The National Rifle Association, the leading gun-rights advocacy group in the US, has filed a lawsuit naming New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo — both his capacity as governor and a private citizen — over the closure of gun stores in the state as part of ordered non-essential business closures.

"As a result of the government's overreach, most New Yorkers have no legal way to exercise the constitutional right to purchase arms or ammunition," the NRA lawsuit alleged. "The current public health emergency does not justify impeding the exercise of Second Amendment rights, especially during a time when many New Yorkers have valid concerns about the ability of the government to maintain order—and criminals are being prematurely released from jails."

First off, why would the NRA even have jurisdiction here?? I can see a gun store filing this suit (and losing), but not a lobbying group. Also, why would they sue Cuomo as a "private citizen"? Neither of those make any sense...

Obviously, a store that sells ONLY guns or ammunition (vs a Walmart or Dicks) are not essential stores in this current crisis. Besides, by the time this frivolity is kicked out of a court, those stores are likely to be open again....

I have the constitutional right to vote as well... How can the government prevent me from voting during this crisis?? (Oh, by pushing primaries back until it is safer to do so?? - Got it)

Cuomo doesn't sound the least bit worried....Thoughts?

The right to self defense is essential and absolute. No man has the right to strip another of his means of protection when safety and civil order is in question.

Sure, so those so inclined should have planned ahead or find another source for a gun in New York for the time being..

No man has the absolute right to have a gun store open near them...

If a person doesn't know by now it's his responsibility to protect his family he shouldn't be allowed to have a gun.

    Sounds GOOD to me.

Besides anybody who buys into that "Survivalist/Civil War Coming/2A" sort of thing ALREADY has 50 guns and 20,000 rounds of Ammo in their underground bunker.

I fully support Cuomo's decision to close the gun stores.

The NRA probably has the same jurisdiction the ACLU has.

We could use a virus that only infects nra officials, and those who support them.

We could call it GUNNUT-20, or something like that...

    Fanatical idiots

Cuomo has nothing to worry about.

There will be plenty of law suits against all of those people who helped spread this and make the pandemic worse. For starters, I hope we sane States will be suing the States that refuse to issue stay at home orders.

    Well, that's an interesting point.

As you say, most states have issued SAH orders, but there's really no teeth to them..

Others have made SAH recommendations, but not orders. I imagine even people in those states are self-monitoring..

I doubt what you say will come to pass...

More rural states are simply at an advantage here.... just the way it goes..

By refusing to shelter in place or even encourage it, they will prolong the pandemic and force everyone else to shelter in place longer, cost the nation far more money, and cause far more death and suffering. They could cause this to drag on for months instead of weeks because they are not isolating the virus.

The virus will spread in rural states just like NY. It will just take longer. By the time they realize how badly they have screwed up it will be too late.

Interesting that many liberals don't see the exercise of a Constitutional right as essential.

If you want to claim groups like the ACLU cant sue people due to jurisdiction by all means go for it.

Well, so is the freedom of movement. And to contract. And to exchange goods. Those rights are no longer recognized, either. In the land of the free and home of the brave, people are calling for the murder of their fellow citizens for disobeying the dictates of their rulers and the orders of the enforcement class.

The anti frivolous law suit crowd now thinks that during a pandemic is the right time to bring up a law suit that only endangers people (guess what: lawyers are not essential services right now)
The personal responsibilty crowd all of a sudden has huge compassion for those that were just not prepared with enough guns.
Face it, the NRA is trying to argue on principle regardless of how many deaths it entails to keep non essetial stores open. Shame on you

Should I produce my play on stage and sell tickets to the audience because my right to free speech is essential and absolute?
    Shame on you all

    Not during a national crisis!

What part of that is so dang difficult for you to understand?

The main reason for clamping down on gun sales during this crisis is to prevent what we are already seeing, a rise in domestic violence. The last thing anyone needs to see is a new gun owner loaded for bear while in lock down.

Police see rise in domestic violence calls amid coronavirus lockdown
