 - the Total military spend was roughly 300 Billion. During 8 years of Bush it went to over 900 Billion and under Obama over 1 Trillion.

Had we maintained 2000 spend level (increasing with inflation) - 5 x more than we needed to spend to defend the homeland - we could have diverted 500 Billion/yr x 16 years = 8 Trillion dollars to infrastructure - technology - ramping up our economy to compete in the 3rd millennium.

Instead we threw this money down the toilet fighting useless and unnecessary wars - to pad the pockets of the Establishment international financiers that own the Military Industrial Complex.

There is no army massing at our borders - no threat to the homeland of significant scale to justify such a spend - so the propaganda machine must create threats and instill fear into the minds of the raging masses - and not do the above cost analysis or burst any of the various "necessary illusions" that maintain the status quo.

Remember, intelligence is problem solving. And addiction is a problem unsolved. ALL bad habits are problems unsolved. It doesn't matter what you call them (addiction, poor choices, irresponsibility, etc), they remain unsolved problems.

Try looking at it another way. You meet two individuals at a dinner party. One is a twice divorced PhD in pure physics who drinks and smokes, has troubled relationships with his adult children, and lives alone in a rented apartment. The other is a motor mechanic who married his childhood sweetheart 30 years ago and is still married to her, he doesn't drink or smoke, and has a close and loving relationship with his adult children. He's been able to build the family holdings due to that stability, and now owns a nice family home, plus multiple investment properties (which will benefit his children enormously), and he's about to open more workshops in neighbouring towns.

How do you view them? Which is more intelligent?

Education does not increase intelligence - education increases knowledge, which is not the same thing at all. Knowledge might tell us the nature of a given problem, but it's intelligence that solves it.

Meantime, your list tells us very little. Check the starting salary for "gender studies" grad (assuming they could actually find work), compared to a newly qualified plumber.

Of course. Why would it be different for Trump? And what in heck does Trump have to do with it anyway?

I know some very successful minimum wage earners. It doens't matter what you earn, or how you earn it. It's what you do with it that indicates your intelligence.

And if you were serious about science, you would know that correlation does not equal causation.

EG: More poor people are obese, but obesity isn't a function of poverty. Both are actually a function of something else.

University graduates are remunerated primarily for their demonstrated ability to complete a task, when not employed directly in the specific field (in which case they are remunerated for knowledge). They are not paid for their 'intelligence'.

PS: 'learning how to think' is quite a different thing to 'applying knowledge', but both are life skills we acquire prior to the age of reason.

I never mentioned 'intelligence.' I mentioned critical thinking and systematically applying information. And, yes, learning critical thinking is a specific skill that isn't an automatic one. It has to be learned, and it is one of the primary benefits of college. Almost nobody learns to critically think before college.

The first guy is more than likely more intelligent. Intelligence doesn't mean the same as making good decisions and certainly not the same as being a good person. Intelligence is a measure of how quickly the mind can learn and manipulate data. I don't view intelligence as being a meaningful thing in and of itself. It's necessary for some jobs, but isn't sufficient for any--i.e. a certain amount of intelligence is necessary to become a medical doctor, but intelligence alone isn't enough to become a medical doctor.

That said, I would rather my sons turn out like the second guy than the first.

Most students aren't studying crappy things. The majority of students are in pre-health/science, business and engineering. It's one of those factoids that people claim. We hear a lot about the women's studies/gender identity, etc. type majors, but they are a very small minority at almost any campus. They just make twice as much noise as the rest of the students (who are busy studying practical things in order to get a job in the future).

You have a magic way of telling who the morons are. Are you psychic ? Amazing. Impressive. Unless of course, you are referring to the business majors.

I never said it did. You keep using the word, I don’t because I know what I don’t know. In the other hand, many conservatives think they know everything. That’s the antithesis of good science. I do know and can find easily, correlations. You might try being humble sometime.
Why don’t you define “causation” so we’ll know the context of what you’re asking.

I remember getting this one call at 1 am and the bottom apartment was splashing water out of her chandelier, I go up stairs and walk in and this drunk college girl is passed out with her bedroom sink running.

I guess you’re not a math person. Math IS a language. And no, not anyone can be a math nerd. The false narrative using so called average IQ is untrue........IQ has long been debunked as a generalized measurement of intelligence. Intelligence is specific and the only thing an IQ tests measures, is how well you did on an IQ test. It too is variable. Your comments indicate you’re just not a member of the community that deals in facts. There are no universities in the United States that use IQ tests for admission, the military doesn’t and literally, no one in their right mind. And no, aptitude tests don’t measure IQ. They measure skill sets needed to function in an academic environment....skill sets you can practice and improve upon.
Tell us your source for these non academic notions.
