A Nebraska home invasion predictably ended in violence Sunday after that home turned out to be owned by UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith, who fought the suspect to protect his family in the house.

His wife woke him up just after 4 a.m. CT. He could hear a man in the house “screaming at the top of his lungs,” then found the man — later reportedly identified as one Luke Haberman — in the family’s computer room.

A fight soon ensued. Smith, who lost to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones last March, called it “one of the toughest fights” he ever had.

Between Haberman’s vigor, behavior, lack of clear motive and apology, it might be a good guess that drugs were involved.

Man cannot live by CoronaVirus threads alone.... This is first good laugh I've had all week.

Yeah, it's a scary story at its core, but a funny spin nonetheless... OTOH, how many home break-ins end in simple physical altercations instead of serious injuries or deaths?

    Drugs huh....Ya think??.

Obviously, this is self defense, but I wonder if it's true that if trained fighters critically hurt somebody, they could be liable in some way?? "Registered Weapons" and all that nonsense??

Interesting. It really goes to show, that even UFC fighters are just human.

Training and what not certainly increases your likelihood of winning a fight and protecting yourself, but ultimately even one false move and a completely untrained person can knock out a trained fighter.

Gladly that didnt happen here, but I bet it was a humbling moment for the fighter.

I'm thinking it being 4am had something to do with it.

Well certainly, and I dont want to create the impression that I’m downplaying the significance of training.

My point being though is a “warriors spirit”, for lack of a better term, is a massive contributing factor.

I watch UFC a lot, and it is mind blowing how variable these fights are. Some last all rounds, while others are ended in the first few seconds. Some people sustain heavy damage and continue fighting, some of these same people take a rabbit punch just right and collapse on the spot. There are a lot of variables that determine the victor in a fight. A person with a fighters spirit of similar size, even without training, is definitely not to be discounted immediately even against someone capable of going toe to toe with Jon jones.

My oldest son had a similar experience to this. He didn't have a chance to get to a weapon as the attacker kicked in a door and suddenly attacked him. However, he was able to address the situation and prevail due to a MMA background. Guns are good and certainly the best option, but are not always available.

Its been said by expert swordsmen that the most dangerous opponent is one with no training at all, because they are entirely unpredictable. I imagine this is true, to an extent, in unarmed melee as well.

    Very true.
I am don't have an MMA background so there is never one farther than 20 feet from anywhere in my home if not on my person. Don't get excited all you anti gunners as they are safe, secured, and available within a second or two and where I live and how my home is constructed, I have ample time to respond.

Well good, because its an important part of living. Being largely self reliant, because as demonstrated by your OP...if you are seconds away from being hurt or killed by a madman, the police are minutes away...if you even manage to call them at all.

    Home defense is VERY important.

I was hoping people could stay remotely on topic... It started out well, but the hijackers showed up...

It's as predictable as the sunrise...

Smith was lucky the intruder wasn't armed. The intruder was lucky he didn't run into an elderly lady with a gun.

There is plenty of dead kids, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, grandmas and grandpas, boyfriends and people even think they were at the right house but went to the wrong house.

That gun may have been a very big regrettable error...

Far more often its not a mistake when someone breaks into someone elses home. The gun is a necessity to create the highest likelihood of survival for yourself and your family.

I've watch my share of MMA, I can say with 100% certainty that I would not last 5 minutes. If he was kind enough to identify himself and his occupation we can skip the whole beating and submission part altogether, I'll just sit down quietly in a chair and wait for the police, thank you mr. badass.

It could be that the suspect was on drugs and couldn't feel pain. During my law enforcement career I've tangled with people like that before. One of the scariest people I knew was a guy who was anti-social and somewhat mental, and didn't take drugs, but who simply had no reaction to pain. I don't know if that had anything to do with why that fight lasted so long, but ... just sayin'.
