What should US policy be towards Iran?

A perennial thorn in the side of the free world since 1979, a more implacable enemy even than the USSR although not such a powerful one. What should US policy be towards them?

 

Exactly what Trump is doing now.

Crush them with sanctions, punish their every aggression swiftly and soundly, keep them as contained as possible, and let them keep right on being the brutal, oppressive tinpot dictatorship they are. What do we care?

 

It might be time for regime change. Take out the top mullahs and let the people rule again. Once Iran stops exporting terrorism, the world will be a safer place again.

 

I say contain but respond disproportionately to their aggession.

They attack a tanker with boats? They lose all their boats and boat bases.

They attack anything with planes they lose their airforce..

 

How about just mind our own business for once?

 

From the Pahlavi dynasty with the current religious dictatorship which I think already solidify the majority of Iranian population is only through economic sanction, but we must convince the EU to enforce it with us which is of course the EU have a disagreement, a total regime change will not work it will create much chaos similar to Iraq.

The problem with minding our own business is that Iran would eventually take over the entire region, they literally and figuratively would enslave women. They would end up with nuclear weapons. We may not want to be the worlds police but if we aren't then who will be.? Does the world really want some religious islam nut jobs having nuclear weapons. MAD has kept fingers off the triggers but if you think that Allah would reward you for killing millions along with yourself then MAD means nothing.

 

Which is why we should develop systems to prevent missile incursion into the US. We are nearly bankrupt and do a poor job of playing world police — it’s time to stop.

That the US did what was necessary to prevent a commie takeover and now seeks to contain a theocratic dictatorship?

 

If everyone just live their lives and don't invade any country to gain control over their resources it will all be OK.
But they won't. They invade they kill they produce terorrism then they fight that terorrism. And they brainwash people that "look how good we are helping people against our terorrism".

Iran only poses a geopolitical threat because of our allies interests. So either change the allies interests or get Iran to side with U.S. allies. At the very least, don't fight with them in the region. Religious and military differences probably make changing Iran's interests the easier goal, so long as oil prices hold for now. Economic sanctions are good and all, but they don't necessarily work. The regime learns how to squeeze their population more dry, and they get a free excuse for more suffering in the overall public. Did Russia pull back from Crimea after sanctions? No. Cuba is still floating somehow despite decades of sanctions. The policy has to be working on peace in the region not through force. Let people have a taste of what they're missing out on and then watch the dominos begin to fall on their own. When the oil price drops, and it will drop one day, watch as Iran has to change to deal with everything.
