My first real VR experience was on someone else's Samsung specialized headset for the Galaxy phone. I got to experience standing on the set of a Star Wars (I think it was a street scene in Rogue One). Horror stuff that felt like Poltergeist the movie. Roller Coasters. It was fantastic so I screwed up, bought a cheap set for myself and they really don't focus.

So, saw a sale for this https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Elec...g=wpcentralb-20&ascsubtag=UUwpUdUnU56585YYwYy $300. Back ordered and I don't get it till April.

Looks to be a ton of free stuff on Steam.EDIT: May not work with free Steam stuff. Just Vive and HTC. We'll see. Windows Store, ITMT, has a ton of stuff I think will work.

    Your thoughts and experiences?

certainly gives credence to 'the matrix' theories...

Ever read the Alan Moore run of Miracle Man? Influenced the Matrix VR stuff. While I bet Moore's Miracle Man was inspired by something else, dunno what.

Yep. Changed I think for the same reason that Captain Marvel is called, I think, Shazam, which is not who he is but the name of the Wizard the empowers him.

Miracle Man serves as a better name under Moore that mixes religious themes into his books. So, Shazam inspired Marvel Man but the VR stuff: I wonder what the earliest stories using the concept are and did Moore read them.

    ITMT: There was https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085271/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_108
I read a book around 1982 that I think inspired that movie but I cannot find it. Even within this list:
    https://uploadvr.com/list-50-scifi-books-featuring-ar-and-vr-tech/

In it they put a VR on say, a master pianist and it records the feeling of having his/her skill sets and the experience of playing the piano. Then you can buy the "tape" and relive the pianists experiences.

Me? I just want to be Batman.

One of my old colleagues started a company from his initial hobby research. It was in augmented reality, some glasses for factory worker training. He is really successful now, VR and by extension augmented reality is really booming.

The first time I experienced VR it was more than 10 years ago, there was this thing '7D Experience' in a beach resort, a VR montagne russe ride. Besides glasses and audio, you also wore a harness, and a man manually controlled your position. It was one of my most frightening experiences ever, my brain was tricked that I rode with 500KM per hour when I was sitting in the harness. I remember I was so shocked when I first 'fell' on the montagne russe ride, it was so fast and scary I entered some kind of brain fart and I didnt even had air or voice to scream, worst than any real montagne russe rides. After the experience, I knew VR will be part of humans future someday.

Agreed. The harness sounds interesting but full blown haptic suits that make your body sense impacts? It will be off the hook then.

VR has been a thing for well over 4 decades now. And it has been widely known to the general public for over 20 years.

And in al the decades, it has yet to really take off. It is still more of a novelty than a reality. Heck., 20 years ago Linden Labs was created, with the intention of creating VR hardware and worlds to use them in. And 16 years ago they launched Second Life. And really, that is about it.

Oh, 2 years ago they released Sansar to an Open Beta, and it has remained there ever since. With a user base and economy a fraction of the more traditional non-VR SL most consider Sansar to be mostly a flop.

Honestly, I question if VR will ever take off. Most of what it has been used for are really more novelty than anything else.

Travesty, because it would be really, REALLY awesome to be actually immersed into the VR world. Imagine living, feeling, breathing the character you're playing. You think we're gamers now? ****, it's a world devoid of taxes, politicians and all that stuff sign me up.

Right now on my second Oculus (the Rift S) because I used the first one so much it fell apart & I had it cobbled together w/ duct tape & bailing wire.

It's gotten to the point where I'm only interested in games I can play in VR & I'm not in least interested in anything that's not VR. My preference is for "Derail Valley" (there's a free version available) and "Elite Dangerous" is fabulous.

I may try out Resident Evil 7 for VR if I am sure I can get it to work. Steam game but I have a Windows mixed reality headset.

That name seems to be showing up a lot these days --as long as it has stereo vision and movable stereo audio the function should be the same. Price on the Rift S is $400 now but there are so many different oculus types now. VR has been destined for a spread to competition.

And pretty much universally, VT games are only fads.

I remember the rush when Fallout was released in VR. Lots of people bought it, and after playing for a few hours put it up. I have played Sansar, it is a cute gimmick. Played for a few hours, did a few things, then just put it up and have had absolutely no idea of ever playing it again.

And yea, I keep hearing about how "totally awesome" it is. As I said, it is nothing new, it has been around for decades. And other than porn and the novelty, nobody really uses it. No more than the Google Glass and other "wearables" that were such a craze a few years ago.

Or another craze, playing a game by waving your hands. Or moving around a stick in your hand. Nintendo has been trying to make this a"thing" for years (as have Microsoft and Sony), and they have all pretty much given up. Remember when the Wi was the talk of everybody? Now where is it, this "game system of the future"?

Quietly dying, as the company moved back to more traditional control systems for games.

Fads will always come and go, I have been watching them for decades. But the difference is that I see them as they are, fads. I laughed at VR when Lawnmower Man came out, and in the 1990s when VR lounges started appearing in malls. I laughed at it in the early 2000's when they were all the rage at InternetWorld, and even 2 decades later they are still just a fad.

Porn is the only place it has really taken off in.

Last year I bought an Oculus. The face your fears game really freaked me and the wife out when the floor gave away. The robot recall game was pretty cool and had us work up a sweat. It was blurry for me since my glasses wouldn't fit in the headset so I bought prescription inserts. My main problem is I haven't found a way to keep the inserts or eye pieces from fogging up. I've gone online for tips and used anti-fogging spray from my scuba diving days. Haven't used it much, don't have enough room in the house so I have to set it all up in the garage. The latest version doesn't have the external sensors which would make it much better not having all those connections and wires. I might upgrade to that some day.

    Real divers don't use sprays.

    Try spitting on them.

The new Half Life Virtual is getting some rave reviews. I can get it on Steam but not sure how well it will work on my Windows Mixed Reality. But, there is still potential in this thing. The positive feedback Half Life is getting gives me hope.
