    Hello,

I know this article doesn't come from an extremly trustworthy website, but I think it's still interesting to share :

The original source, the IFOP is quite trustworthy however.
The article is right on the fact that french people aren't extremly optimistic, maybe a side consequence of the explosion of criminality the 50 less years and large spread of atheism.

I'm not a big fan of Yves Cochet, and don't agree with everything that Aurélien Barrau says, but he is obviously quite a brillant man.

Will that mean the price of scrap metal will drop as the French take all their polluting cars to the scrapyard?
More chance of finding a condom machine in the Vatican.

Climate change going to bring about the end of the world in 20 years?

    That’s what these knuckleheads believe?

I bet they believe it was 100 years before it all ended prior to Trump getting in office.

Young people are more sensitive to the consequences of global warming and overconsumption, the survey showed.

We gotta ask ourselves what is global warming and is overconsumption? How much warm should it be? How much should we consume? Based on what criteria do these two exist?
You and I cannot have the answers, the scientists don't have them, sometimes politicians do.

Even if I am wrong, and this world doesn't support 100 billion people, this will not bring the end of human civilization. Not even 50C in the northern hemisphere during the winter season. Not even Europe was submerged in water. Not even 10.000 nukes detonated on Earth. Human civilization will go on in another form.

The French have a reputation for being pessimists and they obviously are: According to a recent survey conducted by Ifop for the Jean Jaurès Foundation, 65 percent of French people believe that civilization as we know it will collapse. And for a third of these people, this collapse will be brutal since it will happen within 20 years.

Nothing to add more, I believe its scaremongering to support a power agenda.

In recent years, the success of collapsology, a thesis disseminated in France by scientists like Aurélien Barrau or Yves Cochet, has been growing. Global warming, submersion of habitable land, depletion of resources are, according to them, phenomena leading, inevitably, to collapse and the end of the world.

I have spent a lot of my life in France, Paris mainly and a few time elsewhere, and I think its related to the place, sadly, being overrun, which might explain concerns about overpopulation, overconsumption, depletion of resources and the end of the world:)
Since then I live in a different country which had a massive pop decline, from ~26mil in 1990=> ~18mil now, standard for any European country without immigration and the resources definitely feel like more(housing, jobs, small things like room to walk the boulevard), and as usual, winters are still cold, summers hot, in the autumn the leaves fall... just like 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 years ago. So much for that warming that I really wished upon Central and East Europe...I like and miss palm trees

    Their civilization already collapsed.
Number of children per woman is less than 2, meaning civilization that stoped believing in the future and is in free fall.

We just went through the hottest January since we have been keeping weather records, about 2 degrees above normal on average. And a chunk of ice the size of Washington D.C.broke off the main ice sheet in the Antarctic and is now floating loose.

@Rugglestx No, not the end of the world, the end of the current civilization. Rome fell, Babylone fell, Technoticlan fell, the world still exist.

@ArchStanton Don't take it wrong, but Aurélien Barrau is surely smarter than you. I'm not saying you're dumb, just that it's likely he is smarter than you are. I don't appreciate that much him or Yves Cochet, but quite surely, you can't attack them on their intellect.
Furthermore, what's that "people who disagree with me are retarded" behavour ? You sound like a12 YO woke teenager.

@zer0lis The thesis go beyond the problem of climate changing.
It does take account of :
    _ Worldwide level of debt
_ Correlation between GDP and among of oil/fossile energies, correlation that doesn't know any exception, meaning that without fossile energies the GDP would collapse.
    _ Global warming
_ Problem like the drop of the quality of soils.
_ Other more anecdotic issues like growing resistance to antibiotics.

We could speak also of the fact that world population/GDP knew an exponantial growth, yet, reality don't like exponantial, and most exponantial end to be a gauss courb.
Are often just the first part of a Gauss courbe :
It's quite anecdotic as an argument, but interesting to consider.

The article is quite poor in arguments, there is more developped video :

I don't like the adding of music and over emotionnal tone, I think it does weaken the argument.

@free man I would agree, yet France stay among the highest rate of birth of Europe. However, american birth rate is following the same path. Considering the french culture, yes, it collapsed during the 20th century into nihilistic post-modernism.
It's maybe a side effect of high density of population areas, countries like Japan/South Korea know huge problem at that level, the same can be said with germany that is more populated than France, especially considering that Germany is smaller.
It's interesting to know that during the experience "Mouse Utopia" made by a scientist named Calhoun, where he gave the best conditions to some mice like unlimited food, no sickness, and that ended with psychologically unstable mouses and a collapse of the population.

I wouldn't call it a collapse of civilization since the break down of anything civilized has been going on for quite some time now. I foresee a renewal of civilization by those who survive the economic break down; the geological upheavals; the terrorists attacks and the nuclear war.

The Apocalypse began in 2012 with the war in Syria. The worse is yet to come.

The French, like Americans, are influenced by the media they read. I suspect most of the French media is anti-American. When I visited France back in the late 1960's, things were pretty anti-American back then as well. Ignore it.

The collapse has already started, we see that in the Mideast and we're starting to see it in the global South. We'll start seeing it in more developed parts of the world over the next 1-2 decades with total systems collapse within 50-100 years (sooner if WW3 ever happens). It won't be the end of humanity but it'll be something human civilization hasn't experienced in about 1,000 years. Worse, there'll be little hope of a return to industrial society once civilization is rebooted becuase we've used up too many key resources.

No, since there will be hardly anybody left to collect the scrap, let alone personnel for the steel factories to recycle it. :bye:

The ice melting in parts of Antarctica has to do with volcanism. They are becoming active. It does happen you know? The ice is melting underneath Greenland as well, probably for the same reason. It's only logical that the oceans are heating up for the same reasons, since they do contain millions of volcanoes.

I read an article on the latest report yesterday the melting ice could actually cause western Europe to cool... so much for warming. They don't know wtf is going on, is it getting warmer or colder
The earth btw has a natural climate cycle that have changed over millions of years, scientists have studied it for 50 years and freak out because it's changing... part of thousands of years cycle  .... very interesting though is how the ocean currents manage our climate, the Beaufort Gyre and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

Melting ice floods the Arctic with fresh water, and it may cool Europe

We are already in a mass species extinction event, the 6th of such events in the planet's history. It's just happening too slowly for most to notice Yet in geological time, this one is happening much faster than most.

The planet will still be here and maybe even human civilization in some form but change is inevitable.

The greatest threats are environmental degradation including climate change, overpopulation, loss of habitat and nuclear war.

We have innovated our way out of trouble before. The question is, can we do it this time?

Young people are depressed about the kind of world they are going to inherit not just in France.

People have been predicting the end since the beginning. Guess at some point they will be right, but it will not be in 20 years from today. But the left does love their doom & gloom, fear is a bit part of their package they sell to push their agenada.

The 12 years or 20 years often being quoted is not the time to the end of the world but the time we have to keep warming under a certain threshold.

And it is an estimation. We are already doing nothing about controlling CO2 emissions in most cases. This was an attempt by the IPCC to get some movement.

Hey I just had a great idea

Let's use Climate Change to topple governments, then corrupt the new governments and steal all the public funds!! Oh wait... that one is already taken

I don't think our problem is climate change. I think its world overpopulation. Something will have to give in a generation or two.

"And for a third of these people, this collapse will be brutal since it will happen within 20 years."

I understand what you are saying but the OP contained typical young liberal hysteria. They honestly think they will not see 50 years old because of all the fear ideology they are feed since childhood and on social media to try and make them dependent on govt to save them.

And we are doing things to control emissions. Some say not enough, that is a worthy debate. But to say we are doing nothing is incorrect. In most cases we are indeed doing things to lower them.
