US Congressman Mike Kelly (R, PA-03) has tested postive for the COVID-19 virus. He will be 72 in May.

He is the 5th US Congressman to test positive.

Listening to Gov. Cuomo's daily briefing. The federal government sent 4,000 ventilators, which they are not using yet. Cuomo is trying to procure 26,000 more as he thinks he needs 30,000. He said the price went from $25,000 each before the virus to $45,000 today because everyone is trying to buy them at one time. He is also trying to increase the total number of beds in the state (by 3x) to 140,000.

He thanked the White House for invoking the Defense Production Act to make GM manufacture more ventilators.

The state is in good shape today. Cuomo is planning for "the war" to start in 14 to 21 days, so he's doing everything he can to get supplies he thinks he needs before "the apex" starts in 2-3 weeks.

1,100 patient test started on the hydroquinine (? I know that's not the right word) with the antibiotic.

Naval vessel Comfort will arrive Monday to take the pressure off the hospital. 1000 extra beds.

Cuomo spoke with Trump this morning. Trump approved 4 new sites to convert to emergency medical facility use. Adds 4000 beds, and there is one site in every borough in NYC.

Thousands of additional beds have been found and approved.

They will shift to make Covid-only hospitals to keep virus patients separate from everyone else.

Cuomo hopes that "the apex", or the war, doesn't happen but feels they will be prepared.

FDA has given New York approval to start antibody tests. They've already started.

Daily ICU admissions, the critical point, (people who need ventilators) went down to 172 over the last day, from 374 the previous day. Hospitalizations also dropped. But don't put too much stock in one day.

Worst news: 728 new deaths. People are on ventilators longer. The longer on a vent the less chance of recovery. It's becoming more dramatic with people being on vents for longer and longer and those are the people we're losing. Most had other complicating health issues.

I didn't think there was an antibody test yet that is reliable. Do you have any more information on this?
Edit found a site that says 98% reliable

This is the other, very unseemly side of COVID-19:

    https://fox4kc.com/news/fbi-says-ma...ay-in-belton-was-domestic-terror-suspect/amp/

a white supremacist pos was shot dead by the FBI in Missouri as he was planning to blow up a hospital because he was mad as hell because the mayor issued a shelter in place order. The man had a record of planning violence against black people, muslims and jews. Apparently, the FBI acted very quickly. Good for the FBI. With innocent people dying of COVID-19, this crap is one thing the world does not need.

I was typing while listening to Cuomo....essentially taking dictation. The replay of the press briefing is what I'm listening to. I didn't hear more than that Cuomo said that New York got permission to do antibody tests and that they are doing them.

That probably belongs on one of the dozens of political Covid threads, but this is your thread, and I'll always defend peoples' right to free speech, even if they're off topic.

Cuomo is doing the right thing by correctly estimating how many ventilators NY will need in order to survive the wave that is to come. Just because a couple of thousand are not needed today doesn't mean they won't be 15,000 short by next weekend. He is working on a numbers driven basis, which is very, very smart.

The med-ship on the way is an outstanding idea. Good for Trump for doing this, it is the right thing to do.

Anti-body tests are absolutely the way to go.

Yes, he is doing the right thing to grab as many vents and beds as he thinks he will need.

Let's hope doesn't need all of them, and will look more like a toilet paper hoarder if the virus were to miraculously burn out and not get to the apex that's predicted. No one would blame him for having a few extra rolls, but they would if he runs out. ;)

As you all are obviously noticing, hotspots are suddenly appearing all over the USA, most notably close to major airport hubs:

    1.) Atlanta
    2.) New Orleans
    3.) Miami
    4.) Chicago
    5.) Los Angeles
    6.) Dallas
    7.) Philadelphia

    Already hot:

    6.) Seattle
    7.) NYC

Bound to be extremely hot soon:

    8.) Detroit / Flint
    9.) Cincinnatti
    10.) Kitty Hawk (NC)
    11.) San Francisco
    12.) Kansas City
    13.) Dayton (Oh)
    14.) Phoenix

    Just for a start.

    Major counties to watch:

    1.) Cuyahoga, Summit (OH)
2.) Montgomery (both OH and MD)
3.) all collar counties outside of Chicago
4.) all counties in the I-94 corridor in Florida
5.) all collar counties outside of Philly
6.) all collar counties outside of Boston

This list is going to grow exponentially in the next 4 days, maybe only in 3.

If he is wrong, I will gladly forgive him, for the ventilators are going to be needed elsewhere as well, and fast.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe is declaring a national emergency for all of Niho (Japan) because of COVID-19.
He is planning to close the Japan to air and boat travel.

This is a developing story, right at this moment.

Thank you for the kind words.

I will start monitoring Turkey as it does look indeed like quickly rising hotspot (first case on Mar 9th, yeah right). Israel though I am not as confident on. Granted I am not following what actions each individual nation is taking, but their case to death total tells me they are probably being more diligent about actually testing for the thing vs an Indonesia which obviously just is not. I added it for now, but I also had been tracking Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Austria when each hit 1,000 cases. None of them have become real hotspots yet - probably they were just more ahead on testing than other nations were at the time.

I suspect Portugal, Indonesia, Brazil, and the Philippines may become hotspots sooner as they have each have an outsized number of deaths per day relative to peers with similar total case #'s. At least just my suspicion by eyeballing things.

Yes. About a week ago, Cuomo said that New York should have first priority on purchasing ventilators, since they were the biggest hot spot. He didn't think he should have to compete with other states, and said that as soon as the crisis died down in New York, he would be happy to send extra ventilators to whichever state was the hot spot at the time that New York was finished. He's definitively doing everything he can do to be the New York State version of America First. He's looking out for his own people. New Yorkers should be happy to have a fighter like him.

I think Cuomo is doing a great job for the people of New York. You want a governor who will look out for your state's needs first, just like you want your country's leader to look out for your country's needs first. I think my Governor Abbott is also doing right by Texans, but we don't seem to be scrambling too much to pull health infrastructure together. We also don't have any major hotspots yet.

I think everyone in every large city will get hit in a few weeks, and that's when the governors' of each states will be judged on how well they've done to prepare.

Maintaining food security is critical during this crisis. Unfortunately, we saw "food fights" in China, then Europe, then the U.S. Providing food to the country should definitely take priority over anything else.
