Human nature. You know that for American soldiers even those repeatedly committed to direct intense combat the odds of them being injured much less killed are quite remote.

So they would have some skin in the game. So they would experience what they are approving. So our troops would feel supported. Those members of Congress could serve food, do laundry, and burn garbage behind the front lines and other odd jobs. That would be a helluva lot more useful than what they do in D.C. If they had to give a speech or cast a vote, we have technology that would allow them to do that from Afghanistan.

Doesn't it matter what one is fighting FOR?

I don't want people making vital life and death decisions to have "skin in the game". I want decisions made cold and logically by people able to analyze things without any emotional attachment or ties to the combat.

Of course it does but if you sign up you enter into a service. The key word is service.

Your reply sounds dangerously close to the testimony given by defendants at Nuremberg.

Ours is not to wonder why, ours is but to do, and die.

As one of the prosecutors at Nuremberg noted, "There comes a point when a man must refuse to answer to his leader if he is also to answer to his own conscience."

Must one surrender his conscience to the Borg when joining the service?

Being held to a higher moral standard IS a good thing. That you cant see that is disturbing.

Without discipline there is no military. If you disagree don't sign up.

Same in the U.S. and not limited to officers. JAG office conducts training on this.

    Oh sure, I certainly do.
Especially when you suffer defeat as a result of a lop-sided conflict
that leaves you living by the standard of the people who defeated you.

    So, surrender one's conscience.

I'm reminded of the statement of Herbert Spencer: When men hire themselves out to shoot other men to order, asking nothing about the justice of their cause, I don't care if they are shot themselves.

Naturally, there is a qualifier for just wars versus "the racket" described by Smedley Butler USMC.

You can't run a military without discipline. It is just that simple.

    I agree, discipline is necessary.

I am not advocating the elimination of discipline in the military or life in general.

I am advocating only for constitutional governance and moral leadership. We have neither right now.
