Health and Human Services, part of the federal govt, i.e. people who want to make Trump feel better.

Figures are inflated because not everybody with mild symptoms seeks medical attention or is tested.

but many more will need medical attention, overwhelming the medical community is a concern, which is why they want to slow the spread, no one thinks it can be stopped, just spread out over more time

    The snowflakes are melting.

Nobody likes being sick, but it’s better than losing your income, your savings, your house, your future. What’s the point in spending millions to save one life if you destroy millions more in doing so.

I have a friend who will probably lose his family’s home as his wife had to quit her job to stay home with her two boys, who are now prohibited from going to school—not because they might get sick and die, but because the elderly might get sick and die. How many millions of times will that be repeated across the nation?

Canceling life will not stop the sick from ailing, nor the dead from dying, but it will destroy the financial stability of millions leading to foreclosures, suicides, and unemployment. And if taken to its logical conclusion will end the free market, private healthcare, and individual rights. It has the potential to create dictatorship.

Be careful of what you fear.

Current case fatality rate of COVID-19 is about 2-4%. Most of the doctors I have seen and those I know socially say the smart money is on it ending up around 1% as testing improves. The seasonal flu case fatality rate much lower - 0.1%, but occurs to varying degrees every year.

From a human psychology perspective, I think coronavirus being a new outbreak rather than a seasonal occurance makes it seem worse and is driving a lot of the panic.

This is true. They are trying to flatten the curve to prevent hospital overload as what happened in China, Iran, and Italy. But at what cost to the economy and liberty? What good will it do if it triggers a Great Depression with rising unemployment, suicides, bankruptcies, divorces, abortions, and increases America’s slide toward tyranny?

We will have a better fix on it next year if it is still with us or returns. It would be nice to see the hysteria wind down a bit.

Italy has a 7% mortality rate at the moment, and it's higher than that because you don't drop dead as soon as you get this. It takes 7-10 days for a person to get really ill and die. To get a true comparison, you take the number of infected from a week ago, and the current number of deaths. That would make Italy's mortality rate over 10%.

Now, let's say Italy is undercounting cases by an order of magnitude (factor of ten). That would STILL make it ten times more lethal than the flu, and also HIGHLY contagious. Let's say Italy is undercounting cases by a factor of 100. That would make it AS LETHAL as the flu and so contagious that everyone is going to get it, instead of the usual 10%.

There's no plausible scenario that has this either going away quickly or not killing a bunch of people. It's either going to infect a ****-ton of people, and be like the flu, or infect a lot of people and be much worse than the flu.

But even that's not the real problem. The real problem are the percent who get sick and need hospital care. It's about 15%. Italy is being overwhelmed and is doing triage. Europe is about two weeks behind. We're about two weeks behind them.

Perhaps it might be wise to stop the police from interacting with public by suspending ticket writing for 30 days? For the officer’s safety, of course.

Fine, but honestly the WHO have NOT been leading on the Coronavirus, instead we have seen leaders in the west like Trump, Johnson and Scott Morrison several steps ahead of the WHO on the coronavirus

The UK is bad enough but no one has been worse informed over this than the US. No one has been less prepared than the US. You will find that the death rate of known people infected by the virus has gone up. Three of four days ago it was 6%. Now it is 8%

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Of course if countries acted like the WHO asks and tested people with similar illness for the virus and then went on and found their contacts rather than leaving them to infect others we might have an idea about the number infected. In the meantime guilty countries just try propaganda.

The West is not looking after its people like China did - even if somewhat OTT to begin with, they did the job. It is estimated that if they had not acted like they did, rather than just over 80,000 infected, they would have had seven and a half million.

Not taking the actions China took and taking them fast, the West looks like it may be hit a lot harder - and indeed not helping each other when needed. Italy is part of the EU but it is China who has been helping them in their hour of need. Today Italy reported 368 deaths for the past 24 hours. That is more than ever was reported from Wuham.

Very good points, just one thing I think is a bit different. People only get so ill that they want to go to hospital in the second or third week. After that, during the next three to six weeks, three being more usual they either get better or die. There are a lot of people in hospital unrecovered for a long time.

It isn't hysteria. It is because we do not know what is happening but it does appear to be something which is going to have a drastic change on how we live.

I'd say it was more concerning to be in denial over it. Such people are likely to not look after themselves and loved ones.

Here is another thing we ought to be pondering on when we consider that the people dying are only old and vulnerable so who cares if they die. I am pretty sure I heard someone in Italy saying they were just leaving the over 65's to die. Even if I misheard him that is what people are talking about. They will need to make choices as to who to save. I heard about someone in their twenties arriving very ill. They said he was then the Number 1 patient. It is not impossible that this thing of the older you are the more likely you are to die, is due to the choice of who to give limited resources to. The older you are, the less likely you are to get them if they are scarce. Germany in case people have not noticed so far done an amazing job of keeping people alive Almost 6,000 infected and only 11 dead. No other country is near that. I hear Germany has 4 times the Respirators we, the UK, have. Out heath minister is asking people to give up what they usually make and get them ready and they will buy all of them. In the mean time they are telling oldies to self isolate - or they are saying they are going to say that.

It’s interesting that people downplay the importance of this virus-“it affects older people”.

who do they think controls money and finance, government, the law and law enforcement, armed forces, health services, the churches, etc, etc.
    Older people, no?

What effect would the deaths of say, 30% of this class of influential old men and women have on our society?

Good to see the doom & gloom crowd is still at it on here, I'm surprised they can still post from deep within their bunkers of doom!

All we need now is bell ringers wandering the street yelling "Bring out your dead!"
