To your point, the ABC/Ipsos poll (i.e. the same as the OP) from 3/18-3/19 had Trump at 55-43. So that's an 8 point drop to the approval and a 9 point increase to the disapproval.

Oh it'll slip until it's over no doubt that's the nature of the beast unfortunately. That being said it all depends on how and when we beat this thing, unfortunately the world is still f'd up with this virus. The only way to kill it is draconian measures, no travel, marshal law type stuff until we get a vaccine and 99.9% would disapprove if Trump did that.

Frankly, and I am a dude who loves polls and polling, but right now, in the middle of a pandemic that is likely to take millions of innocent lives, right now is exactly the wrong time for pollsters to be taking polls.

Now would be an excellent time for pollsters to contribute funds to companies to make all sorts of PPE.

THAT would be the best thing that pollsters can do right now.

And just to remind, I am very much a numbers person and I do love polling.

But hey, now is not the right time.

Human life is far more important than a ****ing number. Trump is Trump, no polling value is going to change him. We all have to get through this.

The premium pollsters should all take a hiatus from this kind of polling and instead pull together to help. It it saves even an handful of lives, then it was worth it.

    My two cents.

I think that you are wrong. Life does not have to stop because of the virus, we don't have to live through data darkness. I think that now is the time we should be collecting as much data as possible, including polling data. You can't learn if ya don't know. Not just nationwide but also locality by locality. Lessons learned and all that. It is in a great disruption that a data junkie goes wild. There is a thrill in watching the cracks come undone, by the numbers.

    I don't care about the polls. Trump got elected in 2016 with most polls predicting a Hillary win. And he won despite that fact that a majority of voters voted for Hillary. It's a long way until November and to write off Trump is a big mistake;

"The fact that so many forecasts were off-target was particularly notable given the increasingly wide variety of methodologies being tested and reported via the mainstream media and other channels. The traditional telephone polls of recent decades are now joined by increasing numbers of high profile, online probability and nonprobability sample surveys, as well as prediction markets, all of which showed similar errors."

    This is just the beginning.

The deaths are piling up and the economic effects are not yet really being felt on the ground.

Trump will pay a political price for managing this crisis and especially for not taking it seriously from the outset.

Reminds me of some old quotes I read about the Nazis and media propaganda and public opinion.

First of all, I bet that "half" will disagree with Trump no matter what he does.
But then some people think he should do more, and some people blame him for the effects of doing too much, so he'll be blamed no matter what he does, and even blamed for the effects of things that had nothing to do with what he did.

ALL of us, rep and dem, want Trump to act like a man, not an adolescent. And, when he does, to ANY slight degree, he gains trust. That is why NOW, polls are especially important. The docs showed him data of what it would look like, if he opened for easter. These polls show what will happen if he stays a partimer.

I disapprove of almost everything managed by the government. He still emerged as the voice of reason compared to the opposition.

Funny how those calling him a liar also depend on him to tell them what to do to avoid a virus.

Wonder how many disapprove because they think we're not doing enough, and how many disapprove because they think we're doing too much...

And ............. Here's video of fauci lying saying the virus wasn't a major threat on January 21st.

    https://twitter.com/gregkellyusa/status/1246060637748330496

Thank GOD for President Trump becoming proactive just a week later in spite of the CDC clown.

(Since you presented a straw man I guess I'll play that game, too. :) )

Oh, you mean his crystal ball ran out of batteries? The only way this was going to be stopped is if all borders were locked down, including air and sea travel, and martial law implemented while we still had zero cases. The dems were raising hell at any mention of shutting down borders. And you know damned well everyone would have flipped **** and told the feds to **** off if they had tried to go draconic at that point. There was no stopping this. Personally, I think we should all stop freaking out, let those who are going to die off die off, and carry on with life as the survivors are all pretty much immune. The world is way overpopulated anyway. If its my time, well, its been fun. Same goes for my loved one. See you in the next lifetime. Better to live a good shorter life while you are alive than live longer scared in cages.

You have a quote of Dr. Fauci saying you need to take it seriously and follow the CDC guidelines, on January 21st - when the number of confirmed cases was one and roughly 35 days before Trump contradicted his own health experts by saying he "did not believe it was inevitable that the virus would spread in the US" - as your proof that he is lying?

Dr. Fauci is the target of your ire, huh?

If you'd like to jump off the mortal coil early by engaging in risky behavior, that is your choice. I do not think your loved ones would agree and I sure as **** do not agree with the notion of you placing my loved ones at increased risk.

And let's be clear, Trump was getting criticized at the time he made those statements because those statements were objectively ****ing dumb (and outright lies) at the time he made them.

An interesting question and I imagine that the poll delves into that subject, but I'll check.

I would also be willing to bet though that the divide between those who think we are not doing enough are mostly Democrats and Independents and those who think we are doing too much are mostly Republicans.
