The Mexican state is weak and corrupt—and totally unprepared for the coronavirus outbreak that’s about to hit the country.

When times are good I can understand how those of a certain ilk might be inclined to wax eloquent on their notions of supposed virtues - of 'Globalist Utopia' (One World ~ organizational oversight). Despite the travesty that this Chinese Virus has & will wreak upon us, on a myriad of levels, there are bound to be ideological silver linings - or at least I hope there will be!

'We' have largely been caught flat footed on so many of levels; ranging from personal preparedness to the (Constitutional) fundamental tenets of US sovereignty / security of our borders, domestic manufacturing & immigration influx. I pray that from the rubble, that is bound to ensue from this Chinese inflicted pandemic, we will rebuild as a Nation - wiser, stronger, disabused of our pie in the sky inanity... What say you AOC, Pelosi, Schumer, MSM et al. ...?

Two weeks ago I warned that Mexico was dangerously unprepared for a coronavirus outbreak and that once it hit, it would spread quickly, overwhelming a weak and corrupt Mexican state and a woefully inadequate health-care system. Despite warnings from health officials that an outbreak was inevitable, the Mexican government had done almost nothing to prepare and refused to take the threat seriously.

I agree in regards to Mexico. Anyone paying attention to the statistics know that Mexico has been outright lying about their numbers of infected and dead -- pretty much just how China lied. Logic dictates that it must have been much higher than has been admitted to. Thus when Mexico is no longer able to pull off the lies it is going to seem to onlookers as if a Covid-19 explosion has occurred inside that nation.

What would make them no longer able to pull off the lies?

Because panicked citizens will tell the world what is happening and because at some point the Mexican government will begin begging for help.

Nothing, all governments lie whenever they think it is to their benefit to do so. What I say about politicians also applies to governments in general. That is watch what they do and ignore what they say.

Remember well that charity begins at home. Americans first, even more so in this time of great need.

If the choice comes down to saving a thousand Americans or sending the aid to save a thousand Mexicans, let the Mexicans die so the Americans can live.

Trump has already announced a "crackdown" on border security. I would link to the details, but as with much that Trump says, the details don't seem to be available.

The only nation that can help is China, because that's where everything comes from. Our latest escapade is bound to cause a rupture in our relations with France. A plane with 20 million masks France had ordered from China, were grabbed by a US firm as the plane was ready to leave and diverted to the US. They paid more for the masks, but I'm sure there was some bullying and threats as well.

Now that can be excusable to a certain extent, but what can't be excusable is sanctioning a nation like Cuba that ordered supplies, and yet they couldn't be delivered because of last minute sanctions. Didn't we do that to Iran as well? Our humanity never ceases to amaze me, but we will pay for it. There are too many examples in history. I fear for my country.

While it wouldn't surprise me if they were lying, I'm also open to the possibility that Mexican authorities simply don't know how many COVID-19 cases they've got. Testing didn't exactly go smoothly in the USA, and I suspect it went many times worse for our southern neighbors. That's the thing about a corrupt and incompetent government: it may truly not know how many people are sick or dying, or what they're dying from.

Unfortunately, half of Mexico will be considering that their best course of action will be to sneak across the border and pretend to be a U.S. citizen.

Sometimes the lust for power can turn around and bite you in the behind. For years Americans in powerful positions have turned a blind eye to the influx of illegal immigration into this country. At present it is the Democrats who are the main roadblock to solving the immigration problem. The Republicans have as much guilt on there hands in the past. It would have been in the USA's best interest to invade Cuba and depose Castro and return the refugees in Miami. It should never had mandated that if one get's one foot on land then we have to grant asylum. Puerto Rico should have been granted independence. Seems like some just cannot let go of Colonialism. For years we had a policy where those from South America crossed our borders and worked and at night returned back home. Visas were granted and those who abused the privilege were sent back to their homes.

Then it all changed. The parties realized that certain groups were a good source of political power. Nothing pulls at the heartstrings of Americans like "we need to do it because of the children". Corporations used " we can't find Americans to take the jobs". ( Guess not, when you don't offer a decent wage.) We can't break up families.

So , my question is "who's gonna pick the lettuce?". You have 6.1 million Americans out of work but do you think the growers are going to hire them? How are we going to keep coronavirus19 from coming across the border with the pickers? The virus can linger for days so how do you know what comes from the fields is safe to eat?. (I'll be grown my own. Like the Victory Gardens of WW ll)

France stopped trucks carrying masks to the UK and confiscated the cargo.

It's a competition down to the death. Somebody got to live, somebody else got to die.

I expect the USA to lookout for American citizens first, so less of us die.

Considering Mexico has around 0.5% of the cases that we do, it seems that Mexico would want to keep the dirty, disease-ridden gringos north of the border...

That's wonderful news. Especially at the U. of Texas at Austin I would think. Make a permanent travel ban to Mexico.

Given that America has about 25% of all COVID-19 cases worldwide I would have thought Mexico securing its border from Americans is a very wise strategy.

When this is all over I only hope that the people of America, come to the realization, that the problem wasn't so much the virus. The problem was we were ill prepared for the containment of the pandemic. Why might you ask? For years we have shipped all our ingenuity overseas. We shipped all our manufacturing overseas. We demanded low cost items, in which the corporations were glad to give us, because they could keep wages low for slave labor and also low wages for a service oriented economy. Americans rebelling against wages and benefits? No problem, they have a whole world of applicants willing to work for less. Funny part is, we will let, you train them. What was the payback? How about other countries have us over the barrel because they have all the strategic materials and manufacturing base.

Thought Trump was a little hokie with his America First agenda but at least we are energy independent and I only hope that the citizens of our country demand that we bring back our manufacturing base. "America First for Americans" sounds like it is in our national interest. Be Prepared.

I was listening to an expert on this topic, and he was saying that even after all the First World developed countries get this under control, the disease will still be going around making its circles in other parts of the world, and as such will still pose the risk of being reintroduced back to countries like the US for some time.

This is likely going to entail shutting down the borders for a few years, with very stringent border checkpoints and quarantine controls.

Yeah, this is something which the left hasn't put into practice with Trump. They care so much about what he SAYS, rather than what he actually does! "Oh he says nice things about Putin" they say. Yeah, but he armed the Ukrainians!
