Why would you want to get multiple platforms up close where the Chinese rockets would have no problem destroying them? We have rockets that can drop a package on Xi's toilet after being launched from 1600 PA. The newest one is just being tested.

I wonder how many US Navy missiles have the precise coordinates of Fiery Cross Reef programmed into their guidance computer, and how many seconds after a hot war starts before the entire "island" is reduced to a pile of rubble - I bet the answers are some variant of "a lot" and "not many", respectively. Having knowledge of the ships that pass by is not the same thing as exerting effective control over the South China Sea. The very fact that they're merely observing as US Navy warships sail all through what they want to pretend is their territory should make that abundantly clear.
