Since when has the boss less money than the employee?

Merkel was invited by Putin. As chancellor of Germany she is also de facto leader of Europe. Putin want talk with her what to do.

Its well known that Trump and Merkel cant work with each other. What should they discuss? They know they disagree.

Yes I did. That was a fun one, but I did get water in my ear that gave me an ear infection.

I was stationed right across the bay on the North Island base.

Depending on the size of your damage control party and how much gear you have, you can attack all the compartments simultaneously if you've got the guys and stuff to do it.

The warship I was on had one main "Fire Department" of elite damage control specialists(about 50 guys), and then there were 4 damage control teams of lesser-trained by still highly-competent sailors(about 20 guys), and they each took a section of the ship during general quarters(battle conditions), with the Fire Department acting as a response force that would go wherever the damage was the worst or most-critically needing attention.

We used to have "mass conflagration" drills where all (simulated) hell was busting loose all over the ship, and you had multiple damage control teams going all over the ship attacking all manner of damage, fire, flooding, etc...

A simple dewatering and shoring(basically means "plugging the holes) issue like what happened on the Titanic would've be child's play for a US Navy damage control team. They probably would've started a few fires on purpose just to make it interesting.

Granted there is an executive pointing their course- but corporate news with large staffs and lawyers tend to hold some restraints that individuals do not. Look at posts here, and you find some who see the world through tunnel vision with a field of view that is microscopic, while others try to consider all the elements and their relevant importance in a discussion. Of course, there are such people everywhere.
I'm a skeptic, meaning that I doubt opinion, that I do so more or less depending on credibility of the person holding it, but in the end- on evidence supporting or denying it.

Just as a reference, Sobo should research how much damage a US fleet carrier took before sinking during WW2 and some of them made it back to the USA to be repaired and sent out again.
Just look at the Yorktown which was bombed badly during the Coral sea battle, went back to Pearl Harbor to be fixed quickly and then went back to help sink the four japanese carrier at Midway. Some of the civilian repair crews were still on board. That was a 19,800 tons pre-WW2 construction.

I was on the Chandler from '83 thru '85, and we had to moor at North Island because we had too deep a draft and couldn't get under the bridge to get to 32nd Street.

The wet trainer was a blast. The best part was when they'd flood the compartment above and you had to open the hatch and fight your way through the column of water coming down...

You assume we should not collude with one of our partner nations about what happenes?

Europe security can only exist when Germany and Russia talk with each other.

    The P-250 is your friend!

    What ship(s) were you on?

I remember doing those during REFTRA. Hated it. When I got back from the Gulf in '91 and got attached to ATGPAC and we got to run those drills for the crews. That was a bit more entertaining!

    LOL! Yeah, no doubt!

In regards to the Titanic, IIRC the real problem was "progressive flooding" I think it is called. That is as flooding continues it gets worse and worse and the ship sinks faster.

The Titanic's watertight bulkheads of its compartments did not extend much above the waterline. Thus when the 5th compartment started taking on water it pulled the tops of the watertight bulkheads of the compartments behind it below the water line and of course water started pouring into them as well.

IIRC on modern warships, the watertight bulkheads extend all the way from the keel to the superstructure so a progressive flooding situation like the Titanic's would be basically impossible.

I'm not sure why the armchair generals think that Iran's best shot at intentional retribution is naval warfare, but at any rate:

https://news.usni.org/2015/05/22/the-day-frigate-samuel-b-roberts-was-mined. As has been pointed out by people with direct knowledge, military vessels are not so easily sunk.

Iran is not going to directly engage a target that can fight back, especially not with such a limited chance of success. If they conduct any attack at all, it will be at a target and from a position that cannot immediately strike back. Whatever they do... just as they have done in the past...will preserve the ambiguity of responsibility until well after the attack is over. It will be a "protest," a "bombing" or a random portable rocket attack at something small. Nothing that will link directly to Iran until they choose to take credit for it.

No, I'm speaking of Europe. From Germany, one can easily travel throughout the EU.

The EU and the USA have very similar GDP, yet it's far easier to travel around the EU.

    By comparison, Texas is isolated.

And of course all of this angst is now rendered moot since Iran chose to do neither.

There is nothing about this that is moot.

For example, Iraq has stated that they want us out of Iraq - a new and more fervently held position than we've seen in the past, when the people were demonstrating against Iran, not the USA as they are now.

The airplane Iran shot down would undoubtedly NOT have been shot down without the serious increase in tension caused by Trump's attack. The plane was a regularly scheduled international flight with Iranians on board.

As evidenced by the mish mash of conflicting stories from the military, the administration and intel sources, there is every reason to have reduced faith in the abilities of this president. That is a serous impact. This is coming from statements by congressmen from both parties who are irate at the nonsense they got as a briefing.

Whatever is at the bottom of this assassination, it is consistent with the fact that this president doesn't make a move without calculating the political benefit to himself. The idea that the assassination was designed only for the benefit of America is seriously hard to swallow.

This isn't a "nothing to see, move on" moment. This has continuing consequences both here and abroad.

    Nonsense.

Their parliament, having representatives from ALL areas voted unanimously that all US military must leave Iraq.

Iraq has asked America for a plan for our departure.

They also point out that our military has broken our SOFA with Iraq in other ways.

I am sure the population as a whole isn't 100% on this.

But, those they voted into office are.

And, the Sunnis and Kurds are a minority population in Iraq.

I agree with that. However the Both the Kurds and the Sunnis trust the Shi'a about as far as you or I could throw the USS Missouri, and with good reason.
