Here in sunny Florida we've begun our government-imposed period of house arrest. Governor Ron DeSantis has decreed that all non-essential personnel should remain in their homes unless visiting essential services (doctor, grocery store, etc).

Of course, I'm not going to do that.

I'm considered "media" since I work for an local magazine, so I'm able to go pretty much anywhere I want, assuming it's not closed. For instance, I can't go to the beach or the local fishing pier, as those considered closed and off limits. This past week I've driven into downtown St. Augustine, which is always bustling until the bars close, and it's been deserted. It's almost creepy walking down the main drag in town and nobody is out and about.

This is a shot I took around 9:30pm on Wednesday, before the start of the "stay at home" order. It shows Cathedral Street and the Bridge of Lions. Under normal circumstances you'd have a slim chance of finding a parking spot on this street at that time of the evening. The bridge always has traffic passing over it, but I could've laid down and taken a nap on it Wednesday night:

And, just for fun, at the suggestion of a friend I'm going to shave off my goatee. I'll then post a photo a day to social media, staying unshaven until I can go to a bar and order a Martini.

Hey, if nothin' else, this sure is gonna' be weird!

I think this is happening all over the country and I can't help but to believe this is helping with the spread. Our biggest issue is we're getting the results from testing so numbers are sky rocketing although they should start following once the curve catches up to the testing. Trump and his team of scientist have been preaching this for 3 weeks now yet some ignored some if not all of the steps to slow this thing down. We are paying a huge price due to China hiding this for a month or so but it will start slowing soon if we stay diligent.

Watch: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Defends Deeming Churches ‘Essential’

I applaud Gov/. DeSantis for his decision on 'houses or worship'! If congregants are judicious about spacing themselves out - exercising commonsesensical 'personal responsibility' for themselves & others ~ who the hell is big Gov. to say otherwise! Until their is a clear violation of personal responsibility (within spacing guidelines), I say step the hell off 'big Sis'... !

Yep, in Houston every day is like the immediate aftermath of a hurricane; you know, the streets are mostly deserted and everything is unnaturally still and quiet. The wife and I have been going to a different park every day just to walk around a bit. It's surrealistic to see all the playground equipment taped off and secured as if they were all crime scenes.

One of my best friends live in Houston, and he says the same thing. He's a security specialist, so his job is considered "essential", so he's out and about every day. He's says it's all just too freakin' weird...

I hope your call for "personal responsibility" extends to treating Covid-19 if it starts to spread among church goers ... cause
shifting that responsibility to doctors and nurses and putting them at more risk is a really suck ass thing to do.

Wow, what is happening here? I'm agreeing with your post? Yes, I am. Churches should not be considered essential. People can worship at home and can even do a live streaming service. I see no reason except stupidity to congregate with others at a church.

I was really holding out a sliver of hope that this thread could've avoided turning political, but I guess I give this place too much credit sometimes...

It is really too bad your Governor did not do this in Mid March when it was really necessary. Thousands fleed NYC to FL to escape getting sick. The bad news? Many of them had the virus and if you look at the data, it has spread like wildfire in your state thanks to their presence.
TX has locked down the border with LA because of Mardi Gras carriers. Too late for them also.

If Fl responds correctly, they will let you all out of your homes in mid to late May just to catch up with much of the rest of the country.

BTW, this is coming from a conservative that does understand we all need to separate ourselves from other people as much as possible until this gift from the Chinese ebbs and a reliable vaccine is found.

Oddly enough, for the first time this morning we noticed much more traffic out and about. We figure that it is the first signs of cabin fever. People have watched as much Netflix as they can tolerate and read whatever they are going to read and now are getting stir crazy.

    Of course you do.

In Washington, a choir of 60 met. 47 got sick and so far two have died.

Yep, a LOT of people. Florida was running wild long before he put in the order.

Our stay at home order went into effect at midnight last night.

In the days leading up to it, the roads were pretty clear. Sure, there were people driving around, but nothing like it normally is. Yesterday, though, the roads were quite busy. I can only assume it's because people wanted to get out one last time...

We were told to stay at home about a week and a half ago barring necessary trips to the grocery store and etcetera. Expect at around the second week mark for people to begin getting a little rebellious.

    Same here in San Antonio.

The boys and I were suffering from cabin fever the other day so we hopped in the Jeep and took a ride. The downtown/riverwalk area was like a ghost town, when ordinarily it'd be annoyingly congested. Just a few homeless folks and some construction workers out.

The problem was that our government made it totally political from the first day they knew about this virus. The republicans in Congress and Governors all over the US have been following Trump and Fox News lead from the beginning by downplaying it and not being honest about the seriousness of this epidemic. That's why it is still, and will remain political, until this partisan playing on both sides ends.

We have been self-quarantined for more than one month. I don't mind it one bit because I know that we're following infection control procedures if we ever go into a store for a short time and I'm confident we know exactly what to do to make certain we aren't bringing this virus home with us. This is a matter of life and death here in the NE and trust me, there's far worse things than boredom.

Nice pic. Here in Los Angeles, there are few cars on the streets, but cops are waiting with their radar guns.

Were you thinking this board is a separate reality?

The executive branch response to COVID has been wildly political and notable in its false statements and lack of leadership.

And, the result is that pushback of any kind gets seen as political.

The Marxist leftist plan to shut down the gun-stores and churches has failed here in Florida thanks to Trump and Governor Desantis

Operation “No USA at All” has failed and the Cuomo19 America Never Great scourge will soon be over
