    This is completely incorrect.

After the GOP slaughtered the Democrats in the 1994 midterm elections by winning 55 seats, Newt Gingrich and the GOP created the Contract With America and Bill "Bubba" Clinton had no choice but to go along with it.

I sure blame the GOP Congress for putting it back into debt. Don't you?

They do when they have good leadership with a man who sincerely wants to reduce government spending, like Gingrich.

I told people during Trump's 2016 campaign that he's not a small government guy. Trump may have views and opinions which at times line up with the views and concerns of constitutionalists, but at his core, he's always held unto his Democrat roots and been a big government solutions type of person. just look at his recent words and actions, if you don'r believe me.

If people expect Trump to be a constitutional conservative, they will be let down. I think he does believe it would be nice to reduce wasteful and reckless federal spending, like many politicians do. but reducing federal spending is not something that truly motivates him.

You have been misled to believe that. I lived thru those years so i know how it all came down. Did you read your history from a book?

The GOP controlled congress the last six years of the Clinton Administration and we ended up with a surplus.

Even GW Bush kept the deficit down until the dems took over the Congress. Then Obama punched the throttle to the floor and we have never been able to get a hold of this new era of runaway, trillion dollar deficit spending.

The bottom line as to why the budget was balanced in the late 1990s was as follows:

    1) The Republican Congress prevented the Clinton Admin. from embarking on any major new spending.
    2) The Clinton Admin. prevented the Republican Congress from cutting taxes.
    3) Defense spending was kept basically flat for years (with a corresponding reduction in U.S. forces and readiness but that's another argument).
    4) Increased revenues from the growing economy eliminated the deficit.

None of these factors were maintainable for much longer than 2001 for obvious reasons.

#4 was mainly from the dot com boom in the mid to late 90's.

Which is why I pointed out that the situation was not maintainable. Also, for the U.S. economy there was a massive recession across almost a third of the world mainly in Asia which depressed oil prices and thus gasoline prices in the U.S. in the 1990s. Never underestimate the potential impact of lower fuel prices to the U.S. economy.

You have been led to misbelieve that, and you have no idea how it all came about. The debt and deficit grew under Bush because of the war and the recession. Stop right now the falsehoods you try to spread; you fail.

I was referring to your incorrect comment that it was "Clinton who forced the GOP Congress to" balance the budget.

Clinton did force the GOP to balance the budget.

It would not have happened otherwise.

And how did Clinton do that when his administration did not even forecast balanced budgets?

    Just the opposite.

The GOP house forced Clinton to balance the budget.
