A COVID-19 Vaccine?

Ultimately, the pandemic will not be defeated until a vaccine is developed and vaccinations widely administered.

The best Immunologists are working feverishly toward that end. Obviously, it is an enormous challenge under incredible pressure.

Trump has been continually blowing gas about a vaccine - as he has been about cures - after he had, for months, scoffed at warnings concerning the seriousness of the pandemic, the need for preparedness, and other matters properly within the purview of public health professionals:

"People are surprised that I understand it!
Every one of these doctors said:
'How do you know so much about this?'"​

In fact, not a single one of "these doctors" is on record as saying anything remotely approximating that.

It behooves us to ignore the kibitzing of casino operators, vodka salesmen, reality-tv entertainers, etc., even when they claim to be credentialed by a prestigious institution.

Until a vaccine has been developed and administered, testing is vial to prevent the spread. As we all know, Trump lied when he claimed that

"Anybody who needs a test can get a test!"

... but that would be a sensible measure before returning to normal activities until the vaccine is eventually available.

Without a verified, tested, safe, and clinically-proven vaccine:

Any "Return to Normalcy" is Impossible.

The USA will be lucky to be back on solid footing by 2022 (and about 1/3 of the current economy will be lost forever).

A vaccine is just a diluted dose of the virus. From the start the first patient should just spit in a cup and we can add a gallon of water and everyone drink from it. That's a vaccine.

How vaccines work is that the body is introduced to a small dose of the virus. It fights off the small dosage and is prepared the next time the real virus hits. It's basic high school science and the lack of scientific knowkedge from the left is astounding.

Vaccination is not introducing small dose of the virus.
Before you do that you must either weaken or kill the virus.
So, your scenario where one spits and dilutes saliva with water and injects that into other people would in fact just spread the disease.

 

Actually there's an extensive list of viruses that don't have a vaccine which have lost their virulence due to herd immunity. There is also a long list of viruses for which a vaccine has been developed that still have high yearly casualties. There are also lots of viruses for which no vaccine has been developed, but they've been dealt with using other treatments.

You should use some of the time you spend typing up these posts to read a bit natty lite.

UK flirted with herd immunity, before (wisely) jettisoning the idea. To go the herd immunity route would kill too many people, unless we're way way off on how many people have this. Iceland has done significant testing of their tiny population (10% of all people) and they're not finding very many people have it. Only 1% of their population so far. Maybe we get an effective treatment for it, down the road. It will have to be effective enough to keep people out of the ICU.

 

I think this is a wake up call for medical researchers to look into viruses that attack other viruses or defend their host against other viruses. This field is like an untapped gold mine.

I didn't say it was idea. All I said was natty lite was wrong, and there are other ways pandemics have been brought to an end.

 

Reminds me of an article in Scientific American, a few decades ago, about using Rhinovirus to grow horns on head. Any attempt to make a virus that is smart enough to do the right thing, odds are, it will end us all really quickly.
