It also doesn't mean it's correct.

Right now all we have is a guess or a hunch. Remember this particular contagion has a history less than 6 months old we really don't know much of anything beyond the fact that most if not all the dead are elderly with pre existing conditions.

It's pretty appalling. This man claims to be an authority on every single topic. He knows more than the generals, he knows more than the medical experts, he knows more than NOAA. I had no idea one person could be the world's leading expert on every single topic known to man.

Well, it's probably correct in that it is literally the ratio of the number of confirmed cases and the number of reported deaths, which is what the WHO said it was. There's obviously much more than that figure alone to discuss, including the accuracy of the various statistics in a fast-moving world-wide issue (and it was just one element of a long press conference). It remains wrong for Trump to have called it "fake", especially without given any justification for that claim.

Given most of that is based on reporting from China, and that they benefit from damage to the US economy, how far are you prepared to trust their data?

What are you talking about? It's an international organisation reporting world-wide figures and presenting them to an international audience. I doubt most Americans would have even heard the figure if Trump hadn't attacked it in the first place. Not everything has to be about you.

Anyway, I don't see how artificially inflating this figure would damage the US economy any more than any other. If they inflated Chinese figures, it could damage them more and make death rates elsewhere, including the US, actually look better.

Are you daft? It is an international organization to be sure but 90 percent of the info comes from China. Like it or not that's where most of the cases have occurred and it is their data that makes up the bulk of the WHO report.

Maybe a little bit premature to celebrate and hail Trump. We'll know more in a few weeks.

In the meantime, Washington State has a full, uncontrolled outbreak. 5% of tests came back positive, most of these people never traveled or knew anyone who traveled to China. And most people are still being told to go home and rest because nobody has any text kits. This is not looking good.

Trump is right. The coronavirus is just a Progressive/Liberal hoax.

I encourage all Conservatives to hang out in Wuhan, China and Rome, since the virus is a hoax. Surely they won't get sick.

That doesn't explain why anyone would have a reason to inflate the mortality rate figures from China. If anything they'd want to do the opposite.

Yeah, his hunch about the low mortality rate all of a sudden hit reality when he was scheduled for a photo op at the CDC while one of their workers was tested for covid. He almost canceled the photo op, until the test came back negative. He is not so tough after all.

Of course, wearing his KAG campaign hat to the CDC visit is another form of poor judgement.

I think that is true, but we do have some clues from the Princess Cruise ship that was quarantined in Japan.

More than half of those testing positive to the virus were asymptomatic, meaning they had no symptoms. We can assume IF those numbers are consistant with the real world there a great number of folks walking around and going to work oblivious to the fact they are infected with the virus, as they have no symptoms. Searching for those people through testing would only have value under a quarantine situation.

    https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/6/20-0452_article

[By February 28, a total of 705 COVID-19 cases were confirmed among 4,061 passengers and crew tested; 392 cases were asymptomatic, 36 persons were admitted to intensive care units, and 6 patients died (2). All case-patients from the ship were transferred to designated medical institutions in Japan (3).]

While Trump was visiting tornado-ravaged Tennessee and the CDC today, CNN and Fox largely ignored him and dealt with the covid-19 outbreak, the primaries, and, later, Pence's press conference with his medical experts in toe to provide Americans with accurate information and the latest update.

Trump got a couple of minutes of air time and he blew that. He spent most of those minutes exaggerating the importance of the U.S. as compared to other countries. He made the astonishing statement that the U.S. is the only country being proactive in the search for covid-19 victims and its cure.

The incredible stupidity of this President is sometimes overwhelming. Of course, that is a huge lie. China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, and countless other nations are actively searching for victims of this virus and a cure.

Why did Trump make such an outrageous lie? Part of the answer is, that is what he does. Lying to benefit himself is a part of his DNA. Quite frankly, he can't help himself.

The other part of the answer is Trump's explanation of truthful hyperbole.

“The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration—and a very effective form of promotion.” “I Call It Truthful Hyperbole”: The Most Popular Quotes From Trump’s “

    Boy, that explains a lot.

Foremost to control the spread the authorities should who's infected and who aren't for isolation and containment, this procedure should be followed otherwise the outbreak would likely become a pandemic.

That really does explain a lot. In a weird way, it makes him seem less like a bat **** loon and more like a generic ole' con man.

Probably be awhile before we get relevant stats. So nothing wrong with feeling a hunch. At least until later on in the pandemic.

Yeah, and when we get the stats, they'll magically match Trump's "hunch", after he puts pressure on an official from the CDC who puts together the stats. If they don't match Trump's "hunch" the official will be magically fired. It happened to the NOAA when the hurricane forecast was "wrong", it will happen again. Truly, the alternative facts presidency.
