President Donald Trump said Saturday that he's considering a short-term quarantine of "hot spots" in parts of the tri-state area — New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — where cases of coronavirus continue to rise.

"We're thinking about certain things. Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it's a hotspot. ... We might not have to do it, but there's a possibility that sometime today we'll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut," he told reporters as he departed the White House.
"I'd rather not do it, but we may need it," said the President, who was on his way to Norfolk Naval Station for the sendoff of a Navy hospital ship to New York.

He later tweeted, "I am giving consideration to a QUARANTINE of developing 'hot spots', New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. A decision will be made, one way or another, shortly."

    A week too late.

    And useless under the circumstances.

Trump won't take any responsibility for the mess that's happening right now.

The irony is that he should have given the order for a national quarantine when he told the Americans that they were going back to work at Easter...

Just curious, what are your feeling about Biden being against a travel ban during a pandemic?

Trump needs to JUST STOP TALKING and winging it!
    It is infuriating.
I am a fervent democrat, I am mostly on board with the actions taken, but every time he opens his mouth it is self agrandizing, off the cuff, improvising.
This is really really not helpful and in fact quite harmful.
MAKE HIM SHUT UP and be an adult

Did it ever cross your mind you are not being open when you listen to the press briefings?

Or are you not doing so and getting your news from Trevor Noah?

Isn't it just NYC? Whatever. Trump may have the authority to declare a state of emergency (although it's questionable whether he could do so "selectively" without the impacted State's permission). I suspect Trump believes Cuomo is playing "politics" (which he may be to some degree) and is hitting back, thus adding a needless additional problem to the fight against the virus - i.e. he should have consulted with the Governor's of NY, NJ and Cn first, before discussing it publicly. The man largely creates his own problems.

So it's should be up to the governor but it's Trump's fault? How is Cuomo immune to any wrong doing from dems and he is governor?

Yeah, but a lot of them are ignoring it. A lot of them are migrating to other states. Those states are afraid they are bringing their crud with them. Democrats tend to do that. Look at Colorado or Texas. They move there because California's or New York's taxes suck and then try to change wherever they moved to into California or New York. That is what Florida is worried about. There are a lot of people that migrate there from New York. Rhode Island is even trying to round up people from New York that crossed into their state.

IMO, "The Cuomo Hour" is extremely useful to the people of NY. Not so much to everyone else in the country. The daily "hour" is appropriate for state and local news coverage. Conversely, I think Trump has been reluctant to implement national decisions regarding the virus on issues he believes are more properly state decisions. This may go to his political base's belief in "state's rights" and constitutional issues. However, IMO, the bulk of the populace won't draw such distinctions. It's a national problem and is deserving of a national policy beyond a post card stating "President Trump's Coronavirus Guidelines For America" and the distribution of $2 trillion in bailout money. I have no problem with the President considering a tri-state quarantine, but he should have coordinated the discussion with the governors PRIOR to a public announcement.

What's also on Trump's mind is that a national quarantine order would be a Chinese-esque step, and he'd be ridiculed on that front. Literally, for as much as Democrats clamor 'be an adult', they don't give him the space to be an adult. They also don't understand that Trump is not the kneejerk reaction type of individual(at least not now, earlier in his casino days he seemed to be.)

He wants to wait and see the situation unfold before taking action. That pisses off a lot of people who want "NOW" but Trump wants to make sure he's doing it right, rather than just doing it.

The travel ban was useless. We know it today.

If Trump had acted instead of pretending that everything was under control, US would not have the highest number of cases AND the highest rate of infection in the world.

Let's put the same thing in a different perspective. If he exercises Presidential powers, which many Democrats are calling for, and the situation becomes worse than he's predicted, he owns the problem. If he assumes those powers and the situation turns out well, he's a hero. Just as he refocused his own business on "renting his name," rather than actual "ownership" and seems to have always structured his "deals" whereby he could personally avoid bankruptcy and the losses of his investors, it's a "risk aversion" business model. He wants the freedom to either take credit for anti-virus successes, while being able to walk away from anti-virus failures.

Yeah, Trump just mentioning it puts a lot of light on the situation and pressure on Cuomo and De Blasio. The coordination in NYC by the local govt has been severely lacking. DeBlasio has resisted making any move to isolate the virus until it was too late. Cuomo wasn't happy with him. Now it's a huge problem and people are dying.

What's the contradiction? However, as someone presumably from Louisiana, do you think this year's Madi Gras went ahead as planned for economic reasons outweighing public safety?

I still can't get over it. Literally any pandemic like situation, they tell you to cut off the hotspots so as to mitigate the spread. And NY was a hot spot as early as the first week of March. That means for the better part of THREE weeks, New Yorkers went about their lives.(That also means travel not only to and form other States, but other countries.)

Democrats don't want to criticize the NYC administration because it's Democratic, but the fact remains they hold tremendously more blame than Trump.

Three weeks ago, Trump said the virus could miraculously disappear.

He hasn’t announced it as of yet. Right now it’s under consideration.

Yeah if it wasn’t obvious before it certainly is now. The next 2 weeks is looking very grim.

The fact that Trump did act, to which the poster complains that he didn't act, then says a travel ban is useless. Not sure how he thinks a virus spread across the seas on it's own. Maybe it's water soluble.

Yes, Mardi Gras is the main cause of the cases in LA, no doubt about it, and most probably they didn't want to take the loss of cancelling it. I don't live there anymore but I was born and raised there.
