Did or did not the authorities lie about the effectiveness of masks?

I say they did to preserve a scarce resource for medical personnel. And they may have accomplished that but with the downside that people trust the authorities less.

    No. They did not lie.

They said that the benefit of the general public was outweighed by the risk. And then the calculus changed when both the risk side diminished (i.e. hospitals got better stocked) and the benefit side increased (i.e. the experts learned more about the ability to asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic to spread the virus).

No, they said masks were ineffective. e.g.

    ================

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday that “the data doesn't show” that wearing masks in public will help people during the coronavirus pandemic.

Adams, a member of the Trump administration's Coronavirus Task Force, made the comment one day after President Trump said he sees a scenario where all Americans could be expected to wear masks in public "for a short period of time after we get back into gear."

Trump acknowledged on Monday that he did not yet discuss the idea with his task force and said it is "certainly something we could discuss."

I trust my physician. From the behavior of his staff to the magazines in the waiting room there is no indication of any ties to politics. But I could be wrong and he is just scrupulously avoiding the appearance of evil.:roflol:

And when the data changed, the recommendation changed. That wasn't a lie.

In order to be protected from someone else you need an N95 mask. You also need eye protection. This has been plastered all over the so-called MSM for three months. How many immunologists have to say it how many times? This is elementary information for anyone making any effort to stay informed.

So they knew they were effective, they just lied about it because they didn't have enough.

There is also a scene where a person coughs and infects several people. What's more likely, a random bird poop in the eye
    or someone coughing on people.

Ya did it. You admitted that the "experts" that everyone should listen to lied.

It's perfectly fair to think the priority should be given to medical personnel, but when you publicly state they don't do much good until right after you have your supplies assured then go ahead and say everyone needs them...well what needs to be said beyond that? You are firmly in the Experts Lie and that is a good thing column.

What did they learn about this virus that have to do with masks? Is the default that masks don't work for non medical personal except for this virus?

Not a die hard rightie, nor am I "just confused."

Think about it this way. When you see a new doctor, you don't know this person from Adam, so how can you trust this person? Trust is slowly built with medical professionals, its not a given. Trust cannot be derived from degrees from the most prestigious universities, nor can it be derived from reviews. It only comes from experience, so we are naturally left in the position of jumping off the cliff and trusting these people to break our fall. Doctors and cops are of the same coin. You have to be suspicious of them until you have reason not to be suspicious of them.

Keyword is what I put in bold. That's all they are supposed to be. Recommendations, not forcing people to comply against their will, go against the very basic guarantees of our Constitution, That's when people begin having problems with the so called experts.

That is the exact opposite of an admission that they lied. They literally told you that the benefits were outweighed by the risk based on the currently available data.

And then the data changed, so the calculus of the benefits and the risk changed. Thus the recommendation changed.

They learned that asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic spread was a much bigger component of the virus' transmission. Masks help with that because it limits the ability of people to spread the virus even though they may never know that they are sick.

I will give you the same answer that I already gave you in the post immediately before this one:

They learned that asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic spread was a much bigger component of the virus' transmission. Masks help with that because it limits the ability of people to spread the virus even though they may never know that they are sick.

And where is that reason for the mask change located at the CDC website? I've never heard that reason given for the CDC turn around on masks.
