Six inches, six feet, six miles away, you can still get Covid-19. This isn't like the last thread addressing the unnecessary panic.

Few times in American history show itself where we face a choice of being the blind sheep, or be the rebel that challenges the system. Rosa Parks is a example. While the entire idea of social distancing is a farce, and gets beaten more than a dead horse, this is not a time to put the brakes on our lives. The government does, however, want us to be blind sheep. Thus why these "stay at home" orders are issued by governors scrambling for control. There's nothing obligatory about them. You can go to work, you'll just be doing your job in an empty building because you were working in a barn crowded with blind sheep.

Rising and demonstrating life can continue during these times, which state governments are condemning by the way, is the obligation. Take a hike, go to the park, hell even host a pool party since its warming up in the country, we are called to resist the stay at home orders for a cause. The cause of empowering others, to think for themselves, boost their immune systems, I don't care if you're 16 or 96, we as Americans are obligated to say no to our governors, show they are being ridiculous coast to coast,, what I am describing here is necessary anarchy.

Much of this Coronavirus hooplah is a joke anyway, why take this anymore seriously?

I've sworn to rise to the occasion, will you? Who knows when another time in American history like this will present itself.

You should go to Iran and lick some shrines. Or just go lick some banister rails at a mall and maybe some windows. Go show everyone just how stupid they are. You go gurl. Yay you, you rebel you.

Social distancing and isolation certainly does work. It is proven to work. This is a highly contagious virus and far deadlier than something like the Swine Flu - perhaps 170 times deadlier.

Get a grip on reality. This is real and medical experts are giving us the best information available. By ignoring those guidelines, you not only put yourself at risk, but everyone around you as well.

Arrogance is not justification for risking other people's lives.

More than half a million confirmed cases, close to 25k dead. Nah, think I'll stay in and stay comfy for now.

BTW, I guess we (U.S.) now lead in cases.

And it shoots my happy theory that the "peak" could be 80,000 cases out of the window.(even China's reporting 'more' cases, though they're claiming it's from people returning to their mainland.).

I think doubling that to 160,000 would now be a very conservative estimate and could possibly be higher. *Gulp*. Yeah, as much as I care about our civil liberties and freedom, if you die you won't have any of those anyway.

Shut down isn't the best response. Better imo would be gov't provided masks and the temporary authority (authorized through congress) to compulse wearing them (ticketable offense) since infection is predominantly airborne.

While shut downs are both demonstrably and logically effective at slowing infection, ruining our economy isn't a good solution

I might be okay with that, for myself, if I was guaranteed a supply of fresh masks... and form fitting safety glasses, since apparently it can be transmitted through any mucus membrane.

A bit if humor - when searching "can coronavirus be transmitted through...", "farts" was one of the results.

Earlier this morning I heard a nurse (maybe a doctor) being remotely interviewed describing the scene in her hospital. I think it may have been Elmhurst in NY, but I'm not sure.

The part that caught my attention was her description of the Covid 19 patients as they die. They wake up confused and gasping for air, and even though they are on oxygen, they can't breathe because of the shortage of ventilators. She described it as watching a "zombie". She actually used that word.

You will be hearing more descriptions from the front line caregivers like this, so at the very least, stay the fuch home!

USA has many people,, and of course, many stubborn ones.

Forget about the U.S having a history. This is a real joke! So the new land should be careful like the old world, otherwise you will all die, like the 300 m Indians that your forefathers killed by smallpox

I would support funneling public money into the production of insane quantities of masks/goggles to this purpose as an alternative to just shutting everything down.

I would imagine it can be transmitted through farts, given that it is confirmed to be transmitted through feces.

I'd like to tell you to go have yourself a touch everything you see party, but I know that people on the front lines have to be subjected to people like you, and they are already at high risk.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

COVID can live longer on an elevator button, doorknob or other such surface (including food packaging) than it can stay in the air - by a LOT.

But, I agree that masks would be a big plus - first supplying hospitals, though.

I remember when this all started to unfold, reports were saying that it's primarily transmitted through coughing and sneezing... yet a mask wouldn't help much...

There wasn't much talk at all about surfaces, other than we should avoid touching our faces. I became OCD about hand washing and cleaning surfaces anyways.

    Amen.

There is a LOT we could do if we had a federal level response - something governors have been asking for.

If you choose to get sick are you then going to go to a hospital and risk the lives of our doctors and nurses?

Amen. (Though there are Christians who believe that personal religious beliefs trump that oath.)

I'm just thinking that if he chooses to get sick he should also choose not to use our hospitals and put our healthcare workers at risk while taking a bed and supplies.

But so far as I know it does not infect from getting on the skin. If ppl are wearing masks/goggles, it will reduce the unconscious tendency to touch the face, which is largely how the virus gets from doorknob to inside us.

And yes, masks go to HCPs first. But think of how many masks we could make/buy if we didn't have to send everyone an extra $600/wk of unemployment and bail out their employers.

Hell, we could then become the world supplier for medical masks/goggles when all this over.

If you pick up a virus on your clothing, hands, or whatever, it can be transferred to other objects in your home where it can survive for quite a long time. If you unload the dish washer, eat some spilled cheerios, or whatever, it could find a way in.

Congress gave the administration $2TRILLION dollars. That's enough for 8,000,000 homes costing $250,000 each. Plus, the economic benefit of that much employment. That would mean your state could have 80,000 homes costing that much - OR the money divided some other way.

Masks and ventilators don't cost that much. And, Boris Johnson in UK found companies willing to VOLUNTEER to make such equipment - with ventilator parts made by different companies and then assembled!

What we have needed is leadership.

A ventilator can cost as much as $34,000 to $40,000. I managed a home respiratory company and had several patients that lived at home that were ventilator dependent. We also employed 2 respiratory therapists who followed up with these patients. A ventilator is a very complex piece of equipment. It's not like any factory can simple re-tool and start pumping them out like cookies. Many doctors may not have a strong understanding of the basics. Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Physicians need to have a firm grasp of the basic concepts of mechanical ventilation because without it, they can do serious harm to their patients.

There's three types of mechanical ventilation. Controlled breaths are completely “controlled” by the ventilator. Assisted breaths come at a set time interval, assisted breaths will be delivered to that patient if they attempt to trigger a breath. Supported spontaneous breaths are breaths that are triggered by patient effort (like assisted breaths), but once triggered the ventilator will give that person some support, but not full support like an assisted breath.

There's so many things factored into mechanical ventilation such as volume, pressure, resistance, peak pressures, lung effusions, etc. It's mind boggling how complex it is to keep anyone alive on mechanical ventilation. One other thing, most people put on mechanical ventilation after surgery, or after an acute lung injury. Most people remain on ventilation for 3 days. With Covid-19, it's necessary to keep patients on ventilators for 20 to 31 days. That's why there's such a critical shortage.

Where would a GM or Elon Musk come up with a design for mechanical ventilators? Maybe they could come up with a design but this isn't like hooking up some air conditioning to some tubes and even with computer assisted design tools, this would not be a trivial undertaking. The most practical solution would be to license a design from one of the existing manufacturers, assuming that they could find one who was willing. There are several manufacturers of ventilators in the US.

As a medical professional and former manager of a home respiratory company, it has crossed my mind many times as to whether using CPAP could be used to mechanically ventilate a patient with oxygen bled into the CPAP mask. I'm not sure that the maximum pressure settings on a CPAP which is 20 to 25 cm/H2O and this rating is too high for most people but would it be adequate for mechanical ventilation? I just don't know.

CPAPs, and BIPAPs won't do the jobs, not for ARDs patients. Not enough horsepower.

I'm the vent guy, and these are my babies...

Damn near $50,000 for that sexy beast.

These work as ventilators too. I've got 20 of my elite gladiators ready for battle, and there's a Lamborghini sticker price on those beauties.

    Great job!!! Thanks!

Here's an articl on Dyson and Airbus close to "go" on making ventilators, but not in America:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...k-green-light-produce-ventilators-coronavirus

Here's a case of the military helping to make ventilators, but not in America:
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-ventilators-insigh/army-join

Here's an article concerning car makers moving to ventilators, something American auto and autoworkers want to do:
    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-51956880

Here's a US ventilator company asking for government assistance in distributing ventilators to where they are needed - something that US governors have requested, but the administration has denied, tellinng govrnors that they need to do their own sourcing - which has turned into governors bidding against each other:
