One of the unintended but positive impacts of this quarantine, is that with everyone sitting at home, we have fewer medical emergencies that are not virus related. Fewer accidents on the way to work, fewer accidents at work. Fewer sports played means fewer fractures, falls, and stressors that induce a hospital stay, a hospital bed and/ or the use of resources . Fewer doctor appointments and consultations mean fewer non emergent surgeries are scheduled, and hip replacements, hysterectomies, cosmetic surgeries laporascopic procedures, xrays, MRIs, etc mean fewer gloves, gowns etc are sitting in waste bins.

Not to mention all those being used at your dentist and orthodontists office.

Exactly. We have a major problem here. And I would suspect that that doesn't just apply to our military.

I wanted to post my research on the EU vs US debate in terms of their handling of the virus. I only started tracking this data over the last five days (hence the awkward line for the EU), but this is a line graph of the cases per millions from the US vs Europe.

    upload_2020-3-31_11-49-7.png

The lines are very similar. From the point that I started tracking the data, the US has caught up to the EU by 18 cases per millions of population.

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo has tested positive for COVID-19. His brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, just announced this on TV.

That’s the result of very limited testing confined to only those with significant symptoms.

Cuomo is literally going over every aspect of the COVID-19 disaster.

There has not been one moment of this briefing that is about him. It's all about how to beat the pandemic. Every bit of it.

And when he says non-partisan things, I believe him. There is also an urgency in his voice and a sadness in his eyes that tells me that he knows that the next weeks are going to get very, very ugly.

His empathy for and at the same time, his accounting of the health care workers is really something. He is trying his damndest to plan for everything he can plan for. This guy is an amazing guy. New York can consider itself lucky to have a Governor who doesn't just spout platitudes, but is literally working with everyone he can.

On the other hand, we are going to start seeing a rise in violent crime with the loss of legal income and all that spare time among young people twiddling their thumbs in a low rent apartment. Do crime rates fall or grow in summers when school is out? Drug and alcohol use will rise while legitimate methods of paying for it will shrink. as well as overdoses and alcohol poisoning cases will multiply. Burglary, theft, and gang related activity will skyrocket as homelessness, desperation and hunger add fuel and thus begat gunshot, stab wounds and beating and guess where those gloves, masks and gowns we saved go?

You think that 1200 dollar check is going to keep that refrigerator full and that heat going for long? How long do you think an 18 year old frustrated unemployed kid is going to paint, draw, do video games and watch Netflix? The family that sits around together in tight quarters day after day after day, and day do NOT bond in loving devotion. They hit each other! Domestic violence is the next cat out of the bag. Fear, boredome, stress and poverty are not long term allies of the local police department.

Very good points. I agree hunger must exist to foment revolution here.

That said, a pandemic on its own like we have now is not capable of causing widespread hunger in this country. Our production and distribution system is very robust. Before Amazon, grocery store pick up/delivery etc there may have been a week link between retailers and consumers, but that is irrelevant today.

People may have to make a pizza instead of buying a frozen one, but nobody will experience hunger enough to spawn revolution without government or some other force besides the pandemic.

Look at countries with hunger problems. Almost always caused by failure or intentional actions of government.

Recall that only 20% of passengers on the Diamond Princess became ill.

There is also a new report on the CDC website where they did testing on all the (surviving) residents of the King County Life Care Center nursing home. Of the residents tested 30% had the virus and 1/2 half of those did not show any symptoms, so they had not been restricted to their rooms.

A couple of examples of people being in very close quarters show that infection rates may max out at 30% even with asymptomatic people in the mix.

Prayers to the sailors on the Roosevelt. We can only hope for the best possible outcome.

One of the recommendations from the IHME report is that cancelling/rescheduling all the elective and non-elective surgeries is so that anesthesia machines can be converted to ventilators. It looks like we can't make enough ventilators to meet the demand of every state wanting to order to "worst case scenario" levels so we may need all the anesthesia machines in every city/town.

It sounds like we've ramped up production to meet the needs for masks, gowns and even hospital beds (in most areas). The thing that's likely to kill us, literally, is if we go over peak projections and don't have ventilators.

I read recently that those latex gloves are a problem. They are mostly made in Maylaysia and those bright boys and girls decided that they would require all businesses to half their work force as a response to the virus, and provided an exemption based system based on an application process started by the owners, not based on industry. That meant the workers in the health care equipment fields were sitting at home, just like the workers in the shoe factories! Italy literally could not buy the gloves, because they were not being made in Maylaysia!

That would be a welcome novelty to the American public. Get it out in the open to such a degree that it affects political mentalities.

Because, for the moment, what is happening is that insufficiently taxed upper-incomes are going to a tiny percentage of the population. Who just sit on the money and then when dead have given it to their children. Mind you, that has been typical of mankind's existence on earth for centuries.

The question I am asking is, "Is that what we need and therefore want?" Methinks not when such a considerably large portion of the American population live at or below the Poverty Threshold and will never have the means to exit:

Forty-million people is about the same population as California, America's most populated state ....

Here's more bad news. The kindergarteners and the fifth graders are sitting on the couch right next to the abusers, the drunkards, the stoners and the meth addicts day and night now.

you don't know who is taking care of who and who is learning what lessons, but you know the lesson plan is never ending in this national homeschool experiment.

And you do so in a misguided fashion. Obviously the chloroquine was in medical form, rather than the fish tank cleaner. What should've happened, is that they should've went to the doctor to see if in fact they could get it. Either they tried and failed and resorted to this failure of a measure. Or, they mistakenly thought it was the same thing and drank it.

Either way, the fault of their stupidity lies with them. Not with Trump touting the effectiveness of the drug. That we're still even on this(after FDA emergency approval) proves the point: Anti-Trumpers are acting like a bunch of piss ants. No one likes a piss ant though, so I think if the Dems really want to win November they'll try less to be a piss ant. And more to be likeable.

It was the Trump believers that were stupid. Anyone that believes his boastful lies is stupid.

This is intellectual dishonesty, plain and simple. A grown man ate fish tank cleaner. He died. That's just Darwin, doing its' job. Trump never said "go drink fish tank cleaner," he was obviously talking about it as a medicinal form. Sheesh.

It obviously wasn't a lie as the FDA approved emergency approval. Trump didn't say drink fish tank cleaner. He said take a medically prescribed medication called chloroquine. Blaming Trump for the stupidity of the couple is the kind of crap we've dealt with for 3 years.

And the result of that is that the media(largely through conservative and independent lens) is no longer even remotely credible. The anti-Trumpers have hinged themselves on the madness of insanity and at this point, blaming Trump for their deaths is the kind of cold heartedness they'd claim Trump would have.
