you understand the top 10% own 80% of the wealth outside of home ownership, they should pay 80% of the tax. Are you arguing different?
The top 10% do not pay 80% of the income taxes. They are the ones who benefited most from our society and the should pay more. To think that a guy who makes $15 an hour should pay income tax is ridiculous.
Income tax was never meant to be a a tax on all working Americans and it should never be.

Are you saying that the millionaires and billionaires get caught, are charged with evading taxes, and then the lawyers persuade the authorities not to prosecute?

So, concerning the rich: are they actually breaking the law and getting away with it, or is it just your opinion that they are cheating because they pay the minimum allowed within the law?

Every adult in the United States should pay tax. I suppose there could be extremely limited circumstances that would make one exempt. Every one of us should have some skin in the game. No freaking free rides, damn moochers!

everyone does pay taxes, excise taxes, gas taxes, SS and medicare taxes, sales taxes, import taxes, taxes that are built into the goods that they buy. Believe me everyone pays taxes.
But income taxes should be paid by those with the ability to do so. When the tax was implemented only 10% of the people in the country had to pay tax for first 20 years. To ask someone who makes $15 an hour to pay $70 to SS and medicare and another 100 a week for health insurance is nuts, and now you think they should pay income tax too!
say 20 bucks a week, you can take that away from 1 mill of them or ask 20 guys who make 1mill a year to pay 10% more a year.

Not only that, but they are the ones who write the tax codes.

Everyone should pay income tax. The current system creates a divide amongst the populace. Everyone should have a healthy suspicion of their government, instead, we end up with half the country dependent on government, and that is not good for society.

The primary purpose for the federal tax code is not to generate revenue for the federal government. The primary purpose for the federal tax code is to influence how what does not get taxed gets spent, saved, invested or given.
If you spend, save, invest or give your money in government approved ways, it is not taxed.
Unfortunately, the federal tax code cover only the slightest way by which we are taxed.

We are taxed in three ways. We are taxed by confiscation, monetization and regulation. Confiscation is what most people think of when they hear "tax". Monetization is a tax on money. When ever the fed produces more money, it devalues the money already in circulation. Regulation is, by far, the most expensive and the least progressive way by which we are taxed.

If we want the very wealthy to pay their fair share raise the capital gains taxes.

Increases in tax rates rarely translate into increases in tax revenues.
Increases in tax rates usually translate into decreases in taxable activity.

So the issue isn't the tax code, it is the lack of enforcement?

If cheating on taxes is stealing , then the financial situation of the individual doing the cheating is irrelevant. Ever not report your tips while working in the food industry?

Ever buy anything in a no sales tax state and bring it home without paying excise tax?

Rich people aren't the bad guys..

Where do you get your stats to support your claim of thousands of lives lost? What liberal social program have been impacted by your claim of rich people cheating on their taxes?

Since you don't seem to know what stealing is I will tell you. It is taking someone's property without their permission.

~ This sounds like a good idea. But how exactly ? :confuse: I always liked the idea of a flat tax - getting rid of part of the tax code. I like charitable contribution deductions and primary home residence deductions. I like certain business deductions to promote self-employment. Not sure about the rest ...

Most European countries at one time had a so called wealth tax but these laws had a negative impact and were repealed. This includes the Country that libs tout as a Socialist success story, Sweden - whose wealth tax was repealed in 2007.

it is not against the law to buy in one state and bring it into a tax state.

It's illegal for a Washington resident to buy something in Oregon (no sales tax) then bring it home and not pay the excise tax on it.. no different than a millionaire cheating on their taxes.

Can you give me an example of this? In Mass we can buy in new Hampshire with no sales tax and bring it into Mass with no issue at all. The exception being items that must be registered such as cars and boats, or items that that company delivers to another state which everyone can understand as that takes place as final delivery. does Washington give a rebate for a tax purchased in a higher tax state for the delta between the two sales tax states? I know some states have an additional tax called a use tax. but states are not allowed to apply sales tax to out of state purchases.

The U.S. Constitution grants the federal government the exclusive right to regulate – and tax – interstate trade. Because of this, states don't have the constitutional authority to collect sales taxes on items you purchase in another state. That doesn't mean that by purchasing your goods through mail-order catalogs you can dodge the tax man altogether. Nor does it mean that by driving to another state with a lower sales tax rate you can avoid your taxable duties either. Many states implement a use tax to avoid those schemes.

Sorry, it's called the "use tax" not an exise tax.
    https://dor.wa.gov/find-taxes-rates/use-tax

    When is use tax due?
    Use tax is due if:

    • Goods are purchased in another state that does not have a sales tax or a state with a sales tax lower than Washington’s. For example, items you purchase in Oregon that are used in Washington are subject to use tax.
