    The idea that it can be stopped is straw man. That option was gone a long time ago. The idea is to limit its spread so the health care system can keep up. We also want to delay things as much as possible to allow time for better treatments and a vaccine.

    When you start with a false claim as your premise, it is hard to take anything you say seriously.

    What is the false claim? We were told the lock down was done so hospitals wouldn't be overwhelmed, they aren't and many are laying off staff. Now they're moving the goalposts. We may never get a vaccine, even if we did lockdowns aren't sustainable for 1-2 years.

    The false claim was that someone thought that the virus could just be "stopped" in the first place. Social distancing was never intended to "stop" the disease.

    And herd immunity may be a pipe dream as well. Italy, with it's massive contagion numbers of the disease should be seeing the results of "herd immunity" on the spread of the disease. The jury is still out.

    What is not debatable is that a years long lockdown is not sustainable.

    Very few people have argued for that, so that's a bit of a straw-man attack.

    What is a concern to a number of people is the possibility that reopening too soon will result in a relapse - and any possibility
    that the economy might be shut down twice in one year would be truly disastrous.

    Agreed, there are often no good choices, only trade offs. The interesting thing about Sweden is there was never any lock down, with reasonable distancing measures, and they're doing OK. A number of European nations that did have lock downs have higher per capita death rates. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

    Stringent lockdowns could be traded for near total participation in social distancing and mask wearing. But we have far far far too many selfish, ignorant, and/or stubborn people for that to happen right now.

    Sweden has not recommended let alone required face masks. Masks are designed to stop bacteria, which are 1,000 times larger than a virus. Expecting a mask to stop a virus is like thinking a chain link fence will stop mosquitoes.

    How does the health care system can keep up when no one knows how to cure this disease?
    Actually the false claim is saying that we can cure it in the future. On what basis and why should everyone live according to this claim and not the other ?

    Sneeze and cough droplets which is the carrier of the virus are much bigger than the holes in a face mask. The people in the Far East are showing the benefits of wearing and knowing how to wear a face mask

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

    The death toll per million is far higher in Sweden than here.

    If we had done that our death toll would be THIRTY THOUSAND or more higher...as of now.

    Noone knows what the exact per cent for herd immunity would be. Fauci has put that number at 70%.

    It's interesting that people who want to let the virus do whatever to us keep trying to move that number lower...with no scientific basis

    Sweden launches inquiry into handling of pandemic as death rate becomes highest in the world

    [IMG]

    “Sweden has taken the ignominious title of the country with the world’s highest daily death rate from Covid-19.”

    Well, let’s assume they did right....

    Sweden Covid19 deaths per 1M pop; 4,468
    Stockholm Covid19 deaths per 1M pop/Percentage of deaths; 4,400/98%
    Stockholm population density, Metro/Urban; 13,000 per square mile

    NOTE: U.S. has over 55 Metro/Urban areas/population density of over 13,000 per square mile.

    Sweden may have done it right, however;

    Had Trump opted for Sweden’s strategy;
    Estimated number of Covid19 deaths; Over 1 million

    Republican’s “preferable” Covid19 re-election death toll; Under 100,000

    Conclusion; It is irrational to promote Sweden’s strategy, and whine about CDC’s cause of death guidelines.

    Why are people clinging to this Sweden model? It is hard to compare countries rates as they are so different. For example, France has a very high rate compared to the US, I am inclined to beleive that a large part of that is due to being a very densly populated country with very extensive and highly used public transportation (IIRC the paris metro shuttles more people per day than any other city in the world, despite being a relatively small city)
    Sweden is on track to join the big 4 in Europe. They are currently at 443 deaths per million. The closest coutnries I can think of with which to comare Sweden would be Finland and Norway. Death rate there? 58 and 44 per million.

    While the Swedes are now admitting they make a huge mistake in not shutting down masking and socially isolating

    The Constitution needs to be amended so that healthy people can never be locked down again.

    After all the lecturing you have done over staying inside, wear your face mask, in the event you must go out, keep at least six feet from everyone, surely you will have to agree that after a week of protests where people followed few of your demands, one week from today there should be millions of new cases of the Chinese virus appearing in the US.
