Texas governor Abbott has had tanks and military deployed to route groups of protesters carrying rifles who are defying the governor's "stay at home" order, in the wake of the coronavirus.

The protesters believe the governor's stay at home order is not legal, and their act of carrying guns is not otherwise illegal under state law.

Part of this may be that the state is turning increasingly more Blue, and there are still Texans who believe in old-style ideals of freedom.

It is kind of disturbing to see the government response to this.

Here's one Texas sheriff who is justifying the governor's actions:

Some people apparently don't like what he has to say and are calling him "corrupt".
In any case, there seems to be a lot of anger and outrage in Texas over individual rights being taken away.

Their Gov Abbot is a Republican.

I find it reassuring. Trump is instructing his minions to disobey the local laws and revolt, which is treason in my book. He is trying to disempower the State governments. The governors need to take back control.

One thing about these armed protesters, if they really want to get serious with their guns, a helicopter gun ship can fix that in about ten seconds.

Probably more like a moderate Republican.

Let's not forget, former President Bush, who was also former governor of Texas at one time, is also a Trump-hater.

Awww got my hopes up for nothing, thought I was going to see an actual tank.

But seriously it was a smart decision for police to send an armored vehicle to respond to a situation where you have a mix of angry people, alcohol, and firearms.

    Hah!

This “penal colony” has had fewer than one hundred deaths and because our reinfection rate is so low we are about to cautiously reopen the economy

The governor didn't deploy anything. The Ector County Sheriff and Odessa SWAT teams went out to enforce the state orders. Some bar owner running gaming machines opened against the state mandate for bars to stay closed. They claim it was to "organize a protest for 2nd amendment rights".

Organizing a protest is still defensible if the protesters tell the judge that they were observing 6ft distance, just like anywhere else they can go...legally. And if they had actually organized outside the "closed" bar, there wouldn't have been an issue.

Probably, the "protesters" just wanted to go to the bar to drink and gamble, and "2nd amendment protest" was the excuse when the Sheriff and SWAT team showed up. Texas has open carry anyway, so what's to protest?

Thank Obama for donating retired military equipment to local police and sheriff's departments. The fear and intimidation factor went up with that gift, and reinforced the change of motto from the old "To protect and to serve" to the new "To enforce the law".

The Sheriff seems very reasonable and the "protesters" didn't cause any big ruckus and were compliant. All's well that ends well.

Yeah, nothing disappearing quickly than a "law and order" Republican deciding the duly-elected authority such as the governor or President or LEO is enforcing a law these "law and order" don't personally like!

The concept of "freedom" being somehow old-fashioned is....um...interesting.

Seems the left wishes to vote in authoritarianism as quickly as is practicable.

    Savage.

OP, I don't think they're using tanks but armored vehicles. That being said... do we really want local police departments to have access to military grade equipment if they're not properly trained in how to use it?

What about 20 years earlier when the Mexicans took the same land from Spain?

Many of the Texicans had Hispanic surnames and are respected just as much as Bowie, and Crockett.
