Someone identity frauded me. I'm out a nice chunk of change. The whole thing prompted me to go over my accounts (actually, the bookkeeper did it). We (she) found a number of parasites, on a number of accounts, that have been taking their drop of blood every month for who knows how long. I've learned that the only way to get rid of the parasites is to shed the account number like so much snake skin. I'll be reentering numbers into places like Amazon and the like for months to come. You never think that it's going to happen to you, until it does. I'm going up to Riser's for a Boston Lager. I need a beer.

I get my debit card frauded every year or so (but its thus far always been caught by the bank- say what you will about Chase being a big evil globalist Fed corruption machine [they are], but they're MFing terminator level when it comes to fraud detection...). I can't imagine my actual bank account getting hacked... suck! Sorry man.
What I find amazing is that the Creditors do seem interested in finding the criminals. My card got skimmed the last time I was in California. Wife was looking at the account and saw that there was an unusual charge on it. Someone rent an Airbnb on my card. Called them up and told them and they seem genuinely disinterested. Why not send the cops to the Airbnb and arrest someone?
I wish the federal government would get serious about hunting these people down and putting them in the toughest, hardest prison house they got to Angola for a minimum of ten years.
I have to be honest, looking back, I could have prevented most of this. I didn't stay up on things until someone stole a lot. The big chunk is one thing; I don't beat myself up for that so much. The little parasites that have been taking small amounts of money for God knows how long, those are the ones that are sticking in my craw.
I keep all my credit card receipts and check them against my credit card bills. I don't do automatic payment on my cards. I first encountered credit card fraud about 13 years ago but I only discovered it when I noticed I wasn't getting a bill. Someone had hacked my card and changed the address. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay for the fraudulent charges. The second time, about five years ago, I was notified by the credit card issuer that someone had put a fraudulent charge on my number. They cancelled the card and sent me a new one. Again, I lost nothing.
Ditto that. Tho it can be somewhat bothersome at times, agree to let the card issuer text you every time your card is debited.
There's so much tech fraud going on that most jurisdictions have a "secret" minimum amount that they'll pursue even if you can identify the perp. It can vary greatly.
Unless you got caught up in an organized multi-theft, big $ scam there's little they'll do about it. It's one reason interest rates on unpaid balances are so hi.
Well, they reimbursed me and told me that they would pursue it from here. Since they reimbursed me, I assumed they would do as they said, but what do I know. Gotta give it to Cap One though. They made me whole.
