....by allowing cheap chinese goods back into the country?

I thought the whole point of this was to bolster domestic production?

Also Jim Kramer? Aw, I miss him without his sound effects board.

Maybe Democrat family members on the boards of Chinese companies making cheap goods, greased the skids for some fat pay backs?

Then why would Trump sign it?

Either it's good for the US or it isn't. Pick a lane man, c'mon. I know you have to do whatever necessary to make sure Trump is cast in the best light possible, but the mental gymnastics on this one is olympic level....

No Democrat running could have done that, or would even have tried.

Hmmm phase one alone has china purchasing 200b and has us slightly reducing tariffs with the threat that they can be added on if they don't come through on their end. We also leave another 250b in tariffs on until we get phase 2. It also handles phase one of technology transfers, which has never been done in any agreement with China and easy tensions. China is doing all the political and purchasing changes with the US doing little so anyone claiming it's not a clear US win is delusional and it's just the beginning. Finally somebody stands up to the economic thuggery China has been involved in, about damn TIME.

You stood up to China by agreeing to buy more goods from them?

I am all for standing up to Fascist China, but is becoming a bigger customer (and therefore more intertwined with them) standing up to them? I mean, one would think that the best way to side-line china is to get to a point where they aren't necessary to the US economy anymore. This just entrenches it further.

It's trump's deal. It would be wierd if he didn't back it. It will benefit America.

    It would be weird.

Though the benefits to America seem to be more cheap chinese goods thanks to this deal.

You can call that a win if you like.

    Ok I'm curious....

What's the end game of this? 100% Chinese goods?

We both know its beyond highly doubtful you are truly curious and don't know the end game of this especially since the goals Trump has laid out over and over again and your posts indicate you do try to keep up.

A massive reduction of US intellectual property being stolen by the Chinese and to reduce the trade advantage China has enjoyed under past presidents.

No president in 30 years has stood up to the Chinese. Clinton took their campaign money in exchange for our satellite technology for which he should have been tried for treason and shot. Bush allowed them to buy our supercomputers and Obama's weakness allowed China to expand into the ocean and steal even more intellectual property. The result has been massive theft of our private and military technology and a massive trade deficit.

Trump simply has the balls to take them on and end the bleeding.

By buying more cheap goods? I mean, I think we finally found a point where we actually agree that China is the biggest threat to Western democracies and Trump's vocal opposition to them has been one of the few bright spots to me.

But I can't imagine how allowing them more market access, to undercut domestic manufacturers for cheaper goods, helps America?

The IP issues aren't going to end because of a trade deal. I mean, I welcome the provisions but I don't trust them to actually tackle the issue in any meaningful way. In the Communist society that the fascist Chinese Govt has wrapped around itself, IP and creativity aren't rewarded in the same way as fast results do.

It's actually kind of interesting because that same culture is reflected in the massive proliferation of mobile game hacks, as winning and being on top tends to supersede fair play and winning through skill and effort.

I applaud the effort but don't believe this will be the path to the goal.

(And yes, sometimes I am simply curious as to where others are coming from. I do keep up but sometimes it is possible to put down the gauntlets and attempt for actual civil debate between opposing points of view)

Ok. Do you specifically mean the trade deficit specifically or is that a more overarching general view? If so, what constitutes "fair" trade?

Would I be to pessimistic if I said I don't think China is going to buy $200 billion more than 2017 over the next 2 years?

Did China win by having retaliatory tariffs on the US as well then?

It's important tor read the fine print. The deal is more than just AG products. One can play around with the numbers and come to whatever conclusion suits their position. This is the first deal that actually puts anything into a written agreement. If both sides abide to the spirit of the agreement, it could be worth more than $200 billion.

Here's a pretty good article from the farm side. Read the additional analysis at the end if nothing else.

My small business required me to pay tariffs of nearly $5,000, which I am busy marking up those products for the new year!

In trying to source other manufactures, I discovered every "domestic" producer turns out to be buying Chinese and just reselling it to me with considerable markup! Chinese are glad to sell it to me directly, just like Trump's family buys foreign products and labor to the USA.

    Trump's "business" is a joke.

The Chinese know Trump will be the POTUS for the next 5 years.

That’s why they finally signed the trade deal. They inherently understand the deal Trump offered them. Namely that a gradual phased draw down of their dependence on the US trade imbalance is better than going cold turkey. They understand that he is going to be re-elected so they opted for their best option. Part of something is better than all of nothing. Their wait and see approach regarding the election played out. They waited. They saw. They pulled the trigger.

Yeah, I like to keep it simple.
We exported 130 billion to them in 2017. I have a hard time believing we will do 230 billion this year.
    Maybe oil.
