I had coffee with an old friend yesterday. He is a dyed in the wool liberal. How ever when we disagree he doesnt get mad and end up calling me names like so many libs do when they lose the argument. That is what I like about him. So any way, the discussion was over what I call criminal invaders, and he call refugees. I pointed out when you look at videos of almost all the big groups, they are 90% composed of men 18 to 30. I said to me they would seem to be cowards that wont stay in their country and take it back from all the socialist dictators, and make it a decent country again. But then to his regret he said but only the government has guns, the government confiscated all the guns, so they are powerless. I reminded him of a discussion on gun control when his position was only the government should have guns. I think it gave him something to ponder.
Being a leftist however, he will shake off the epiphany and return to embracing the -- only the government should be armed -- FAITH of his ideology. It's only a matter of time.
Yes- it's a moral quandary for many who refuse to accept that some ideas only work in a perfect world, or that if we just endorsed such ideas everybody would become moral and decent.
It was St Reagan that armed the criminals that subsequently became those governments so that is who is to blame for all of the refugees.
Yet, at the same time, many conservatives want to pour trillions of dollars into making sure that the government has an army that could defeat any enemy, foreign or domestic. So it's kind of a wash when government weapons are so far beyond the scope of what citizens could bring to a battle. I'm not against private ownership of guns - but let's be realistic about the situation - if a government has the backing of the armed forces, it would just be a matter of destroying local economies, much as gorilla groups have done around the world, and in the end, nobody is any better off and the average citizen is the one who pays for it. - Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. - From Isaac Asimov
It's as if all of the lessons of history are meaningless to them in the face of their feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelings.
But it's also true that most compromises do cause many deaths and sacrifices. The say a camel is a race horse designed by a committee- trying to make everyone happy, and compromising most values in the process. It's like compromising the skill requirements for ball team so everyone can play- you have created a nobody excels platform that can't win. Compromise has to be in focus with the objectives, has to preserve the qualities rather than sacrifice them to accommodate everyone.
And which country in the world has responded to the Covid -19 virus by the worlds biggest socialist expenditure of taxpayer money in the history of the world??? Future generations will be paying off the debt long after we are all long deceased!!
I take your friend's position, refugees seeking help. Things have changed in a century, people hating each other more.
