‘A Year’s Worth of Suicide Attempts in the Last Four Weeks’: California Doctor Calls for End to Lockdown

B-B-But somebody might get the virus! Isn't that the rallying cry of people who don't want the nation to re-open for business? If one person dies from Covid-19 then it's not worth the risk. But what has the Right been trying to tell these people?

There are consequences for long term shutdowns that can be worse than the numbers of Covid-19 deaths that have occurred. Income flow matters. People seeing debts endlessly mount up with no way to pay the bills that won't go away, can reach their breaking points. People shut in all the damn time with no relief and no end in sight can reach their breaking points. As ANYONE could have predicted, suicide rates are skyrocketing. Welcome to the concept of negative consequences for the Best of Intentions.

Those are the larger body of collateral deaths due to excessive fear and the dictatorial mindset of the sick holding governorships.

So we are expected to believe that the right has suddenly started caring about people who are suicidal? Given their utter contempt for the lives of those threatened by COVID-19....or pretty much anything that isn't themselves or a foetus threads like this are pathetic.

Reminds me of all those people who pretend to care about mental illness every time someone sprays bullets around a classroom full of kids. Then they stop pretending to care until next time.

Stop pretending this is about anything else other than politics & personal convenience. That would at least have a ring of truth to it.

    I don't give a **** what they care about.
Your post just proved what you care about, and it's not the suicide victims in this article.

"Trauma nurse Kacey Hansen, who has worked at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for over three decades, said she had “never seen” so many attempts, most being young adults."

Buy a One Wheel or a Grom, wear a mask, wash hands, and ride those to work; does wonders for mental health.

If you reopen and have to shut everything down again, you'll see even more suicides. There are no good options here.

Suicides and other deaths are just collateral damage. What’s important is to destroy America, so Trump won’t be re-elected.

Guess Trump should have done a better job of mitigating the threat from covid-19 then.

The fact is that this virus is a once in a century type event. You aren't going to alleviate the threat that the virus poses economically or pscyhologically or physically by simply demanding that the country open up. People aren't going to return to their normal lives until we have a better handle on working treatments and a working and mass produced vaccine. Nor are you going to convince most people to return to normal simply because of a spike in suicides or by mocking those people who are legitimately and rationally afraid of the virus.

This is a broader write up on the impacts of covid-19 on suicide rates.

Surely this genius Trump will save the US like he did when he saved the US from Oblama...Time for yet another tax cut for the rich and make it permanent.

We know this: You don't care about them either, because if you did instead of going on this screed, you'd have posted something positive or at least sympathetic towards the victims of these suicide attempts. But you can't do that, because any negative consequences to the shutdown shows a 'flaw'. It might stun the Left, but you're a lot closer to Trump then you would've liked to believe. Here's example #1.

Your argument works against you. Insisting people stay home knowing these results doesn't exactly make your side look like they care about human life. I don't believe either party gives a damn about my health. Its time to stop waiting for the government to tell us how to avoid a virus and reverse the overreaching abuse of power forcing people to stay home.

It's all just so absolutely stupid and pointless--lock up the living so dead won't die. Never gonna work.

Think about drug addicts. You can tell an addict they're addicted, hell they themselves KNOW they're addicted, but by this point the cycle is so engraved, they can't stop it. Take the disaster that is Michigan, if she woke up one day and decided to end all of this, and the cases don't become what's feared, she knows as well as anyone that in 2022, she'll be replaced.

This shutdown is a more persistent pain than the virus, those cheering it now won't be cheering it in another 5 months as they are on the edge of their own financial perils.

The point was to flatten hospital demand, not end all contagions, infections, and deaths, all which are impossible to end. They gave AOC all she asked for, though not to save the polar bears, but to hammer home this idea into our collective souls: Your right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ends when the needs of the many require your sacrifice.

    We are fkd.

Only if we accept the lunacy of that idea, which I don't(and my family doesn't either). Precisely because it is the unseen enemy, we cannot go about our lives as though every person has COVID-19, or that every conceivable way to get covid exists. We now know the CDC has lowered confidence in the idea of getting it from surfaces. And it's only a logical conclusion from there to presume, that you're not going to get it from touching(and they came out and said you're okay with groceries and food)

Very basically, just avoid people sneezing and coughing. Gee, like every other viral infection that ever was.

A very sad reality. And there are also the increases in domestic and child abuses.

    Exactly...

Or they finally came to grips with the abject despair of living in Trump's America?

A lot of people live alone, so ordering them to shelter in place is akin to solitary confinement, which is considered a form of torture. Add to that, losing their income and perhaps a loved one, and it's not surprising that so many people get so depressed that they just want to end it.

Humans are a social species, isolation takes a huge toll on their mental and physical well-being.

Not to mention the fact that by ignoring the virus...and forcing seniors and medically at risk people to lock down possibly for years....THEY are at a truly high suicide risk

As always...the Trumpers ignore the concerns of seniors
